Did Romeo’s immaturity lead him to commit suicide?Suicide is a serious matter people take their lives because they have been dealing with things in their life for a long time and feel like nothing will ever get better. Romeo being immature committed suicide because he couldn’t bare the thought of not being with Juliet. On average there is about 125 suicides in the US alone everyday. Worldwide over one million people commit suicide. On average that’s about one person every 40 seconds. England immensely reduced there suicide rate by changing there aspirin pills into blister packs instead of bottles because the time it takes someone to open the pills in the blister pack it gives them enough time to think about the decision they are about
He continually uses suicide to show how the teens think. In this case, he shows how distrust can lead to suicidal thoughts. When Juliet feels the nurse, the person she has always gone to, is going against her, she says, “If all else fail, myself have the power to die” (3.5.242) Juliet is overreacting about everything. There are multiple ways to solve this. One of which is just for her to leave and go to Mantua with Romeo. But sometimes it's better to overreact than run away from a problem. But then again, by committing suicide it's just escaping a situation
Romeo fights and kills Tybalt just because Tybalt slays Mercutio, despite knowing the consequence of fighting -death- he still takes it upon himself as a way to seek repentance for Mercutio’s death. He is able to restrain himself before the death of Mercutio but after his death Romeo falls to his impulsiveness and fights Tybalt. After killing Tybalt and getting banishment instead of a death sentence, Romeo refuses to look on the bright side and goes to Friar Lawrence where he says “Ha, banishment! Be merciful, say ‘death’.” (Act 3, Scene 3 line 12), this shows that he deems life without Juliet life not worth living. He then continues weep then decides to take his own life, the Friar stopped him but had Romeo stopped being so quick to make decisions he would have realised banishment is much better than death and would be rejoicing instead of weeping. Romeo hears about Juliet's “death” from his servant Balthasar he instantly decides to kill himself, he doesn't mourn his loss or even cry, he simply buys poison, rides to Verona and kills himself. Had he spoken to anyone and taken any advice he would realize that suicide is not the answer but he had his mind made in a minute, he wanted to be dead with his wife. Romeo impulsiveness to make decisions is a very important characteristic for him to have and for the rest of the
Romeo made the wrong choice by killing himself, although it may have seemed like the perfect thing to do at that time. He should have not been so hasty in his choices.
Romeo drank a vile of poison because he heard the news that Juliet had died, but in reality she was asleep awaiting for his rescue. Juliet awakes to the horrifying sight of Romeo’s lifeless corpse where she commits suicide in the fashion of stabbing herself with Romeo’s dragger. Though both Romeo and Juliet seem to progress through the Five Stages of Grief in an instant. In the case of Romeo, he initially denies the news of Juliet’s “death” and then retorts to searching for a means he should use to kill himself. Romeo experienced the first stage of denial and skips all the stages until acceptance where he acknowledged the terms of the situation and believed that suicide is the best method in order to be with Juliet forever. “Romeo felt cold, even in that terrible heat … ‘It can’t be!’ said Romeo at last … Romeo had made up his mind. He would sleep with Juliet that night. The only question was what means should he use to kill himself? He felt nothing- his only though was to get Juliet and be with her forever” (Shakespeare 94). On the other hand, based on the inferences from the text, Juliet doesn’t seem to experience the Five Stages of Grief at all and appears as if she has given up hope and decide to die to live by
How far would you go to be with the love of your life? Would you kill someone, or run away from the love of your life? Romeo did exactly that, he holds all qualities of tragic hero.romeo us fear, too early: for my mind misgives Some consequence yet hanging in the stars Shall bitterly begin his fearful date With this night's revels and expire the term Of a despised life closed in my breast By some vile forfeit of untimely death.(Shakespeare)this quote shows that romeo is the tragic hero because of his traits of loving easily and believing in fate, and he is very impulsive. Romeo was so drunk on love he didn't think about anything else and did stupid things which caused him much pain. Also, he got over his first love Rosaline very quickly when meeting Juliet which also set up his death because they were never meant to be. Juliet foreshadows his death by saying "an ill-diving soul,"(act 3 scene 5 shakespeare) she means that she feels something bad is going to happen to romeo. This foreshadows how she will see romeo for the last time.this is evidence to show how shakespeare uses tragic flaws to show that romeo is a true tragic hero who is responsible for his own demise.
Romeo is a classic tragic hero. He's either perfect and made a mistake, ideal except for one little problem that messes him up completely, or fate is a fickle mistress who just really doesn't like him. The play, the Zeffirelli version, and the Luhrman version all have different ideas about what exactly made him and Juliet die. The original text leans more toward the latter idea, while the Zeffirelli and Luhrman versions showed hamartia and tragic flaw respectively. In all actuality, to see what causes Romeo's downfall, it's all in how you interpret Shakespeare's words. Personal experiences and thought processes will lead to different ideas. Look at Zeffirelli and Luhrman; two directors using the same text as the inspiration, and they pulled away from it understanding it in entirely different ways.
Romeo’s problems arose when he got banished for avenging Mercuito by murdering Tybalt. His decision to murder Tybalt was not entirely thought through. In fact, after Romeo kills the Capulet, he exclaims that he is ‘fortune’s fool’ (73) line 132. Additionally, his banishment certainly contributed to his death because it kept him away from Verona and Juliet. If he hadn’t gotten banished, he would have been aware of the plan the Friar and Juliet had created. Unfortunately, Romeo wasn’t informed of the plan, and after he heard about Juliet’s death, he sincerely believed she died. Balthasar, who told Romeo of Juliet’s ‘death’, didn’t want to leave Romeo unaccompanied because he believed that he looked ‘…pale and wild and do import Some misadventure…’(116) lines 28-29. Balthasar’s suspicions were valid because Romeo decided to take his life. He did not stop to ask how she died, or what Friar Laurence has to say about her death. Romeo decided, in the spur of the moment, that his only solution to deal with Juliet’s death was to kill himself. Romeo’s impulsiveness caused his preventable death, but he is not the only one who was impulsive and hasty in the
Although the lovers are both fairly impudent throughout the play, Romeo, the male lead, is even more so. Through out the play of Romeo and Juliet, the Montague heir has ceased maturity over the course of the Shakespearean tragedy. First of all, it was “Rosaline” (II.iii.67). whom Romeo “didst love so dear” (II.iii.67). at the beginning of the play as he “groaned . . . woes for Rosaline” (II.ii.74-78) however, he easily fell out of lover with her and in love with the “fair daughter of the rich Capulet” (II.iii.58) like he was changing his mind on a meal he’d order. Also, he fell out of love with Rosaline because she did not “doth grace for grace and love for love allow.” (II.iii. 85-88) which basically meant that Romeo didn’t love Rosaline because she didn’t love him back, which is very childish in hindsight. Another way that Romeo is immature is that he doesn’t have a sense of reality fore, he’s always either extremely depressed, like when Rosaline wanted to remain chaised for life or extremely elated like when he met Juliet, while having no real middle ground for his emotions. These are all reasons why Romeo is immature: he’s always heads over heels in love for trivial reasons and he has no to little sense of reality.
In “Romeo and Juliet by: William Shakespeare” we know that they commit suicide in the end for love and we probably don’t think about it much, but in real life things like that happen. Many teens commit suicide by medicine or drugs which is shown when Romeo thinks Juliet’s dead and drinks the poison. One issue that is proven in “Romeo and Juliet by: William Shakespeare” is that alot of teens today face certain things like depression which cause Teen Suicide.
Simon Virk Ms. Tsang ENG201-08 02/17/16 Unnecessary Suicide The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, published in 1597 by William Shakespeare, is a suspenseful and romantic story about two lovers whose love cannot part them from their feuding families. Although they were responsible for killing themselves, there are certain individuals who influenced them to commit suicide. Those who are most responsible for the unfortunate deaths of Romeo and Juliet include Friar Lawrence, for his selfish desire to be a hero, Capulet, for imposing an ultimatum and his disconnection from his daughter, and the Nurse, for her irresponsibility and betrayal to Juliet. Friar Lawrence’s unwise and poorly crafted plans led to the lover’s death.
Romeo and Juliet’s young love reflects their abruptness, rashness, and lack of maturity which leads to them getting suicide impulses throughout the story and causing Romeo and Juliet to ultimately suicide at the end of the story. Their love causes them to act very rashly and make unwise decisions, such as getting married and killing themselves. They are also too young to love because they are not mature enough. Their lack of maturity influences their decisions, leading to them finding abrupt solutions, such as suicide. After Balthasar told Romeo that Juliet died, he proclaimed, “I do beseech you, sir, have patience/Your looks are pale and wild do import/ Some misadventure” (5.1.27-29). Once Balthasar delivers the tragic news of Juliet’s death to Romeo, Romeo makes a rash decision of going back to Verona, not thinking about the consequences of his act, which would lead to more complications, such as him being...
Throughout the play we see a lack of maturity in Romeo as he makes quick decisions without thinking them through and the reader realizes how fast Romeo can be in and out of love. In the beginning of the play Romeo is shown, as he’s heartbroken over Rosaline a couple hours after the reader sees him love-struck over Juliet and talks the same way about Juliet as he did about Rosaline hours ago. The reader will learn he falls in love easily. Romeo stated the following after seeing Juliet “ Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight. For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night”(Shakespeare 1.5.59-60). This vividly shows how fast Romeo can fall in love, which shows immaturity. This also shows that he’s very shallow because for him love is based on physical beauty as he only saw Juliet for the first time. Another example of Romeo’s immaturity includes when the prince was merciful and banished Romeo from Verona for killing Tybalt and Romeo whished the prince had sentenced death for him. Also it shows that Romeo did not ...
Who is responsible for killing Romeo and Juliet? The death of these two people was a tragedy, but might not have been entirely their fault. There are many people in this drama that could be to blame for this terrible misunderstanding. Romeo and Juliet’s stars were crossed from the beginning so it may very well be the very stars fault for being crossed. In my opinion though, the father of Juliet might have done a few things to drive his daughter and his son-in-law to their untimely deaths.
Romeo’s final act of suicide is not completely based on the death of Juliet. The depression he exhibits at the onset of the play is already exhibiting his desire to escape life. Works Cited Becker, Ernest. A. A. The Denial of Death.
The average person doesn’t meet someone, profess their love for them, and ask her hand in marriage all in one night… but Romeo does. In Shakespeare’s calamity of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is the idiot that does all of this. I blame Romeo for the death of these star-crossed lovers, along with the other four characters. If it wasn’t for his impetuous nature, none of this would have happened. Romeo’s relationship with Juliet could be more thought out and more planned. Although the play ended with his death included, without him Juliet and others would have kept their lives.
