Introduction
Person centred care is important as it ensures that the patient is involved in their care and is treated holistically, with respect, is empowered and given realistic choices about their treatment and care. (Royal college of nursing, 2015). I will be developing a personal development plan to reflect on my strengths, weaknesses, concerns and expectations in relation to my personal and professional development as a Student Nurse relating this to the professional values of nursing. I will be performing a literature review of texts relating to points raised in my SWEC analysis.
Using a SWEC analysis I will pick 3 points for each area and then discuss 3 of these points in more detail. See appendix 1 for full SWEC analysis. The 3 points I have chosen to look at are; my strength, clinical experience, my concern, transition from health care assistant to student nurse, and my weakness, dyslexia.

This means that the student risks being treated as a knowledgeable Health care assistant instead of a student (Hasson, Mckenna and Keeney, 2013). This is my main concern about transitioning from health care assistant to student nurse. Having spent many years working at my local acute hospital I have a good working relationship with many of the staff there, I worry that if I have a placement in this hospital that I will still be treated as I healthcare assistant and not a student nurse and that I may upset the staff if I try to pull away from the health care assistant
The definition of person centred care is to include an individual receiving treatment in all aspects and decisions of both their healthcare treatment and recovery care plan. The Professional Development Plan for Nursing Graduates is a program that was started by the government with the aims of creating a smooth transition from the student experience to workplace experience. Despite having learnt several ethical and professional contents, the professional development plan ensures that, all the graduate nurses have a smooth transition that ensures they deliver quality and standard services as expected of them (Gordon & Franklin, 2003). Under the nursing professional plan, the nurses are supposed to bring together personal and professional skills in order to improve the quality of the nursing practice in the country. One of the most important considerations before embarking on the development plan is to ensure that the graduate has all the relevant skills in terms of academic, professional and personal qualifications. Under the personal qualifications, the nursing graduates should make sure that their ethical and moral standards are compliant with the ethical guidelines as well as with the ethical traits expected of them by the society (Trossman, 1999).
In contemporary nursing practice, nurses need to integrate scientific knowledge and nursing theories prior to providing optimal health care. Nursing theories guide nurses to treat clients in a supportive and dignified manner through client centred approaches. However, it is challenge for nurses to practice client centred care in daily realities due to heavy workloads. In order to assist nurses to decrease the gap between ideal and real practice, Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) develops Best Practice Guideline of Client-centred-care (Neligan, Grinspun, JonasSimpson, McConnell, Peter, Pilkington, et al., 2002). This guideline offers values and beliefs as foundation of client-centred care, and the core processes of client-centred care can facilitate provision of optimal nursing care. These four core processes of client-centred care include identifying concerns, making decisions, caring and service, and evaluating outcomes. According to RNAO (2006), ongoing dialogue with clients and self-reflection are essential for nurses to develop their nursing skills and knowledge on client-centred care. As a nursing student, I reflected on written transcripts of interactions between patients and me, so that I could gain insights into client-centred care for further improvement. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss importance of the core processes of client-centred care in nursing practice through identifying and critiquing blocks to conversation. Based on the guideline of RNAO (2006), respect, human dignity, clients are experts for their own lives, responsiveness and universal access will be elaborated in each core process of client-centre care as reflecting on three dialogues with patients.
The concept of person refers to the recipient of nursing care, such that no person is the object of care and no aspect of wellbeing is left out (Arnold & Boggs, 2001; Thorne, Canam, Dahinten, Hall, Henderson, & Kirkham, 1998). This not only includes disease and illness states, but also psychological, social and spiritual dimensions. Therefore, factors such as gender, lifestyle, behaviors, beliefs, values, coping skills, habits, perceptions and lived experiences are considered (Arnold & Boggs, 2011). This holistic and multi-centered approach also extends to families, communities, and populations (Schim et al., 2007). The concept of person is central to nursing theory and research, and is fundamental to the, “Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses,” as outlined by the Canadian Nurses Association (2008). In practice, ‘person’ is used to guide client teaching and nursing interventions (Kozier, Berman, Snyder, Buck, Yiu, & Stamler, 2014).
This essay will explain what patient centred care is, how nurses use it in practice, the benefits of using it, and the barriers that need to be overcome to be able to use it, and the key principles of patient centred care. It will explain how patient centred care enables nurses to communicate and engage with the patients in a more effective way, and how it helps understand the uniqueness of each patient, which helps professionals avoid ‘warehousing’ patients (treating them all the same). It will also demonstrate how this type of care can help maintain the dignity of patients when nurses carry out tasks such as personal care. The Health Foundation describes patient centred care as being a type of health system where patients take control of their own care.
Poor care does not only result in bad press and public perception but also break the trust between the patient and nurse. Utilising the theoretical framework developed by Todres et all (2009) which explores eight central aspects of what it is to be human. Todres et al (2009). This model can be used to improve nursing care. Referring to the term ‘being treated as human beings’ not being treated as a number or object.
Reflecting on one’s own feeling, beliefs, fears, and weaknesses is a good way to evaluate the needs for improvement and limitations in a nursing practice. This paper will review my top three priorities for my nursing practice, barriers that challenge my priorities, my experiences in the clinical world and the different role models in the nursing profession. I will also be discussing my commitment to improving patient care and safety.
This paper explores the personal philosophy I have as a nursing student and what I intend to convey throughout my nursing career. A philosophy is “an analysis of the grounds and concepts expressing fundamental beliefs (Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, n.d.). Before entering into any profession it is important to evaluate your personal philosophy about the profession, as it pertains to values and principles in which believe in to guide your practice. The field of nursing is more than treating a physiological ailment, but it involves providing quality care for the individualized needs of each patient, hence being client centered. My philosophy of nursing integrates the importance of knowledge base practice of medicine, combined with addressing holistic needs of the patient and family, including the physical, psychological, cognitive, emotional, spiritual and social care (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, 2010). Additionally, a vital aspect of nursing is effective interpersonal relationships with other healthcare professionals to promote quality patient care. Moreover, my philosophy includes the importance the client-nurse relationship to aid in health promotion to prevent illness and increase the level of health of clients.
Assignment 2: Written Essay The principle of person-centred care has been said to increase positive patient outcomes and experiences, as well as being the foundation of safe and high-quality care (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, 2023). My journey to nursing began with my personal healthcare experience, and has continued to evolve since entering the nursing program at State University. My personal philosophy of nursing is related my life experience and my personal philosophy of life. Using reflection-on-action, I have begun to understand the influences that have lead me to nursing. I discovered client and family centered care to be an important quality when I look at the influential nurses in my life. To develop a positive therapeutic nurse-client relationship, nurses must integrate all 5 dimensions of the therapeutic nurse-client relationship into their practice (CNO, 2006). When it comes to providing client-centered care, the dimensions of trust, empathy and respect are particularly important (CNO, 2006). Illness can be a traumatic experience for patients and their families, and it is important to be empathetic to the patient’s needs, while still trusting the patient to be an expert in their illness and care.
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
The human being includes physical, mental, spiritual, and intellectual factors that are considered in the nursing profession. My view of each individual person has affected my practice in that I believe it is essential to view each person in a holistic approach, analyze, and assist in meeting basic physical needs. Because of this belief, it affects the way I practice in that I am careful to assess both physical and psychological states during all nurse-patient interactions.
Every nurse determines the way they will practice in the beginning of their career. More than likely these roles and values are created and sparked in nursing school. As time goes on, nurses dig deeper and establish who they are in their new role as a professional. When the metaparadigm of nursing and personal philosophy coincide with one another, individualized concepts, care, and professionalism are achieved and delivered in multiple settings. From a personal perspective, these concepts were established and developed very early in my career. Maintaining and establishing myself as a nurse remains a top priority ten years later in my practice.
The purpose of this paper is to define my professional nursing philosophy. I will utilize the nursing metaparadigm as a framework for integrating the concepts of person, environment, health, and nursing into my nursing practice. Secondly, I will discuss Jean Watson’s theory of human care and how this has personally impacted my profession as a nurse and guided my nursing philosophy.
