I Anthony Jerome Mahan am writing this appeal letter in attempt to be reconsidered for readmission here at Ashford University. Subsequently, over the last several months I have been battling with internal triggers, such as anxiety, frustration, flashbacks and sadness that all relates to my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) disability. Primarily, I have come to recognize that these internal triggers were offset by external triggers that referenced back to personal experiences that I endured in the United States Army. In particular, the division that I served in was the 82nd Airborne (Combat Engineering), and it required me to handle explosives, artillery, and the duty of jumping out of airplanes on a daily basis. Chiefly, this plan of action includes a change in my medication, additional counseling sessions, and me enrolling in the Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) program, which is designed to help Veterans like myself to develop a rehabilitation plan that will lead to employment based on my personal interest of obtaining my Bachelor degree in Business Administration here at Ashford University, in conjunction with reintegrating me back into the community at the highest functional level possible. In addition to utilizing these effective methods, I will also make sure to keep an open line of communication with my Student Advisor Joan Welch and my Lead Veteran Access &Wellness Counselor Ashley Kirwan in order to stay on track with achieving my goals that are expressed within my plan of
PBS’ Frontline film “The Wounded Platoon” reviews the effects the Iraq war has had on soldiers as they return home and transition back into civilian life, focusing particularly on the rise in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among American military members from Fort Carson Army base (Edge, 2010). Incidents of PTSD have risen dramatically in the military since the beginning of the Iraq war and military mental health policies and treatment procedures have adapted to manage this increase (Edge, 2010). In “The Wounded Platoon,” many military personnel discuss how PTSD, and other mental health struggles, have been inadequately treated (if at all) by military mental health services. Reasons and Perdue’s definition of a social problem allows us to see inadequate treatment of PTSD among returning United States military members as a social problem because it is a condition affecting a significant number of people in undesirable ways that can be remedied through collective action (Reasons & Perdue, 1981).
PTSD has been intensely studied to benefit those who have been diagnosed, to get better treatments. There have been many successful cases, where the individual has conquered it. Marcus Luttrell’s symptoms have dramatically gotten better because he is a strong individual with a healthy family to support him. However, there are many people that have been dealing with this burden for years and may never get better. These men and women, who cannot find relief from PTSD, turn to self-harming; military suicides have been on the rise in the recent years and are continuing to increase. This cannot be ignored. The Veteran Administration needs to step up the treatment and recovery programs before this number begins to get out of control.

My name is Kaha Salad and I am appealing my Satisfactory Academic Progress suspension. Autumn semester of 2013 was a difficult time for me, I was going through many different changes in my life and I just didn’t know how to adapt. It should come as no surprise that for a variety of reasons, all stemming from combat experience, many of our nation's Veterans will act in unconventional or perhaps even illegal ways, in an attempt to cope with the stress of their military service. It may be easy for some to say that these men and women, despite their service, are criminals and should be locked away like any other who breaks the law. However, if rehabilitation is truly a goal of our justice system, it would not make any sense to take a group of offenders suffering from the side effects of combat experiences and throw them in prison, which is little better than combat anyway. This is why the advent of Veteran’s Courts is so important. Due to their service, and the effects that PTSD and other service related conditions may have on their criminal behavior, Veteran’s courts are not only an honorable way to treat our nation’s defenders, but a way in which to protect them from the negative impact of incarceration.
After over 15 years of working as a CNA and Caregiver, I decided that I wanted to continue my education in the medical field. In 2013 I took the first step towards gaining a better future with more experience as a medical professional. I enrolled into a Medical Assistant program at IBMC college of Longmont. It has been a long road and I am almost to the finish line having gained essential skills needed to move further into my career. It has been a grueling and eye opening experience for me being an adult learner returning back to school at 33 years of age. Hundreds of thousands of United States veterans are not able to leave the horrors of war on the battlefield (“Forever at War: Veterans Everyday Battles with PTSD” 1). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the reason why these courageous military service members cannot live a normal life when they are discharged. One out of every five military service members on combat tours—about 300,000 so far—return home with symptoms of PTSD or major depression. According to the Rand Study, almost half of these cases go untreated because of the disgrace that the military and civil society attach to mental disorders (McGirk 1). The general population of the world has to admit that they have had a nightmare before. Imagine not being able to sleep one wink because every time you close your eyes you are forced to relive memories from the past that you are trying to bury deep. This is what happens to the unfortunate men and women who are struggling with PTSD. Veterans that are struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder deserve the help they need.
Over the next two years, I will work towards completing 3,000 hours of post licensure internship while continuing my education in a doctoral program. After completing the doctoral program, I would like to hold dual licensure as a professional counselor and psychologist. In the next 10 years, I would like to work at the collegiate level as an educator in psychology and/or counseling. My ultimate career goal is to operate a program for at risk men and women ages 18 to 25. The program I hope to create will focus on the transition to independence process (TIP) model. My focus will be to provide psychological services for young people who are aging out of foster care, have a juvenile record, or are teen parents. A survey of OEF/OIF Veterans identified major rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, alcohol-related problems, social and family problems, and suicidal behavior. I wish to enroll in the Occupational Therapy Program at Loma Linda University in order to pursue my interests in rehabilitation for individuals of all ages with varying health concerns. As a rehabilitation psychology and psychology double major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, my undergraduate curriculum has provided me with a strong background in research and critical thinking skills. After deciding to pursue a career in occupational therapy, I enrolled in the “Orientation to Occupational Therapy” course which answered many of my questions and curiosities surrounding occupational therapy as a profession. I found myself excited for class every week and applied the information that I learned while volunteering with occupational therapists at Children’s Therapy Network and Capitol Lakes. The theories and practices in this subject along with the relevance to my interests in a clinical setting impressed me.

As a first year graduate student enrolled in the Masters of Social Work program at Binghamton University, I have a deep interest in pursuing my education to establish a career in clinical social work. I envision myself in a position that provides mental health services to my community. Student veterans enter the classroom and the workforce with many concerns and needs but also many skills gained throughout their time in service. Skills in leadership, team work, organization, structured work habits and advance special training specific fields is a broad overview of skills gained. With their skill intact, student veterans must also handle the issues of mental health, disability financial aid, community engagement, and career are among the many needs to be sought after,
I am writing this letter to you to express my interest in joining the Student Discipline Council (SDC). The reason why I am interested in joining SDC is because I will be able to gain professional experience and leadership skills.
