This way, the author can describe their feelings in a deeper way. So, what are some deep feelings one can find? One that can be seen as straightforward and only means what it says is the poem “Oranges,” by Gary Soto. In the poem, the speaker, Gary Soto, writes about his first girlfriend that he took out. He took her to a store and she picked something that cost more than what he had, so he paid with an orange and his money. His love for her was bright and it was as if he was “making a fire” in his hands. The similes used by the author, Gary Soto, are mainly used for the purpose of giving the audience a visual of what a specific scenery looks like. He expresses how the “fog [was] hanging like old coats between the trees”, giving the audience a visualization of what the fog looked like that day, and when he “turned to the candies tiered like bleachers”, it gives the audience visualization of how the candies were set up. These similes are important to set the scene for the reader so that they can understand the importance of the other phrases used to provide a deeper sense of emotion. Soto also uses personification to give the audience the scene. In the poem he captures “a few cars hissing past”, in order to give the audience an idea of what the cars sounded like when they were driving past. Setting the scene for the audience is very important to helping them understand what it was like physically, which feeds into the emotions that may take
