Stress Inoculation Training program developed by Donald Meichenbaum in the 1960’s is a cognitive behavioral method of altering an individual’s maladaptive thinking patterns about themselves as well as their past experiences. As a complex, individualized and flexible form of cognitive behavioral therapy, its’ goal is to modify the person’s emotional responses to stressful situations in order to prevent or diminish depression, anxiety and boast their coping repertoire. Areas in which SIT is used range from persistent anxiety provoking events to sequence of stressful events such as post-traumatic stress disorder. During this phase, an analysis of the stressful experiences and reactions are conjured, triggers for the individual are explored. The second phase puts emphasis on acquiring coping skills and consolidation of said skills that they may already possess. Here, the goal is to work towards a generalization of coping skills that can be maintained and used in future preservation of treatment effects. In the final stage, SIT gives opportunities to the individual to apply coping skills discussed during the sessions. In this study, treatment included nine twice weekly sessions consisting of 120 minutes each, followed by seven sessions of ninety minutes. During the first two sessions information from the client was collected, treatment rationale was discussed while the remaining sessions included teaching coping skills, managing stress through breathing exercises, deep muscle relaxation, thought stopping, guided self-dialogue and role-play. ... By scheduling an activity that the client can participate in and complete, it can give them a sense of mastery in a specific task. This can be beneficial for the client to feel accomplished. Another technique that I feel can be beneficial in therapy is role-playing. Role-playing can be helpful for a client to learn how to dispute irrational beliefs by becoming aware of negative feelings towards theses beliefs (Tan, 2011). In addition, role-playing can help the client to overcome their emotions and practice coping skills that are more effective. The last technique I would incorporate into therapy would be relaxation training. I would suggest ways that can help the client relax including, deep breathing, meditation, yoga, a massage or exercising. By getting the client to have methods to relax, I think it can help with managing their thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
Although, this session ended with amazing results, I feel as though I need more practice with this type of therapy. I have to continue to practice on allowing the patient to come up with their own solutions. I found it hard not giving advice to my client, because I already knew the situation. However, in the end I found myself very proud, because even though this was not a real therapy session, but the client was able to find a real solution to her problem. In today's society, individual counseling is becoming more main-stream with increased usage within the school system, family unit and even the military. The role that a counselor can have on any individual varies according to the chosen theory to practice and the approach taken. However, it must be stated that the approach and success of therapy is dependent on the relationship established by the therapist (clinician) with the client. In 2010 Seligman proposed the BETA treatment system, which stands for background, emotions, thoughts, and actions. According to Seligman, all theories are either focused on a person’s background, emotions, thoughts or their actions. For this reason, we will discuss three prominent forms of individual counseling therapy used today. The three types of therapy are Adlerian Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused Brief Therapy. Some of the stress management techniques that I learned from this course are prioritization, scheduling, and execution. Using these techniques has effectively helped me deal with my own stress. When it comes to dealing with stress I still have many strengths and weaknesses that I will explain. Some stressors I have in my life that I will discuss are psychointrapersonal, social, life events, and daily hassles. Next, I will give my opinion on my post-course survey, and compare and contrast it to my pre-course survey scores. Finally, I will explain my last goals for this stress management course.
