In the poem, “Facing It”, by Yusef Komunyakaa, the speaker describes his feelings while visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. The speaker’s state of mind transitions chronological throughout the poem from refection of self, reflection of past, and finally through the acceptance of reality. The speaker reflects himself during the first 9 lines of the poem. Knowing before getting there that he didn’t want to cry, he couldn’t hold back the tears. “I’m stone. I’m flesh” (line 5), the speaker thought he was strong enough to see the names of all the people that died during the Vietnam War. However, saying that he is flesh, he shows that he is not cold, but is overwhelmed with emotion and starts crying. He sees that he is not strong
The three narratives “Home Soil” by Irene Zabytko, “Song of Napalm” by Bruce Weigl, and “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen all have the same feelings of war and memory, although not everyone experiences the same war. Zabytko, Weigl, and Owen used shifting beats, dramatic descriptions, and intense, painful images, to convince us that the horror of war far outweighs the devoted awareness of those who fantasize war and the memories that support it.
War is cruel. The Vietnam War, which lasted for 21 years from 1954 to 1975, was a horrific and tragic event in human history. The Second World War was as frightening and tragic even though it lasted for only 6 years from 1939 to 1945 comparing with the longer-lasting war in Vietnam. During both wars, thousands of millions of soldiers and civilians had been killed. Especially during the Second World War, numerous innocent people were sent into concentration camps, or some places as internment camps for no specific reasons told. Some of these people came out sound after the war, but others were never heard of again. After both wars, people that were alive experienced not only the physical damages, but also the psychic trauma by seeing the deaths and injuries of family members, friends or even just strangers. In the short story “A Marker on the Side of the Boat” by Bao Ninh about the Vietnam War, and the documentary film Barbed Wire and Mandolins directed by Nicola Zavaglia with a background of the Second World War, they both explore and convey the trauma of war. However, the short story “A Marker on the Side of the Boat” is more effective in conveying the trauma of war than the film Barbed Wire and Mandolins because of its well-developed plot with well-illustrated details, and its ability to raise emotional responses from its readers.
With time, tragedies become statistics. The lives lost culminate to numbers, percentages, and paragraphs in textbooks,and though a recognition of its occurrence becomes universal, an understanding of its severity dies with those who lived it. “Leningrad Cemetery, Winter of 1941” is a literary medium by which the nature of tragedy is transmitted. Set in the post-battle Leningrad, the poem encapsulates the desolation not of war and its aftermath. Paramount in this translation is figurative language. Olds’ use of simile and metaphor in “Leningrad Cemetery, Winter of 1941” allows the reader to understand the incomprehensible horrors of war and, through contrast, the value of life.
Perspective allows people to see another person’s point of view. In the essay “The Cabdriver’s Daughter” by Waheeda Samady, she addresses her perception versus society’s opinion of her father. In her eyes, her father is a person capable of displaying kindness and expressing his profound knowledge while for some Americans, he is their preconceived notion of what a terrorist might look like. She challenges people to look past his scars and the color of skin, and “look at what the bombs did not destroy” (19). To her, he is the man that has lived through the Soviet-Afghan War, persevered through poverty, and denied these experiences the power of changing him into a cantankerous person. Samady feels prideful of her father’s grit through his past experiences yet feels sorrowful thinking about the life he could have lived if the war had never happened.
The informal language and intimacy of the poem are two techniques the poet uses to convey his message to his audience. He speaks openly and simply, as if he is talking to a close friend. The language is full of slang, two-word sentences, and rambling thoughts; all of which are aspects of conversations between two people who know each other well. The fact that none of the lines ryhme adds to the idea of an ordinary conversation, because most people do not speak in verse. The tone of the poem is rambling and gives the impression that the speaker is thinking and jumping from one thought to the next very quickly. His outside actions of touching the wall and looking at all the names are causing him to react internally. He is remembering the past and is attempting to suppress the emotions that are rising within him.
The second stanza immediately shows symbolism starting with the first few words. Line 10 begins with, “Once the renegade flesh was gone.” The use of the phrase, “renegade flesh” within this poem symbolizes the person who was causing the hurting. Renegade involves synonyms such as: traitor, deserter, and rebel, thus contributing to the meaning behind the phrase. ... is the most important line in the poem. I think the author used personification here to make the image clearer to the reader, and help them make the connection from the line to life. The line gives the idea that the author has had to overcome his own struggles in life, and is describing how it felt in this poem.
Philip Levine’s “Bobby Hefka” develops a deeper message, theme, of American society in the 1940s where people avoid racism and its many other issues. The poem exposes the fact that with society, avoiding its issues, they are not learning from them thus, society isn’t making any progress. Levine pinpoints a main cause to the stagnant society which is the stresses of World War II. His use of a metaphor guides us; the readers, to get a grasp on the size and prevalence of World War II in society, “Beyond him the dark clouds of 1945 / were clustering over Linwood” (33-34). The author is comparing the war to dark clouds and gives 1945 a negative connotation to help highlight that it represents the war. This metaphor provides the text with a meaning and with it we can decipher that society is solely focusing on the war and can’t address other issues, racism.
Ravikovitch uses an analogy for the overall poem. Comparing rocks to people. She uses this analogy to show that a person can be hurt, but never show it, then one day crack and crumble. Just like a rock will sit there for years, and suddenly crack. Within the poem, she uses metaphors, such as, “the rock has an open wound,” comparing the rocks crack to an open wound, showing the similarities between humans and rocks. Ravikovitch uses repetition of the word years in the first part of the poem to emphasize that a rock can go so long appearing to be unharmed, even for years, until they finally get a crack, as well as with people. She also uses personification. Ravikovitch personifies the rock to show the similarity between rocks and people, and how two things that are so different, can be so similar. The overall message that Ravikovitch is trying to convey, is that even though rocks are tough, they still crack, as do people. A person can be hurt but never show it, then all of a sudden crumble. Even the strongest boulders have cracks.
As Carter opens the poem, he tells how at this point in his life, he still has this essential want for things his own father presented him growing up. In the beginning, he expresses he has this “…pain [he] mostly hide[s], / but [that] ties of blood, or seed, endure” (lines 1-2). These lines voice how he longs for his father and just how painful it is without him at his side. In addition, he still feels “the hunger for his outstretched hand” (4) and a man’s embrace to take [him] in” (5). Envision a man that sat on a grimy concrete block, as nightfall began to crystallize before his eyes. His hair, charcoal-grey, was matted and straggly, as if he had ever known the pleasure of a hot shower or comb except when he was in the war. His once shimmering brown eyes were know hollow and cold. His eyes, that were once filled with the upmost blissfulness, now sagged like the bulky bags underneath his eyes, consumed by the loneliness and despair he felt for himself, for his lack of purpose in life. This man did not bare a smile, only crinkles where one used to be. He wore his only faded blue jacket with a tan shirt tucked underneath it. He wore cruddy worn out jeans that barely seized his thin waist and boney legs. His only pair of shoes that were once white, we're now grungy. His finger nails were bitten and dirty. This man, like many other homeless veterans, struggle everyday of their lives.
When civilians look at the men and women in the military, they think of strength, courage, and freedom. When those same men and women get out, civilians should treat them with respect, honor, and dignity. In their own minds however, it may be a different story. A loss of strength, a lack of courage, and a never-ending battle within that keeps them all but free. In the music video “Wrong Side of Heaven”, FFDP successfully argues that homeless veterans and veterans with PTSD need assistance. Through the use of visual aspects, literary devices, and symbolism, FFDP shows that their music video holds a strong argument.
..., the content and form has self-deconstructed, resulting in a meaningless reduction/manifestation of repetition. The primary focus of the poem on the death and memory of a man has been sacrificed, leaving only the skeletal membrane of any sort of focus in the poem. The “Dirge” which initially was meant to reflect on the life of the individual has been completely abstracted. The “Dirge” the reader is left with at the end of the poem is one meant for anyone and no one. Just as the internal contradictions in Kenneth Fearing’s poem have eliminated the substantial significance of each isolated concern, the reader is left without not only a resolution, but any particular tangible meaning at all. The form and content of this poem have quite effectively established a powerful modernist statement, ironically contingent on the absence and not the presence of meaning in life.
War has always been inevitable throughout the history of the world. The outcomes can differ greatly; it’s usually either a win or a loss. Wins or losses are just definite statements, but photos can represent these statements. Alfred Eisenstaedt’s “V-J Day in Times Square” shows an American sailor kissing a young woman right in the middle of Times Square, despite their surroundings. This iconic photo was taken after the U.S. declared victory over Japan in World War II, and was published in Life magazine a week later. John Gap’s (III) photo shows a young girl being consoled at a soldier’s funeral in a local high school gymnasium, later to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. This humble photo was taken during the war still raging in Afghanistan, showing that these types of losses happen quite often, as there are no iconic photos for Afghanistan compared to the photo shot after the win over World War II. Unlike its counterpart, this photo was published only at a local level on a website. Both these photos show a soldier being dismissed to go home from war. Although the two photos share that common factor, the scenario in which the soldier comes home differs greatly. Through these photos, Albert Eisenstaedt and John Gaps III help evoke pathos and give the observer a sense of the pride and the devastation felt of a home coming from war using photographic elements such as framing, focus, and angles.
In the poem What were they like, Denise Levertov uses various language features to protest against America’s participation in the Vietnamese War and to convey that what is lost in war is more than just lives but culture. Levertov uses narrative structure, antithesis and repetition to convey the devastating effects of war. In the poem what were they like, Levertov conveys the consequences of war through the use of antithesis. The antithesis “Sir, their light hearts turned to stone” shows the change in the people of Vietnam. Light refers to the lanterns in the first stanza “lanterns of stone”, lanterns give the image of something that are able to lead you and alongside heart this gives the image of life.
