Students with learning disabilities often struggle to make sense of written text, preventing them from comprehending materials at grade level as compared to their same age peers. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the theoretical foundations for the problem section of a dissertation on students with learning disabilities. The problem statement for the dissertation is as follows: It is not known the correct combination of reading strategies needed to improve comprehension of students with specific learning disabilities at the secondary educational level. There is significant history into various strategies as well as causes of what was first identified as the term “word blind” by Adolph Kussmaul, which was given to individuals in 1877 whom suffered strokes and later displayed a lack word comprehension and understanding (Scammacca, Roberts, Cho, Roberts, Vaughn & Carroll, 2016). Metacognition influences the manner in which students’ problem solve and utilize operations to guide their learning (Swanson, 1990). Camahalan (2006) states metacognition provides learners with ways of estimating the effects of their efforts, and to predict the likelihood of being able to remember the material later (p. 78).
