Informs the reader that several students were caught cheating and plagiarizing. It also
mentions the scandal in SMC surrounding Eamonn Daniel Higgins. Students Cheat
Themselves Out of an Education by Daniel Ross says, “Higgins was formally charged with
fraudulently assuming the identity of over 100 international students throughout a number
of academic institutions in California, including SMC, in order to taek exams under their
name.” Higgins admitted that he helped over 800 students from 2002 to 2009, the ICE was
only aware of around 100. Therefore I agree to the quote, “Cheating is going to happen.
There is no way to stop it.” I believe that it is impossible for teacher

to stop students from cheating. Even though cheating to me is a taoo, it is not fair for someone to cheat, because theirs people who study hard to get what they have.
In my first year in SMC I have seen several
of my classmates cheat while we are taking a test. For example, in my Anatomy class the
guy who sat next to me would cheat every time we had a test. He would have hes whole arm
written with notes of what the test covered. The guy did not get caught and passed the
class with a B. That is why I strongly agree that it is imposible to stop someone from
cheating. Unfortanetly people still do it. I have friends that cheat while they are takign a
test. They either write notes on their desk or they use the excuse to go to the restroom and
google what ever problem their having with the test. It sounds like what one of the
instructor’s said in the article Students Cheat Themselves Out of an Education by Daniel
Ross. The instructor said, “he found a student Googling the results of an exam on an
iPhone.” The article mentions Turnitin.com, a website that allows teachers to download
submitted assignments into one large database. If the teacher believes that the assignment
is to ‘good’ for that student, in other words plagiarized, the teachers submit to turnitin.com
and it would show them if its from any other assignment. Even though teachers
have access to this wonderful website, students still plagiarized. I don’t know why people like to cheating, when someone cheats you don’t learn anything and it also dishonest. People learn from bad experiences and by working hard. Yet there’s still students who like to cheat. Once again that is why I say, “that it is impossible to stop someone from cheating!”

In conclusion, I believe the writers of this article express that there are plenty of ways a student can cheat. I actually didn’t realize there are website that will write papers for you. Almost every student has cheated at one point or another for some reason they use to justify it and they could be any one of these forms of cheaters. Although all these types of cheaters will attempt to rationalize their cheating with various excuses and reasons there is no real justification. They all know it is the wrong thing to do, but will cheat anyways as they can get away with it and it will create the illusion of greater intelligence for themselves and that is a problem for the youth of America. It will make students learn to cheat better instead of actually learning the material assigned to them, resulting in a less intelligent generation.

Every year many students are kept from graduating high school because of these exit exams. This makes students and parents very angry. Students who have had high passing grades throughout high school do not understand why they cannot pass exit exams. Sometimes the student blames him or herself by thinking that he or she did not learn enough, when in fact there is nothing wrong without heir knowledge. These students do not realize that they lack good test taking skills. Parents are angry that their child was kept from graduating because of a single test, even though the child had all the he credits required. This situation occurred to Lee Hicks, another student from Paris (texas) High School. Had he lived 14 miles away in Oklahoma, which has no statewide exit test, he'd have received a diploma and would now be serving his country in the Navy. Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. They rationalize their unethical behavior, unwilling to accept a poor grade, consequently justifying cheating as the only means to that end.
Many self respecting and honest people can be motivated to cheat in this day and age. Will the prevalence of computers, text messaging cell phones and even the ipod in the classroom students have technology at their fingertips and therefore the accessibility to cheat. The computer allow you to Google almost anything. The cell phones allow you to text another student or even someone sitting at a computer. The iPod® allows you to listen to almost anything including the speech you may be writing about. We all want that edge over the person sitting next to us.
The first cause as to why students cheat is because they are lazy. It happens all the time, where students go home from school, have a snack, watch television, take a nap, play some video games, and just keep saying that they will do their homework later. The next thing they know it eleven o’clock at night and time to go to bed, but no homework was accomplished. The student keeps pushing back the assignment until the last minute and the last minute is not enough time. This is also known as procrastination. The student does not want to fail, but they were too lazy to do their own work, so they ask to copy the work from a friend that did the work. I once said something to a guy about how this was cheating and he told me that he was, “using his resources wisely”. Another time I asked a student next to me to stop copying my answers in class and he told, “Then you shouldn’t let me see your answers”, he blamed his cheating on me.
