“When The World Goes Mad” In Simon Winchester’s speech, “When the world goes mad,” he proved himself entertaining, yet knowledgeable and experienced. Mr. Winchester studied geology at Oxford University, but now provides his full attention to journalism. After earning his degree in geology he traveled to Africa where he would then search for copper. Winchester describes to the audience a book he picked up from the British Council Library titled “Coronation Everest.” Coronation Everest was written by James Morris, a London Times contributor whom covered the expedition of Mt. Everest. The plot being James not only climbing the summit of Mt. Everest as an inexperienced climber, yet also how he was able to get the news back to London for printing. Winchester explains how reading this book, particularly, influenced him to become a writer. He was convinced because of this job; he could also travel the world while pursuing journalism. There was a massive earthquake in San Francisco during the year of 1906. The country of United States went through great loss because of this massacre. Nearly 250,000 people had become homeless as the result of this great earthquake. Winchester pointed out the question: How unprepared was America when this disaster hit? He compared the San Francisco earthquake to the Katrina hurricane in 2005. Winchester then explained that many people believed that natural disasters of this level were an act of angry Gods. People soon realized the truth and changed their whole perspective of natural disasters of this degree. He claims this to be the motivation behind his book. Simon Winchester then ended his speech in the same manner that he began it: an amusing joke.
