According to Fossum (2002), there were five primary leading personalities in labor relations. Terence Poderly and Uriah Stephens were the main leaders and personalities of the KOL. They focused mainly on long term goals and were partial to arbitration over strikes. These idealistic views caused them and the KOL to be not as popular and therefore lacked members and growth. Another similar personality was that of William Sylvis, leader of the NLU in 1866 (Fossum, 2002). The NLU and its leader Sylvis were also not very effective like the KOL due to fact that his goals were primarily political and reformist (Fossum, 2002). Samuel Gompers was the first president of the AFL after its creation in 1886 and lead for 39 years (The Library of
Congress, 2014). He was mainly focused on obtaining quantitative goals and seeking out immediate results and preferred a pragmatic approach with bargaining over winning qualitative goals or pursuing a legislative tactic. One of the final personalities in labor relations was known as “Big Bill” Haywood. He was known for helping to organizing the Western Federation of Miners (WFM). Haywood and several other socialists were also recognized for joining their unions to create the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Compared to the KOL, the NLU, and the AFL the IWW was seemingly radical with its main goal set in eliminating the wage system. Unfortunately, this goal did not set well with employers who fought them rigorously and so, in turn, feasible union could not be created. The IWW’s also created turbulence for its self during World War I when its leaders demanded that their union members would not be taking part or supporting either side, stating that only the capitalist would profit, this stance had a huge impact on the IWW’s popularity and membership (Fossum, 2002).
In 1921 Lewis was denied the presidency of the American Federation of Labor when Samuel Gompers was elected over him. During the following year, he would disagree with labor activist, Jones, over whether or not to set a date for the Kansas coal workers to strike against the “Industrial Slave Law”, which was intended to stop coal labors from striking. There are times when a person must go against what is common or what others want them to do. I would define this a form resistance. To me resistance is going against what is common, or standing up to someone or some thing that you normally would not. This is a common occurrence in the workplace. Resistance in the workplace is nessicary at times to prevent getting stepped on while climbing the corporate latter. Granted there are also times when the best thing to do is sit back and let things happen. There are however times when an employee must make some noise to be heard and noticed. When someone sees oneself about to be passed up for a promotion that they are entitled to, he or she must do something. Another time some form of resistance should be shown would be in the case of a supervisor or manager on a "power-trip". A person should not just let a manager create work or assign jobs that do nothing more than waste valuable manpower because it makes them feel important. My last example of resistance in the workplace is competition between departments that hinders the progress of the other department. Ideally none of this would happen but in today's society ware everyone is out for himself or herself sometimes someone has to shake things up a bit.
Personality Theories The Big Five Approach plays a major role in the process of understanding and analyzing a child’s outcome, as well as any adjustment issues that may occur during a child’s development. Along with these accomplishments, the Big Five approach has proven to be able to cover children, adolescents, and adults under one spectrum (Van den Akker et al., 2013). In the study of psychology there are four major theories of personality. They are Social Cognitive, Psychoanalytic, Humanistic, and Behavioral. Of course, they are all different and portray different types of behavioral patterns. Personality studies have been founded on the perception that all people are alike in some ways, but can be different in other ways. I have placed the four personality theories where I think they belong on the nature versus nurture continuum.
The Principle of Separate Corporate Personality The principle of separate corporate personality has been firmly established in the common law since the decision in the case of Salomon v Salomon & Co Ltd[1], whereby a corporation has a separate legal personality, rights and obligations totally distinct from those of its shareholders. Throughout the course of this assignment I will begin by explaining the concept of legal personality and describe the veil of incorporation. I will give examples of when the veil of incorporation can be lifted by the courts and statuary provisions such as s.24 CA 1985 and incorporate the varying views of judges as to when the veil can be lifted.
I have been reading a lot about the Big Five Model of personality traits. It is a popular outlook on the 5 main traits human beings possess. These Traits are: Extroversion, Neuroticism, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and openness. This is a long standing debate of whether who we are and how we act is a result of inner personalities are because of “genes” and “nature” or a result of situations and events in life or “nurture”.
