Some students simply do not test well, others try their hardest and still cannot reach the impracticable standards set for them. The individuals who create these tests do not understand the pressures of being a student, or the struggle to answer thirty-five questions in a compressed time period. What is a test? The Webster’s New American Dictionary defines a test as “a critical examination or evaluation”. The World Book 2000 Encyclopedia defines testing as “an attempt to measure a person’s knowledge, intelligence, or other characteristics in a systematic way”. The Wisconsin 2004 freshmen will have to take a graduation test in order to graduate their senior year. They have four chances to pass the graduation examination. This paper will explain how the current requirements for graduating compare to the graduation standardized test. One of the biggest topics in the educational world is standardized tests. All fifty states have their own standards following the common core curriculum. There are many positives and negatives that go with the standardized tests. A standardized test is any type of “examination that's administered and scored in a predetermined, standard manner” (Popham, 1999). These standardized tests are either aptitude tests or achievement tests. Schools use achievement tests to compare students.
Tests consisting of only multiple-choice items are given a raw score based on correct answers on the test (ETS, 2011). No penalty is imposed for incorrect answers. Constructed response only tests are given a raw score from a composite of scores on individual items. Each item is read and scored by two qualified scorers who score according to a rubric and the sum of scores is the raw score for the item. For tests including both question types, raw scores are a weighted composite of raw multiple-choice score and individual constructed response scores.
All American states are required to test students in public schools to ensure that they are receiving the desired level of minimal education due to the No Child Left Behind Act. Examples of these tests would be the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) and Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus (ISTEP+). The No Child Left Behind Act also requires that students show an adequate amount of yearly progress. If this progress is not shown, it is mandated that the student gains remediation through summer school or tutoring. One of the greatest contributors to the difficulty of aligning assessments to standards is that the standards are so complex (LaMarca, 2001.) Before the lesson is prepared, the teachers must have a clear understanding of the objectives of the lesson to be taught. By having an understanding of what they students will able to accomplish at the end of the lesson, the content remains focused and thorough. The teacher must then express these objectives to the students including the standards for performance. Students can then be held accountable for expectations that are known.
With the proper guidance and support, teachers can achieve academic excellence in the classroom. They follow their principal’s vision and share their goals. Teachers also serve as leaders in their classroom. They share their vision and goals with their students promoting positive attitudes in the classroom. Just like it is important for principals to respect and understand what their teachers need, students also need the support, understanding, respect and empathy from their teachers. When teachers demonstrate commitment in the classroom and set high expectations they raise the level of learning in the classroom. Teachers that work with the students and their parents to understand and meet their needs will achieve positive academic outcomes.
