Miguel Cabrera’s renowned painting of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a prominent figure in Mexican history known for her contributions to literature, philosophy, and religious thought during the Spanish colonial period, proves to be a multifaceted piece, riddled with hidden and implicit themes. The subject of the painting, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, was known not only as an incredible scholar, contributing her insights through intellectual debate and poetry, but also as a proto-feminist of her time.
