The story, Gang Leader for a Day by Sudhir Venkatesh, is a ethnographic study of a Black King Gang in the Robert Taylor community. Venkatesh accidentally stumbles upon the gang lead by J.T. and decided to study them. Throughout his journey he learns from the violence and illegal activity he witnesses that “in the projects it’s more important that you take care of the problem first. Then you worry about how you took care of it”’ (Venkatesh. 2008:164). He witnesses beatings, selling of illegal drugs, and exploitation of residents; but he also gained a lot of knowledge about the community. He works with J.T. and Ms. Bailey, the community leader, closely through his study. J.T. has taken a sociology class and he allows Venkatesh to shadow the gang …show more content…
Avoiding harm means that “social research should never injure the people being studied” (Babbie. 1992: 465). Harm is not only physical, but very often psychological also. The avoiding all harm ethical standard is very hard to fulfil in practice because “there is no way for the researcher to ensure against all these possible injuries” and there can always be small problems that no one can predict (Babbie. 1992: 466). That being said, research have an ethical obligation to prevent all harm that they can. If Venkatesh applied this ethical standard in his study, he would have learned how to avoid bringing harm to gang members. It is very important to understand that he must immediately report to police as soon as he learns if someone’s life is put in danger. Tacitly accepting gang’s rules puts everyone he met on the streets at risk. J.T. explains that “you [gang leaders] have to realize that if you [they] do that, then you [they] lose respect. They need to see that you [the gang leader] are the boss, which means that you hand out the beatings” (Venkatesh. 2008: 130). The participants need to know the risk that Venkatesh because he can put them in trouble with the law. If Venkatesh does not disclose this information to the people before they choose to be a part of his study he is putting them in unethical …show more content…
So he will keep all of the information he gains confidence. To conduct an ethical study in terms of confidentiality, “the research is able to identify a given person’s response is able to identify a given person’s response but essentially promises not to do so publicly” (Babbie. 1992: 468). When Venkatesh starts interview the residents to see how much they make, he writes it all the information down. After asking everyone, Ms. Bailey office and told to tell all the information. When Venkatesh tells them all the persona information, he breaches confidentiality when he reads his notes of incomes have. The act “I [Venkatesh] went through my notebooks and told them what I’d [he] learned about dozens of hustlers, male and female” to powerful people like J.T. and Ms. Bailey is unethical (Venkatesh. 2008: 200). Venkatesh knows that both hold a lot of power over the community, as they control the crime and resources that come in and out, and are not always honest in how they get their money. It is understandable that Venkatesh wanted to know if the numbers he was coming up with were correct, but he could have gone at it in a different way, like asking Ms. Bailey separately without disclosing any information. This breach in confidentiality causes ‘“he’s [J.T.] taxing every one of them now”’ because of the new information Venkatesh gave
As time went by, J.T. and Venkatesh met less and less and in the year 1998, most of the Robert Taylor buildings would be demolished. As their encounters were coming to an end, J.T. offers Venkatesh names of gang members in Newark and in New York, to enable Venkatesh to pursue his research elsewhere since his dissertation had long ago been finished which was written on the ways that people living in poverty made a living to get them by day-to-day.
This book was about a street gang called the Mighty Vice Lords. They were the second largest gang in Chicago with about 30,000 members. The Vice Lords started in the Illinois Training center (Juvenile Correctional Facility) for boys in St. Charles Illinois during 1958 and was led by Edward “Pepalo” Perry and Alfonso Alfred. This group was known to be brutal and violent. It discussed how a violent gang can become a community organization and change the way things were done for the betterment of the community. This information is important because it showed that gangs can become a positive force.
There is a deep seated hatred between rival gangs, which makes it difficult for the gang’s members to let go. Gangs became a source of income for some people, which made it difficult for many young African Americans to escape the gangs. Significance: This film shows how the police saw activist groups such as the Black Panthers and the U.S. Organization as a threat, which led to repression despite the Civil Rights Movement. This repression leads to anger and hatred and the need for a sense of belonging amongst the African American community.
A Climate of Fear “The Gang Crackdown”, provided by PBS, communicates the everyday struggles that the communities of Nassau County face every day. The video’s focus revolves around the homicidal and violent crimes that have been provided by the “MS-13” and the details of cracking down on their development. The Latin American gang from El Salvador is known for their audacity to target the young population of Long Island and their homicidal tendencies. They have targeted children and teenagers at their workplace, their home, and their school. These gang members have left the community defenseless and struck fear into the hearts of many parents along with the government itself.
Gang Leader for a Day written by Sudhir Venkatesh consisted of Sudhir himself studying, observing and partaking in a study for his dissertation on the South Side of Chicago with underprivileged African Americans who are gang affiliated. The methodological and ethical issues that were found in his book reflect potential strengths and weaknesses of his qualitative research. Venkatesh brought to light the dangers and awareness of being associated with the Black Kings gang, there were situations that were new to him that he had to adjust himself to and be cautious of for the future. Although there were a few ethical issues presented in his book, there was a greater lesson at large taken from his results.
CNN presents the documentary, Homicide in Hollenbeck, spotlighting gang activity in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Hollenbeck. This documentary explores the subculture of gangs existing within Hollenbeck from a several perspectives. The people documented include a mother who lost both of her sons to gang violence, a priest that has tried to help rehabilitate gang members, a police officer that has worked in Hollenbeck for five years in the gang unit, and a current gang member. For a conclusion, Homicide in Hollenbeck focuses on a juvenile exposed to gang life on the cusp of decided where they want their life to lead; gangs or freedom. Problems attributed to the high rate of gang activity and number of gangs in Hollenbeck are the high poverty rate, low employment rate, and broken families that make up the majority of Hollenbeck. The crime most discussed, as per the title of the documentary, is homicide The number of gang related homicides has risen even though the criminal behavior of gangs has ultimately decreased in the neighborhood. In order to fight the overwhelming gang presence, the police believe in increasing the amount of gun power on the streets and number of jailed gang members. The priest who runs Homeboy Industries stated that he feels most gang members are just young men who can’t get out of the gang life. With more funds and opportunities, he thinks the problem could be decreased. In the end, the documentary mentions that the FBI has formed a gang center where local law enforcement agencies can share information to gain more knowledge and to better fight the presence of gangs.
In the book “Gang Leader for A Day”, Sudhir Venkatesh, a sociologist in graduate school at the University of Chicago, did research in the projects with young men affiliated with gangs. The way he did it was so different because he actually presented himself in some of the most ghetto and dangerous projects. Sudhir Venkatesh first interacted with a gang when he went to a poor community asking questions. Venkatesh assignment was to get some information through gang members by asking them straight up questions, which they took offensive. Venkatesh learned that was not the way to approach gang members because anything bad could happen to him. After the gang members had him on lock down, because they thought he was a Mexican gang member, they told

They present us new answers, that were obtained by studies. For example, in chapter 3 “ Why Do Drug Dealers Still Live With Their Moms?”, you would think that selling drugs should be a great business. But Sudhir Venkatesh was a student in the University of Chicago that went to Chicago's poorest black neighborhoods for an assignment and ended up living with gang members. He was very intrigued to see how gang member’s organization worked from top to bottom. Venkatesh found out that the reason may drug dealers still live at home is because the organization of a gang is like a franchises only the top leaders are getting the big wage’s and the street dealers are only getting paid like $3.30 an
In Venkatesh’s Gang Leader for a Day, he violated many ethical codes when conducting his research in the Robert Taylor Homes. The ASA “Code of Ethics” states that there are four rules “1. To protect research subjects, 2. To maintain honesty and openness, 3. To achieve valid results, 4. To encourage appropriate application”(47 Chambliss & Schutt). Given these four guidelines we can see that Venkatesh’s work is in violation. A few examples are his lack of informed consent, an occurrence of deception that helped him receive his data, as well as the lack of confidentiality that the experiment had.

Gangs on reservations are just as violent as inner city gangs. There is a ridiculous amount of gangs in the world. There’s a gang in Africa1, Australia2, Asia3, Europe4, North America5, and South America6. Every continent with the exception of Antarctica has a gang on it. Not many people realize there are American Indian gangs, just as violent and menacing as those off reservations. American Indian gangs are continuing to rise just like any other gang7.
