Teachers should be a positive influence on their student’s lives. They should not only teach them the basic subjects, but also try to make them become better people by being involved with them. Some parents don’t care how their children act and don’t try to help them overcome problems such as shyness; therefore it is left up to the teacher to help these students. Students spend a huge chunk of their lives in classrooms; the type of classroom helps or hinders them in life. Each student and teacher have reciprocal power; "reciprocal power enables teachers and students to undermine any attempt at domination by a single person in the classroom" (Pauly, 57). Students often use reciprocal power when they want to disrupt the class, screaming that they do not want to be in the class or do not want to learn. Teachers help us expand and open our mind by giving us skills throughout students’ early life to help students when they are older. This is important for giving the students a sense of purpose, as they will then be more motivated to succeed. This allows them to be more active in class activities and engage in discussion. Not only is trust important between teacher and student, but also between students. A student should not fear ridicule when providing their opinion or an answer. This is a teacher’s responsibility to establish a sense of community by allowing students to get to know each other and develop positive relationships throughout the entire classroom.
