1. Sugar is a toxic poison and it has become the main problem in modern diets that is leading to Metabolic Diseases. One of the major concerns about this topic is that Dr. Robert Lusting who is featured in this documentary and is an American pediatric endocrinologist is seeing children develop diabetes. The concern is not only with children but with the population as a whole. Metabolic diseases have been on the rise and part of it because people are consuming way more sugar than is recommended. It was stated that on average Americans are consuming 19 tsp of sugar a day and some teenagers are consuming 30-41 tsp a day. Another concern is that 74% of processed package food has had sugar added to it and the industry has become very cleaver …show more content…
The Sugar Industry has an invested interest in the research and information about Sugar so it doesn’t get out, they want to keep the guidelines unclear. The other main point in this Documentary is the fact that the sugar industry is trying to keep sugar guidelines unclear. Why? Because sugar is a very popular item in our diets not only is it popular it is very profitable and that is what they are mainly interested in, the profit. The issue with this is that the Sugar Industries have the power and money to influence different systems. If a health professional came out with research saying that sugar was a cause of heat attacks the sugar industry would pay someone to conduct another research to counter the original research. The sugar industry would counter anything thing and everything that was put out against sugar. Fredrick J. Stare is just one out of many that the sugar industry paid to become a spokesman for their benefit, he would spread the message that …show more content…
"Fact Check" one major fact presented in this film
Added sugar is hidden in 74% of packaged food Discuss: After researching the fact, what are your findings.
We generally think the sugar that we intake is from the general known sugary foods that are on the market, like cakes, cookies, candy bars, ice cream…ect but sugar can also be found in most items that you would keep in your pantry like bread, pasta sauce, energy bars, yogurt. These are foods that are often promoted as healthy and good for. The facts are accurate, manufacturers are putting 74% of sugars in these products. So if you thought you were making a healthy choice you could be eating a deserts worth of sugar in your main meal of the day. Food labels don’t have the recommend amount of sugars you should have in a day so it is sometimes a challenge to make good choices about what to buy. The recommendation per day for women is 6tsp (25g) and for men 9tsp (38g). Those foods that say they are healthy sometimes contain up to 7tsp (29g) of sugar in this case, your leading yogurt brand. The FDA is looking into ways to make labels clearer so that people can make a better choice but nothing has happened
Glucose is a sugar that plays a big part in a human’s health and well-being. This sugar is a major source of energy for the body’s brain and cells. The Cells that receive energy from glucose help in the building of the body’s muscle and tissue. Although glucose may be important to the body too much of this sugar can cause a chronic condition called Diabetes. Diabetes, also known as Diabetes mellitus, is a chronic condition that is caused by too much sugar in the blood. This condition can affect all age groups. In fact, in 2010 a survey was taken by the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, on the number of newly diagnosed diabetes. Out of 1,907,000 people: 24.38% were ages 20-44, 55.17% were ages 45-64, and 20.45% were ages 65 and greater. Diabetes is a very serious condition, and it can be deadly if left untreated. This paper will help better educate the reader on the signs and symptoms, the testing process, and the management of diabetes.
Jon Gabriel explains how sugar has become an addictive drug like nicotine, the only difference is that its legal. Once we become hooked on it we become habituated to its effects and need more and more to satisfy ourselves. As a result of the increase in marketing and the on going dependence on sugary foods and beverages, children are taking in more and more sugar and obtaining less and less nutrients. According to Gentry Lasater,
One in every two of American minorities born after 2000 will contract early onset of diabetes. The price of medicine to treat diabetes is very expensive, especially for those who are uninsured or with little or poor insurance coverage. In many low income families and families of minorities the expenses of medicine take away from income. These families are then unable to buy healthy foods. Cheap food means it is also unhealthier, take a look at fast food restaurants that offer dollar menu items. You can easily buy a burger for a dollar or a large soda full of high fructose corn syrup for only a dollar. Water is more expensive than soda or sugary drinks in many instances. Diabetes is caused by eating foods that are unhealthy and requires daily medication to control. These medications can be very expensive causing families to continue their unhealthy eating habits because it is the only thing they can afford to eat so a cycle is created and passed on to the younger generations. Food companies have place a veil between us and the food we consume, even things that appear to be a healthy choice, in many cases is not. We consume food that is injected with fillers like pink slime, foods that contain high fructose corn syrup, and are genetically modified. It is no wonder why America has seen a rise in childhood obesity and the early onset of diabetes. The pictures in the store that depict pretty
Sugar. This documentary takes a look at how our school’s lunch programs and government play a role in the spread of obesity across the nation. The film really attempts to drive home
Fructose is having a negative impact on the modern diet, but a broader lesson than “fructose is the problem” will lead to better results. Looking back to America before Nixon signed the farm bill provides guidance.
Pollan’s "In Defense of Food" was effective in presenting its argument. The documentary included many persuasive strategies that appealed to the reader and evoked reconsideration of food. Pollan approaches the argument with shocking imagery, evidence, and an overall presentation that provided a stark contrast between what is realistically healthy and what American society calls “food.” As the viewer I felt impressed and persuaded.
Americans eat entirely too much. And the foods we are consuming are not at all healthy, they contain excessive amounts of salt, sugar, saturated fat, carbohydrates, etc. This over eating is not only a severe problem in the adult population but also in America’s children as well. Results from a study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that 1 to 2 year olds get 30 percent more of the 950 calories they require a day. It has also been found that another contributing factor to most children’s bad eating habits is the fact that they either rarely or never consume vegetables and fruit. Besides the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables children are consuming large amounts of sugar. Wether it be in candy or desserts, soda or sugary fruit juices children are beginning to consume these at very early ages. Results from another study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that infants are drinking soda out of baby bottles as early as 7 months of age. In response to these disturbing facts Parents magazine published the preceding article. It outlines 10 steps that can be taken to
You can find sugar in most foods. Everything from salad dressing to canned soup. Even the bread we eat has a high concentration of sugar. All of the sugar that America is intakes is starting to add up. Today two out of three adults and one out of three children in the United States are overweight. These illnesses would be far less prevalent if we dialed back our consumption of sugar. Not to say that sugar is the main reason for diabetes, but it is definitely a determining factor. Eating too much of
According to the article, Too Much Can Make Us Sick (http://www.sugarscience.org/too-much-can-make-us-sick/), “Heart disease. Diabetes. These chronic conditions are among the leading causes of death worldwide. Increasingly, scientists are focusing on a common set of underlying metabolic issues that raise people's risk for chronic disease. It turns out that the long-term overconsumption of added sugars is linked to many of these dysfunctions.” This means that people living today, have a lot more trouble with diseases because of our unhealthy sugar intake compared to the
“Sugar addiction is a rapidly growing epidemic (Teitelbaum, 2010).” According to researchers, on average an individual consumes one-hundred pounds of sugar each year. Americans spend billions of dollars a year on gym memberships, healthy foods and beverages, and exercise equipment. Despite the economic strain, Americans continue to make room in their budgets for weight loss products.
Since 1916, the United States Department of Agriculture (the government agency responsible for all U.S. policy regarding agriculture, food, and farming) has revised their recommendations several times. Unfortunately, money talks and the USDA’s recommendations are based on outdated science and are influenced by people with business interest. Even so, its recommendations are considered almost “holy” by physicians, nutritionists, and dieters, but in reality, they are the root cause of the problem. A single visit to our local public school cafeteria and it will become clear that they do not have the best interests of the children at heart. What they are feeding our innocent children is preposterous. Doctors, the people we trust and expect to be “the experts”, do not know much about the subject of nutrition. A vast majority of medical schools in the U.S. require just 25-30 hours or less of nutrition training, and some do not require at all. So doctors must rely on the ...
Probably some of the most pleasurable and enjoyable memories of a person has to do with sweets. When thinking back to birthdays, there is always the memory of the wonderful cake that mother beautifully made and decorated with frosting and glazes. A good wedding is never complete without the cutting of the splendid multi-level wedding cake, when the happy new couple gets to playfully shove and smear cake and white frosting into each other’s smiling faces. When a person gains weight, they think the main cause is the fat that is included in the food they eat. They are terribly mistaken. According to the video Hungry for Change, they say, “ In the 1900’s, an average person only consumed about 15g of sugar a day. But in the present, modern adults consumes 70-80g of sugar a day, and teens consumes about 120-150g”. Sugar is not only a unhealthy diet and obesity, but it is the main cause of overweight. Sugar does not contain fat, but when people eat more calories than they burn, the remaining calories stays as fat. By being overweight, it can impact a person’s entire quality of life. In the physical health, the right kind of food gives you the strength and energy to make it through in your everyday lifestyle. In other words, by eating the wrong kind of foods, you won't get the energy you need in your life. In the mental/emotional health, a little stress is good for your body because it gives ...

In a society where food comes in abundance, people are overeating. Compared to the beginning of the twenty first century when only about five percent of the population had diabetes (Nazarko, 2009), today that number is rising and continuing to do so. This is starting to affect the health of children diagnosed with diabetes at a young age. When a child has diabetes, it becomes very serious since children are at such a young age to deal, process, and handle the responsibilities that come with this disease.... ...
