In the book “Gang Leader for A Day”, Sudhir Venkatesh, a sociologist in graduate school at the University of Chicago, did research in the projects with young men affiliated with gangs. The way he did it was so different because he actually presented himself in some of the most ghetto and dangerous projects. Sudhir Venkatesh first interacted with a gang when he went to a poor community asking questions. Venkatesh assignment was to get some information through gang members by asking them straight up questions, which they took offensive. Not only that, from inferring what is stated, it seemed like he was also smart because he liked reading about history and politics. J.T had a job after college selling office supplies and industrial textiles in downtown Chicago. Keeping in mind of the time frame, 1980s, there was so much racism going on the United Sates. J.T felt discouraged because he would see white people with lesser skills get promoted ahead of him. From then J.T knew his chances of becoming successful were limited. After two years of working and going to college, he left the job and college to go back to his community in which became the leader of the gang. Venkatesh and J.T began the day at 7:30 in a restaurant to discuss everything that needed to be done that day. Before they even started talking about anything, Venkatesh made it clear that he wasn’t killing anyone and/or selling anything. J.T explained to him that couldn’t do everything because then he’ll get in trouble by the gang members who were ahead of him. J.T had two senior officers that helped him throughout the day. The first assignment of the day was to clean up the mess from a previous party, and Venkatesh had to make the decision of which group to send to clean it up. The second assignment was to find a place to hold meetings. As Venkatesh didn’t know anything of the prices and times, he wanted to give only 50 bucks until J.T and the other two officers explained to him that he needed to increase the donation. At the same time, the problem came up with a store manager over paying the gang members to buy things. Venkatesh’s next duty was to solve a misunderstanding between two gang members. The next assignment was about he was selling diluted product, in which got J.T got demoted in Black

This tied in with officer morale in a big way. The book illustrates that when departments put out arrest quotas for the east side arrests fell, usually to the minimum. Mosko is often very critical of upper police managements distance and ignorance to the actual problems out there.

The idea of being black and poor is not a simple answer of, very bad, somewhat bad, neither, somewhat good or very good. Being black and poor is a lifestyle. Being black and poor is a community. This book will give you understanding how structural racism among blacks is installed throughout history. The system is created to make sure the subject matter, blacks, in this case are subjected to fail. The crack epidemic in a Chicago neighborhood was only the beginning.
This book also has the perspective of the police, which show the gang violence as a more black and white or good versus evil issue, and their militant approach to gang reformation. Jorja Leap holds a view that to stop gang violence, the same members that were once gangbanging need to divert the youth away from the same lifestyle.

The story, Gang Leader for a Day by Sudhir Venkatesh, is a ethnographic study of a Black King Gang in the Robert Taylor community. Venkatesh accidentally stumbles upon the gang lead by J.T. and decided to study them. Throughout his journey he learns from the violence and illegal activity he witnesses that “in the projects it’s more important that you take care of the problem first. Then you worry about how you took care of it”’ (Venkatesh. 2008:164). He witnesses beatings, selling of illegal drugs, and exploitation of residents; but he also gained a lot of knowledge about the community. Gangs have been a point of concern for states and societies around the world for centuries. Youth gangs are not exempt from that same categorization and have operated for the same amount of time worldwide. Over the last century however, a proliferation of youth gangs has been witnessed, especially among Hispanic youths immigrating into the United States. Researchers and scholars have offered multiple theories as to why youths, and Hispanics youths in particular integrate themselves into gang organizations. Three schools of thought arise when conducting gang integration research. Rational Economics Theory1 proposes that youths, and all individuals, join gangs for financial and material benefit. Cultural Deviance Theory considers youth gang members as exposed to a lower class subculture that rationalizes and even promotes crime, delinquency and gang membership, contrasting to the “normal” set of prescribed values and culture in more civilized society. Acculturation Theory argues that youths join gangs as a means to be acculturated by ethnically or compositionally similar peers, whether as a response to ethnic marginalization by members of the host country or inability to acculturate to their new home.
Historically, gangs began to develop around the time frame of the 1970’s. Irish gangs have been known to be the first initial gang, followed by the Germans, Jewish, and Italians (Pacheco, 2010, p. 10). Gangs are larger in population and tend to be more prevalent in the United States, compared to other countries. In 2008, statistics showed that there were 20,000 active gangs and more than 1 million gang members in the United States (Pacheco, 2010, p. 12). According to Pacheco (2010) there are different types of gangs. Although these gangs are formed for individual purposes, broken up, they can form a multitude of different types of gangs. There are your traditional gangs (Crips, Bloods). Business, profit gangs, which are generated around financial gains. Hate group gangs, which their purpose is to target different ethnic groups, races or homosexuals. Copycat and delinquent social gangs, which seem to be the least relevant. Street gangs, which are prone to target younger individuals, but the actual ages of the gang members vary. Third generation gangs which are known as “terrorist”. Hybrid gangs are new to this generation, they could be considered the “hipster” of gangs. Then there are prison gangs. They are usually small in population and are structured along an individuals ethnicity (Pacheco, 2010, pp. 12-15). Gangs serve a multitude of purposes for their members. The gang becomes their family. They are able to trust them, rely on them, and the gang gives them a sense of self and importance. Gangs have the ability to offer status, refuge, protection, and opportunity of stigma free life within this population (Tower, 2013, p. 82). Gang involvement has been quite higher than past years. The 2008 National Youth Gang Survey estimates that about 32.4 percent of all cities, suburban areas, towns, and rural counties had a gang problem (Egley et al., 2010). This represented a 15 percent increase from the year 2002. The total number of gangs has also increased by 28 percent and total gang members have increased by 6 percent (Egley et al., 2010).
