Subsoil investigation is a type of site exploration that involves sampling and testing the soil at the site to obtain geotechnical information for a safe geotechnical evaluation and design. It is a discovery of the ground conditions which will be built on.

Structures – Record the position of any other structures on site structures shown on the air photographs or Ordinance Maps that have been removed. Soil and rock – Record and describe any exposed soils or rocks that are present. Samples should be taken to determine the rock and soil type. If there is soft soil you can dig shallow holes using an auger to get an idea of the soil characteristics. The auger is held vertically and is driven into the ground by rotating its handle. At every 30 cm of depth, the auger is taken out and the soil samples collected.Any holes created should be made good to prevent possible injury.

As a result, the branch of underwater archaeology was created to search for shipwrecks and other artifacts on the ocean floor. These soils are not as developed as other soil orders. Some soils that are categorized within Inceptisols that are common to this area are: Commerce, Mhoon, and Sharky. Commerce soils are found on the levee, composed of sand and silt, and are well-drained. Mhoon soils are found on the lower levee, composed of silty clay, and are poorly drained. Sharky soils are found in the backswamps, are very high in clay, and are poorly drained. However, there is a small portion of the western part of the parish that is of the Alfisol soil order. Alfisols are more developed than Inceptisols in such a way that there are more horizon distinctions that are visible. The goal for this activity would be to help toddlers learn how to explore, discover, and investigate physical properties of the earth. There would be a water table filled with dirt along with fossil rocks, regular rocks, and toy bugs. The toddlers would be allowed to take turns digging and sifting through the dirt looking for the fossil rocks. This gives them a spectacular opportunity to use fine motor skills and use their developing social skills. While they dig in the dirt the teacher would ask questions like “How does the dirt feel?” and “How many bugs can you find?”. “Finding Fossils” is a great activity for toddlers because they it will help build their social skills by letting them interact with other toddlers, it will help them build their fine motor skills when they use the digging tools, and it helps give them get a sense of the environment by letting them explore different concepts of the earth.
