Impact of Being a Student Athlete Poor grades, no time for social lives, the constant struggle of injuries are all arguments that many will make when they oppose sports in high school. I disagree with those individuals. The involvement in high sports allows the students to develop time management, teamwork, responsibility, perseverance, and dedication. Despite the oppositions, these traits will help the student not only in the classroom, but they also will positively impact their futures. Mr. Steven Shockley, a political science teacher, a football coach, and a tennis coach at my high school, is a strong advocate of students being involved in sports. “I believe the involvement in sports during high school years allows individuals …show more content…
Shockley and Logan, I also conducted a survey that included fifteen of my fellow seniors. I surveyed a class with a mixture of students that participate in sports and some that do not. In the survey, nine of the students said they are currently participating in high school sports. Out of the remaining six people, two of them had participated in high school sports, but no longer participate. All of the nine students that participate in sports said that their sports had taught them important skills that have and continue to benefit them in life. “My sport taught me many lessons that I would not have been able to learn anywhere else,” said one of the student athletes in the survey. (survey) The two students that used to play sports both said that they regretted not continuing to play a sport in high school. They said they enjoyed being able to spend time with their team, but they did not have to drive to put the effort and time in the sport. The two students also said they feel that if they would have continued with their sports, then they would be better students in their classes when it comes to working hard, managing time, and being responsible. Of the four students who said they had not participated in sports while in high school, two said they wish they would have. The two students both agreed that they feel like they missed out on a exceptional opportunity that would have benefitted aspects of their future like school and careers. Although, they did not state that they feel they have benefitted any less in their classes or work environments. The last two students involved in the survey who do not participate in athletic said they do not regret passing up the opportunity. The students said they chose not to participate in sports so that they could focus on grades and their school work to prepare themselves for college. However, the non participatory students said they do not believe that grades, social lives, or
Playing a school sport enables you to bond with your teammates, making lifelong friends. Sports are fun and thrilling; they help kids get into shape. For years now there have been kids who play sports who also are very good in academics. Sports help kids get organized and teach them to balance their school work with sports. The article to start all the buzz about no sports in high school is written by
High school sports are approached with clashing opinions. Some of these opinions are positive, and supportive of athletics. “Athleticism, among many activities, offers teens a physical outlet to exert their troubles, anger, emotions, and other feelings” (Chen 1). This can be observed in nearly all of the football players in Friday Night Lights. This can also be noticed in the world today. “Athletics help high school students understand their own abilities and talents” (Chen 1). This piece of evidence is very accurate when describing high school athletes. Sports can make a high school student humble. As can be seen by the preceding information, high school athletics can have a positive impact on a student’s life.
Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. This study provides concrete evidence that high school sports can help to gain mental and social skills that will be used later in life
First of all high school sports are not beneficial because it puts too much stress on the kids because they want to make their parents happy and want to keep their grades up or if they don’t they could get cut from the team . The pressure from the parents is sometimes too much. According to KCRA.com this statement is important because it highlights that they have to worry about not getting dropped from the team because they have to make sure grades are staying up and then they have to worry about their practice and being a valuable player on the team. According to helpguide.org this could lead to, a lot of stress and that could be bad for the student because they might get health
So, considering that high school sports do give kids an opportunity to expand socially, keep them in shape, and healthy, an opportunity to make many friends, and a shot at getting a scholarship, and making it to the professional level in their sport. But long term, the negative effects are more in the sense it could damage a student permanently, from an academic level to a physiological level. Also, most of the positive things people would argue aren’t guaranteed to happen or isolate them from the negative effects. But when it comes to the negative side, a student would need to go through some of the stages, maybe not all, but for sure some. To sum it all up, high school sports are more negative on a student than positive, even though people tend to see only the positive things that can come from them.
n Addition to this with sports in high school student athletes need to keep up their grades in order to play the sport. Some people may say that when you participate in a sport, it takes away from your studying time and then makes you not as academically inclined as others. I believe that that statement is further from the truth in a recent article written by Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt “High-School Sports Aren 't Killing Academics” from The Atlantic Bowen and Hitt state that “We would expect to see a negative relationship between the commitment to athletics and academic achievement. However, the University of Arkansas’s Daniel H. Bowen and Jay P. Greene actually find the opposite. They examine this relationship by analyzing schools’ sports winning percentages as well as
High School sports allow a student to have a chance at not only increasing or maintaining physical fitness, but to be able to spend time with friends and fellow students to be able to work together to accomplish a goal that cannot be accomplished by individual efforts. For parents, sports can help their child by surrounding them with influences that support and promote good behavior both on and off the field/court. However, just because sports offer adolescents positive influences and rules to follow doesn’t mean that the students will decide to abide by these rules even though they are usually the logical and correct choice to make. Some student athletes still feel that there is a need to rebel against such rules, which usually results in the athletes being deprived of the sport or sports that the athletes deeply cherish. While a teenager in athletics has the opportunity to achieve their athletic goals without risk from outside activities, there are those who choose to allow those risks to destroy their personal goals and dreams in their high school athletic careers.
Imagine what the world of college football would be like without Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow was homeschooled throughout his life, but was able to play football at a local public high school in Florida throughout his high school career. The controversy of home school students playing in public school sports has been going on for many years. According to the Home School Leaders Defense Association (HSLDA), there are currently 21 states that have already allowed homeschool students to participate in public school extra-curricular activities, while other states are still debating, including the state of Alabama. The HSLDA, states that " In 2016 the Alabama High School Athletic Association amended its bylaws to allow homeschoolers and other 'non-traditional'
Gould writes that “Leading youth development experts contend that one of the potential benefits of sports participation is the development of initiative or the ability to set and go after goals.” High school sports help kids to learn how to set and go after goals; an important lesson for every stage in their lives. Gould also states that the “National Federation of State High School Activity Associations indicates that [high school sports] promote ‘participation and sportsmanship’” (Are High School Sports Good For Kids?). In addition to setting and achieving goals, school sports develop participation and sportsmanship and positively build character in children. Overall, along with helping kids become more sociable, high school sports promote goal setting, participation, and sportsmanship in
It will encourage students to try their best to accomplish superior grades. It opens their eyes in a different perspective on behavior as well as stronger scholastic peer relationships. It gives students activities excluding school work, because teenagers generally focus their mind on unacceptable actions. Parents commonly show passion along with appreciation when their child/children play a sport. They get to have a closer relationship and be elaborate with them more often than normal. Frequently, students do not care about their reputation or acknowledge the adults’ opinions on themselves; but in my opinion, playing sports and being mostly involved with their schools presents an improved character while in school and once they graduate. I was once told that “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” Additionally, self-esteem in high school is hard to come by, occasionally sports help! Sports cause you to interact with other people and uplift you to do better. It presents a sharpened perspective on your schoolwork, career, future, and life altogether. In some cases, playing a sport can benefit you in an enhanced form. Scholarships can be a broad opportunity for valuable players with a good education on their shoulders. As well as, college recruitment can be another option. Money is hard to come by for college and if that seems to be a struggle for a student playing a sport can help tremendously. That
Many people think that sports can negatively affect how a student performs academically. In fact, in 2009, the University of California at Berkeley voted to ask the chancellor to stop funding the cost of intercollegiate sports, and use the money for other things around the campus that focus more on the “Academics First” resolution. “We look to the Academic Senate to represent faculty interests in maintaining the integrity of UC Berkeley as first and foremost a site of research and learning. At a campus ranked best public university in the world for its academic quality, academics must come first”. But there are also so many reasons why students should participate in physical activity and why athletics need to stay a very important part of any school’s focus, elementary through college level. Playing a sport helps you learn better time management, improve social and emotional skills, and your brain becomes more active.
Being a student athlete not only entails motivation on the playing field but also in enhancing your education and learning skills such as leadership and communication. I have done extensive research on this topic and found many misconceptions that lead athletes to be the stereotypical jock. In today’s society many people have different views on athletic involvement enhancing academic development (Joseph). There are many reasons to believe why it does and does not matter. However, there has been research done that critically analyzes student athletes and non-student athletes. Some studies say that student athletes do not have the same competitive motivation in the classroom as they do on the playing field, while others state that being a student athlete helps promote better development in the classroom

Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
Many would disagree with me and say that high school sports actually have more benefits than negativities for a student. For example a student in sports would be more active which would make them fitter and healthier. A student that in a team sport would make more friends which would improve their social skills and increase their
