Love. Murder. Suicide. All of the things that can make up a good novel or play. There is this concept that love is pain which probably stems from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona with an unset time period but more likely to have been before the 1500s. Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet are two teenagers who meet and fall in love, regardless of the fact that their parents have a rivalry that no one seems to know the reason for anymore. In the end, which was told in the prologue (Shakespeare, 13), Romeo and Juliet kill themselves. When people die, some look to place the blame on who's responsible for one’s death. The people who are most responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s death are Romeo himself, the Capulets, …show more content…
Romeo Montague from the beginning is known to be a sixteen year old who easily falls into depressive and suicidal states when anything in his life begins to go wrong regardless of the fact that his family are very high in status in Verona. (13) Besides the fact that Romeo did kill himself and that is the easiest way to say that he is to blame, he is for other things as well. When first introduced in the play we see him upset because Rosaline cannot reciprocate his feelings towards her. (23) Then he attends the Capulet’s ball to see Rosaline, where he meets Juliet. Romeo compares her to a white dove surrounded by crows. (40) Romeo shows time and time again that he is not mentally nor emotionally stable to be in a relationship and that ultimately leads to his and Juliet’s …show more content…
For some reason, his idea was to trust a 13 year old with a “potion” and then trust that within 42 hours, Romeo wouldn’t hear the news that his wife was dead and that the Friar’s letters would get to him in time. (111) Juliet even considers if Friar Laurence has evil intents with giving her this potion, which who wouldn’t? She quickly dismisses these thoughts because he has consistently been shown to be true to his word. (116) What if he did intend to kill her though? Verona is in Italy, and Italy is a mostly Catholic country. The Catholic Church will only validate a new marriage if the previous couple gets an annulment or if the previous spouse is dead. When Romeo murdered Tybalt, he was banished rather than slain like the Capulets wanted. (82) The risk of news coming out that Friar Laurence had married Romeo and Juliet before marrying Juliet to Paris, surely that wouldn’t have been well for him being a priest. Romeo has been banished, and if he comes to Verona he will be killed (82), the only person who would admit that he married Juliet to Romeo is Juliet. This may seem farfetched, but what if his plan were to kill Juliet once she woke in the tomb? Once Friar Laurence learns that Romeo doesn’t know of their plans, he says that he will keep her in his cell till Romeo does come. (129) While this may
Friar Laurence marries Romeo and Juliet which tends to be a bad decision. He agrees to marry Romeo and Juliet and then keep their marriage a secret. He thinks that when Capulets and Montagues will discover their marriage, they will stop fighting and turn their rancor into friendship. So he told Romeo, "But come, young waverer, come go with me./ In one respect I'll thy assistant be;/ For this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households' rancour to pure love." (2.3.92-95). If he would not have married them, Juliet would not have been Romeo's wife and she could have happily married Paris. But now, she was Romeo's wife and she did not want to marry any other man, so she decided to kill herself rather than marry Paris.
One of the main reasons that Friar Laurence was held accountable for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet is because he married them. First of all, this marriage was done without the consent of the parents. Secondly, he could have tried to support their relationship instead of marrying them and not telling anyone. He speaks of how these two will become one in marriage; “For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone /
Friar Laurence's immature actions make him part of the tragedy. For one, he married Romeo and Juliet. When told that Romeo loves Juliet, Friar replies, "Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here! /Is Rosaline, that thou didst love so dear, /so soon forsaken? Young men's love then lies/ not truly in the hearts, but in their eyes," (II, III, lines 66-69). In these lines, Friar admits that Romeo is only lusting for Juliet. Being the adult, Friar shouldn't have married Romeo until he found true love. However, the Friar was immature and married them anyways. Then, Friar came up with the idea for Juliet to fake death. Juliet is distressed about Romeo being banished so Friar comes up with the plan saying, "Hold, then. Go home, be merry, give consent/ to marry Paris. Wednesday is tomorrow,” Juliet is then suppose to "Take thou this vial, being then in bed/ And this distilling liquor drink thou off." After being buried and awakened, "Shall Romeo bear thee hence to Mantua." (IV, I, Lines 90-119). This bad advise, to give a girl a drink like death and tells her to run away, is only one of many immature actions Friar takes. Finally, Friar did not stay with Juliet after she frantically woke up, in a tomb, next other diseased husband who was supposed to run away with her to Mantua. Inste...
In William Shakespeare's “Romeo And Juliet” Romeo is the main character. He is Montague's son. Which means he is the son of his loves enemy, the Capulets. Romeo is very depressed, he is very negative, impulsive, anxious, emotional, and he is a rebel. Romeo is stupid if he would have taken it slow and not rushed things with Juliet they might still be alive. Due to Romeo and Juliet's mad love for eachother, and their families hatred towards each other they died.
Inevitable Death in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet In Romeo and Juliet it is clear that fate plays a large part. There are many references in the play that refer to bad luck or misfortune, but it is argued that the deaths of Romeo and Juliet are equally the fault of human error. The characters each have weaknesses that could be to blame like anger, ambition or ill judgement. Also some characters had premonitions or bad feelings that something bad would happen but they never did anything to stop this.
The Deaths of Romeo and Juliet Was it just one person’s fault, or a mixture? In this essay, I will include many different reasons as to why Romeo and Juliet die. I will explain in detail each point and put forward my own opinions. I will use quotes to back up each point and explain why the historical context is relevant.
He tried to please everyone so nobody would point a finger towards him. He gave Juliet the potion even when he knew it could kill her, either way he would be safe. If Juliet died there would be no sign that is was his fault… nobody would find out about how he secretly married Romeo and Juliet. Also, if the plan worked Juliet and Romeo would be happy and thankful for the Friar. He let Juliet take the potion even when he knew the risk, “Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, Then is it likely thou wilt undertake A thing like death to chide away this shame, That cop’st with death himself to scape from it; And, if thou darest, I’ll give thee remedy,” (Shakespeare 452). He was only ever out for himself in the
Although the lovers are both fairly impudent throughout the play, Romeo, the male lead, is even more so. Through out the play of Romeo and Juliet, the Montague heir has ceased maturity over the course of the Shakespearean tragedy. First of all, it was “Rosaline” (II.iii.67). whom Romeo “didst love so dear” (II.iii.67). at the beginning of the play as he “groaned . . . woes for Rosaline” (II.ii.74-78) however, he easily fell out of lover with her and in love with the “fair daughter of the rich Capulet” (II.iii.58) like he was changing his mind on a meal he’d order. Also, he fell out of love with Rosaline because she did not “doth grace for grace and love for love allow.” (II.iii. 85-88) which basically meant that Romeo didn’t love Rosaline because she didn’t love him back, which is very childish in hindsight. Another way that Romeo is immature is that he doesn’t have a sense of reality fore, he’s always either extremely depressed, like when Rosaline wanted to remain chaised for life or extremely elated like when he met Juliet, while having no real middle ground for his emotions. These are all reasons why Romeo is immature: he’s always heads over heels in love for trivial reasons and he has no to little sense of reality.
Simon Virk Ms. Tsang ENG201-08 02/17/16 Unnecessary Suicide The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, published in 1597 by William Shakespeare, is a suspenseful and romantic story about two lovers whose love cannot part them from their feuding families. Although they were responsible for killing themselves, there are certain individuals who influenced them to commit suicide. Those who are most responsible for the unfortunate deaths of Romeo and Juliet include Friar Lawrence, for his selfish desire to be a hero, Capulet, for imposing an ultimatum and his disconnection from his daughter, and the Nurse, for her irresponsibility and betrayal to Juliet. Friar Lawrence’s unwise and poorly crafted plans led to the lover’s death.
Every decision you make leads to a consequence. The following consequences can be positive or negative, but imagine making three decisions in a few days that ultimately lead to your decision to commit suicide because of your love for a person that you have just met a few days ago. In Shakespeare’s famous story of Romeo and Juliet, he tells the tale of a young woman and man who, despite a family feud, fall in love. (1.5) They keep their relationship secret for fear of what their parents will do, and later on, make an extreme decision when Juliet chooses to fake her death. (4.1) This eventually leads to a miscommunication, and both characters end up committing suicide because of that simple mistake. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet was caused
To many teens, suicide may be the idea of escaping from their reality. They gain this overwhelming sense that if they are dead, everything will be better. But will it really? Teenage suicide has become more and more of an increasing contention in recent times. Even more so since the times of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has the suicide epidemic evolved. What started as a every so often thing you would see on the news has turned into something you hear about more often than you should. Suicide has become a common way of escape and dealing with problems for teenagers, along with many other groups of people. As for in Romeo and Juliet, this is exactly what happens. Romeo and Juliet both use suicide as their way of coping and escaping from what
Did Romeo’s immaturity lead him to commit suicide?Suicide is a serious matter people take their lives because they have been dealing with things in their life for a long time and feel like nothing will ever get better. Romeo being immature committed suicide because he couldn’t bare the thought of not being with Juliet. On average there is about 125 suicides in the US alone everyday. Worldwide over one million people commit suicide. On average that’s about one person every 40 seconds. England immensely reduced there suicide rate by changing there aspirin pills into blister packs instead of bottles because the time it takes someone to open the pills in the blister pack it gives them enough time to think about the decision they are about
They themselves, are the reason and the cause of their death. I do not believe someone else was responsible for this. In the court of law, they should declare it was suicide by choice. Because that is what suicide is, it is a choice. A choice that is made by yourself and no one else. They killed themselves, for reasons of “love”.
In Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet, many of the character’s actions affect the suicides of Romeo and Juliet. However, no one can fully be responsible for one’s suicide except that person. In that case, Romeo is responsible for the death of himself and he very much affects Juliet’s death because he kills himself first. Also Romeo is impulsive, “lovestruck” and very immature. Romeo’s actions are performed without thought. Once he finds out Juliet is dead, he immediately decides to kill himself. If Romeo had gone to Friar Laurence to find out more about Juliet’s death or if he had fully thought his actions over, Juliet would have been awake before he kills himself. Romeo is also in love with Rosaline hours before he falls in love with Juliet.
William Shakespeare treats death in Romeo and Juliet different for each set of characters. Some character deaths was because a familial issue, other were for legal issues. Romeo and Juliet's death was a familial issue, Mercutio’s death was a personal issue and Tybalt's death was a legal issue.
