Throughout the lesson on Leader Influence on Subordinate Behavior, I found Organizational Approaches to be the most important. Organizational approaches are most important to me because they are the aspects of work and stress that supervisors have the most control over. These approaches are things that I as a supervisor will control in order to maximize efficiency within the work center. When I first took over my flight’s support section, I overlooked many of the aspects of organizational approaches and paid the price. I assigned one individual who was slow and meticulous to a job that was fast paced. Upon returning to my shop, I will start with “Selection and Placement” to ensure that people and give the proper amount of responsibility based on the need for growth. I will give my current go-to shift leaders programs with the wiggle room to run the programs as they see fit. I will give more structured and straightforward programs to people who need less uncertainty in their daily lives. Once I have made the determinations regarding who is a good fit for which job, I will use “Goal Setting” to outline the exact standards that they are held to. These standards will push individuals to complete the mission while leaning on time management to get all required items accomplished. Next, I will turn to direct feedback to improve the “Organizational Communication” within my squadron. By having a sit down with people individually, I will be able to identify their roles and responsibilities to reduce doubt caused by overlapping of duties. I will have the same style of feedback sessions with my supervision in order to convey necessary information for my benefit as both a leader and their subordinate. As a last resort, I will lead anyone to the necessary “Wellness Programs” in order to assist in areas of struggle. These programs will ensure the people are capable of taking care of themselves. Possessing a shared understanding of the operational environment will aid in our planning process when conducting operations throughout our theater of operation. In every operation we execute we know that we will accept prudent risks, identification and mitigation of those risks will determine our ability to accomplish our mission. Incorporating the principles of mission command by building cohesive teams through mutual trust, fostering an environment of shared understanding, and accepting prudent risk will make me an effective adviser to the commander, aid the staff during the operations process, and provide an example for Soldiers to emulate. The learning obtained from the Leadership and Organizational Behavior course has been valuable. From this course, I have learned that while someone can be a manager or a leader, it is better to be both. The various topics discussed throughout the eight week course have provided the unique insight necessary to be an effective leader. The insight gained allow for the identification of the behaviors that an effective leader must possess and continually develop. By identifying these behaviors, I am better able to shape my leadership style and goals so that I can achieve my full career potential as a leader within my organization. Ultimately, I realize that it is important to both do things right and do the right things in all my actions within an organization.
However, the most effective one may be the transformational leadership theory. It is actually the leadership style that seems to utilized most in my current workplace already. There is very high demand required from employees which can create a stressful workplace environment sometimes. The transformational style of building relationships with employees can be used as a tool to combat this by addressing the employees as people and understanding them personally.
One of the most important components of leadership is the leader. A leader is responsible for his or her followers and the overall goal of the group or organization. Leaders are the people held accountable or everything that happens, good or bad. On the other hand, the second major component of leadership is the followers. Without followers, a leader would be worthless. Followers make up the backbone of a leader because they are the masses that get goals accomplished. A leader is just one person, but the number of followers is countless. In order to be an effective follower, there are a countless number of characteristics that allow a follower to be the best they can be. Five of these characteristics include a positive attitude, communication skills, being part of the process, being open to new ideas, and patience.

The behavior approach refocuses the interest from the traits to the leaders ' behavior. Leaders ' behavior becomes more important than their physical, mental or emotional traits. Ohio State University and the University of Michigan developed the two main studies of this approach in the late 1940s and 1950s. The studies have recognized two main behaviors: people-oriented and production-oriented behavior. According to the leader behavior approach, there are several behaviors that would be invariably effective for leaders, but empirical research does not show a strong relation between task-oriented or person-oriented leader behaviors and leader effectiveness.
Leaders require essential leadership skills to effectively lead. The Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Academy teaches those essential skills to enhance leadership ability out in the fleet. During my time at the CPO Academy, I acquired vital knowledge and skills in leadership throughout the classes I took which I will be taking back to the unit. One class that had a significant impact was the Facilitative Leadership class which gave me the tools to effectively run a meeting. In addition, the Change Management class provided me with the skills necessary to support Command Policy and get crew buy-in. Lastly, the Stress Management class imparted me with knowledge on how to deal with stress and mitigate it.
