The child’s development is determined by biological maturation and interaction with the environment. Although all children go through each stage in the same order, there are individual differences in the rate at which children progress through stages, and some may never go through the later steps. Each stage of development reflects an increasing sophistication of children’s thought. The first stage is the Sensorimotor stage. This stage ranges from birth to two years of age and can be broken down to six substages. The main objective of this stage is goal-directed behavior and object permanence. Goal-directed behavior combines several schemes and coordinates them to perform a single act to solve a problem. Object permanence is the realization to form a mental schema of an object that is not present but exists. The Preoperational Stage is the second stage and ranges from age two to seven. During this stage children increase their ability to think symbolically, as well as increase the use of concepts, centration, conservation,and intuitive thought emerge , and thinking remains egocentric. The third stage is the Concrete Operational change. Occurring between ages seven and twelve. A research-based article by Almon, J. and Miller, E. (2011) showed some researches from different parts of the world regarding the Crisis in Early Education. One of those crisis they found out was children were pushed to early learning. They focused on the cognitive accomplishment rather than play-based learning. With all the evidences they have gathered, they found out that when children get inappropriate early education, it has a long-term negative effect.
Now days we can see that young children are very inquisitive about finding the reason behind every occurrence. They are self motivated to learn about the “Hows” and “Whys” of the world. It can be said that the children are almost like scientist as they collect evidences by scrutinizing and experiencing the world. Children are generally involved in the process making hypotheses; they are also engaged in evaluating the statistical data and releasing prior beliefs when they are presented by other stronger evidences. All this they are doing even when they are searching for their toys, arranging blocks in any random manner or playing with toys with their friends. Children also show amazing psychological intuition by watching the actions of other people and can also determine underlying enthusiasm, desires and preferences (Kushnir and Wellman, 2010).
Education (2008) agreed that collaboration and argumentation will help children in building their knowledge as they reformulate the ideas based on their intuition. Wellman (1990) as cited in Edition (2003) mention that “Children begin in the preschool years to develop sophisticated understandings (whether accurate or not) of the phenomena around them”. This understanding is one of the foundations that realize, children are able to integrate new concepts and information then construct new knowledge.
In the story “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” the author Conan Doyle portrays many different narrative techniques. He uses these techniques to provide meaning for the audience as well as help them visualize the situation that was being described. Over the last couple of months I have had the opportunity to student teach at Crim Elementary School. During the few months that I was there, I was placed in a preschool classroom. I was able to learn a lot of different techniques and strategies that I will be able to use in my future classroom. Every student has a different personality so I was excited to get into the classroom and observe how to help each student. For this paper, we were asked to choose three different theories. These theories were used to help us understand every child’s developmental level. The three theories that I chose to do were Piaget’s three stages, temperament, and behaviorism-operant conditioning. In this paper I will be discussing the information I have learned from the article “From Positive Reinforcement to Positive Behaviors”, by Ellen A. Sigler and Shirley Aamidor. The authors stress the importance of positive reinforcement. The belief is that teachers and adults should be rewarding appropriate behaviors and ignoring the inappropriate ones. The authors’ beliefs are expressed by answering the following questions: Why use positive reinforcement?, Are we judging children’s behaviors?, Why do children behave in a certain way?, Do we teach children what to feel?, Does positive reinforcement really work?, and How does positive reinforcement work?. The following work is a summary of "Positive Reinforcement to Positive Behaviors" with my thoughts and reflection of the work in the end.
Children have a natural inclination to play, alongside a natural instinct to learn and to be curious and inventive, which are characteristics of the human race in general. This quote taken from Janet Moyles is a good starting point for this essay. It is well known that children love to play. If a child were to be left to his/her own devices they would happily play and create new worlds anywhere they were left. It has been well documented and researched that children learn excellently through play. However they are not always given the opportunity to do so, instead being told to, ‘finish your work and then you can go play’. Obviously this is not always the case, but the fact that it is a common practice shows that we do not all fully appreciate the importance of play to children’s learning. This essay will attempt to show how children learn through play, making reference to current theory and practice. I will also give examples from my own first-hand experience of how children learn and develop as people through play.
