After years of education from K-12 there is still the question if a high school senior is academically prepared for college. Furthermore, it may be understandable for a concerned parent to pose this question but what about the student? In a survey of W.VA seniors, MMM MMM points out that “12.4 percent of survey respondents said they felt ‘very prepared’ for college, while . . . 10.7 percent felt they were ‘not prepared at all” (8). In these long years of education we expect students to be ready, but what does it mean to be ready for college? Needless to say, there is an issue with high school students being prepared for college. But in order to classify someone as being ready for college or not we have to come to a common understanding of what it means. A student that needs to take additional education to have the knowledge to be prosperous is not considered college ready (What Does College and Career Readiness Mean). When a High school senior leaves home and goes off to college he/she should have the potential to make all A’s throughout college. A student is college ready when he/she has acquired characteristics and skills from K-12, which include time management, perseverance, a drive to become successful, and a working knowledge of basic subjects: these can be reflected through, but not limited to, standardized test and the individuals GPA.
Today students go to school from K-12 earning their education and take a standardized test during their junior or senior years (sometimes sophomore year). Caroline Bird writes the statement in her 1975 article “The Case Against College (Bird 15-18)” that not every high school graduate is ready to attend college. It is 2010 and this article is still valid today. Some of the college students I have been around were not mature enough for obedience school let alone college. A few of the points she makes in the article are: College has never worked its magic for everyone. Does it make you a better person? Are colleges responsible for your children? Are my children living in a country club? I will use some of my own experiences as an example of college life, as well as examples from my daughter’s college experience, along with my nephews as well. As the economy evolves and the job market continues to get more competitive, it’s becoming harder to have a successful career without some kind of college degree. Standardized tests, such as the SAT and the SOL, have been implemented for many years now for individuals in grade school to take. For some the transition from high school to college could be difficult because they don 't have the right skill set that they need for college which they should 've to learn back in high school. The main skills are time management, good study habits, ability to set goals and maintain them, good note taking, organization skills, and commitment (Top 10). According to the NCES, nationwide, thirty to sixty percent of college freshmen require remedial courses in order to meet college admission requirements (2004). In Texas, 38 percent of Texas students enrolled in two-year colleges and technical schools and 24 percent of students at four-year public institutions took remedial courses during the 2006 academic year (Terry 2007). Twenty-eight percent of colleges in the United States report that students spend at least one year in remedial programs making it impossible to earn a degree in 2 or 4 years (NCES, 2003). These students have graduated from high school unprepared for participation in college courses. Unprepared student face both academic and financial barriers. Not preparing students for coursework and careers after high school is expensive. Remedial education courses are estimated to cost student one billion dollars annually. In addition, according to the ACT, despite participating in remedial classes, students who require remedial classes are significantly less likely to graduate from college (2005).
Colleges always want students to graduate and support their alma mater. However, this begins with deciding what students are mentally ready and determining the task that lies ahead, college. In today’s society, we struggle trying to find a proper definition for college readiness. This is the main reason statistics and graduation rates suffer in the way that they do. Just because a high school student reaches the age of 18, obtains a high school diploma, and has functional literacy, does that really make students college ready?
A recent survey was conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of Pearson Foundation in August and September 2011. The survey polled 1,205 community college students on various issues regarding school, including ease of getting necessary courses and the level of difficulty of college-level coursework compared to high school classes. According to the Harris Interactive website, the survey found that more than half (52%) of all community college students felt unprepared for college-level coursework. A variety of schools have the belief that the effectively prepare their students for college and because of that belief that they hold, they do not realize that their method is possibly not being as effective as planned. Proven by the Census Bureau, “Public high schools main emphasis is often preparing students for college, but according to the Census Bureau, only about 30 percent of the U.S. population graduates from college” (Quoted in SUU News 1).
