The purpose of a strength based approach is to promote positive change. The video clearly stated that “the people who stand to lose from change has all the power and those who benefit from change are poor”. The idea is to use this approach to refocus people living in poverty mindset to think more of using their talents, skills, strengthens, and to use them toward a way of building their community out of poverty. People living in poverty have to be aware that building their community by starting small businesses and offering opportunities for employments is a way out of the system. Those that live on welfare aid are trapped in a cycle that would keep them impoverish due to not having accessibility to resources, services, and funding. Implementing the strength based model allows for those to see the opportunities of growth, solutions, and hope within people. It takes the focus off the problem, labeling, and stigmatize people in poor communities. The approach is only successful when and if all those in the community including health services and care providers come together to make an effort to educate and make people aware of how to go about becoming resourceful during crisis or how to deal with life obstacles, challenges before they occur. This will make people more prepared and will keep them from falling into the system when life stressors
People are often faced with many challenges that force them into poverty, which often is out of their control. A person that lives in poverty has the ability to take hold of their lives and go on to become productive is inspiring to me as a student of the social work cohort. Striving to become a social worker and reading this book allowed me the insight of the different people that I will encounter on a daily basis. As a social worker I will come intact with a variety of people that live in poverty, as well as some that do not. The people that I will encounter will be recovering addicts, people that are faced with unemployment that are struggling with paying bills or providing food for their families. Another thing that stays with me is the few that can live just above the poverty line, as well as the many that live in poverty daily. Advocating, counseling, or educating is one area of social work that I will have to provide for clients. In thinking about this, there are many services that can help individuals and family. These services only aid the persons and will not take them out of the condition known as poverty. Families fall in and out of poverty easily during their life time. With that being said, there are families that receive a much needed hands up, which allows them to fall out of poverty. But the fear of poverty looms constancy at their doors. One of the most important things that a person that lives in poverty can do is to strive for a better education. With a higher education there are more opportunities for advancement within the work force. The advancements that are rewarded with a higher degree of education will enable poverty stricken families to a better way of living. Which will provide a higher income, medical insurance for health problems, better education, and better housing opportunities. This is another area that my studies will enhance my ability when working as a social worker.
People living in poverty can be thought of as a “them” who can be easily ignored and forgotten; when, in reality, poverty can affect anyone. When people are living in poverty, sometimes it is not their fault. Often, unfortunate events that are out of someone’s control can set them up for failure. For example, the poverty rate for disabled adults from the age of 18-64 is 28.5%, while disabled 18-64 year olds only make up 7.7% of America’s population (Proctor, Semega, and Kollar 16). Therefore, poverty disproportionately affects disabled adults. The stories of those living in poverty are incredibly diverse, as Sasha Abramsky points out in The American Way of Poverty:
That is, looking at a person holistically in order to determine what skills, networks, or resources a person might have in order to face a challenge. In this instance, Charo’s strength outweighed her weakness. Even though her husband tried to break her down and she was mandated as if she wasn’t the victim; in which the student thinks that feeling was ineffective to the client. It made her feel more of how she was already feeling, like a victim. Charo still remained strong and cooperative for her children; to seek some help to get out of her domestic relationship. As stated in the reading, “She continued to attend the group sessions for support and found new friends who had become a support network for her. She also completed a financial empowerment program, which further taught her how to manage her finances” (Plummer & Brocksen, 2014). This implies strength in Charo to be able to turn her life around and gain the support she needed, because without her strength and willingness to get help none of this would have been
In this book, the authors Tom Rath and Barry Conchie examine the question “What are the keys to being an effective leader?” To answer this question they had a team that reviewed data collected from Gallup polls. The data came from interviews from 20,000 senior leaders, over a million teams and more than fifty years of Gallup Polls of the most admired leaders in the world. The authors then had the team do a study of more than 10,000 followers to find out why they follow the influential leaders in their life.
Utilizing strengths based perspective with clients enables social workers to focus on the client and family strengths and abilities instead of focusing on the client and family’s problems, bad behaviors and pathologies. The strengths based perspective applies six principles that guide the social worker professional in assisting client’s with the strengths based model; we all have areas of strength, but sometimes it takes an unbiased third party to notice and help others clearly see what they are capable of achieving, even in the midst of their crisis.

In the lecture presentation by Dr Homes (Homes) he discussed how the strength-finder is a tool that he uses in his operations to help and identify strengths that both compliment and fill missing gaps. These assessments help identify compatibility. Compatibility includes your co-workers, superiors, subordinates and other in the work place but also in your personal life. He discussed the need to understand the strength of others so that we can relate to them better. And by relating better, we are able to manage, motivate and lead them better. He clearly articulated the value of the strength finder assessment for better leadership.
Imagine being in a working environment where your flaws are never at the fore front. Imagine being a part of a team that values the strengths of each person, and practices the know how to move quickly from storming to norming in the teamwork cycle. Is this a reality that will produce results for all involved? Is there every such a style? To answer these questions, it is important to look at what leadership theory currently causing success in the professional world. One theory is called Strengths Based Leadership, or positive psychology. This concept is gaining a following; starting with the father of positive leadership, Donald Clifton. Many reforms in the UnitedStates have been passed to help fight against the “War on Poverty”; but it has not been effective in eradicating poverty in the U.S. There are about 46 million people who are living in impoverished conditions and poverty continues to be a social issue in this country (Heritage Foundation, 2011) In the beginning, our country was formed under the belief that “this land is the land of opportunity and if we worked hard enough the American Dream can be gained” (Schwarz, 1997). People immigrate to this country today in hopes of becoming rich so they could gain a better life. In spite of coming to this country for a better life, many are faced with the lack of skills and money to succeed. In the end, most will end up in unskilled labor jobs that can barely support their families. Poverty continues to be a growing social issue because people have the “ inability to provide necessities like clothes, healthcare, and shelter” (Heritage Foundation, 2011) to help themselves and their family; therefore, many sacrifices have to be made to insure their survival. Yet many reforms made to help people living in poverty are based “off of outdated statistics” (Henslin, 2014, p.276) and are not enough to help the lower class maintain a sufficient standard of living. Poverty relates to conflict theory since the poor are struggling just to get by. Government programs such as Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), housing assistance, and food stamps provided by the government are not enough to help the poor gain social mobility.
People are poor because there’s something lacking in them, and changing them is therefore the only effective remedy. From this he suggests doing away with public solutions such as affirmative action, welfare, and income support systems, including “AFDC, Medicaid, food stamps, unemployment insurance, and the rest. Many people do not realize that there are tens of millions of people in America who are living in poverty because they are stuck on the fact that America is one of the richest nations. People who are living in poverty barely have enough money to survive on basic necessities like food, shelter and electricity. They often have a hectic schedule filled with work, school, or other activities that they have to do in order for them to live a somewhat stable life. Unfortunately, there are others who are living in poverty that may be ill or disabled and barely able to survive even if they are receiving money to help with their situation. There are a few programs that help those in poverty with their financial problems, but they only help them to a certain extent. Changes need to be done to help alleviate the poverty rate because these people should not have to deal with all of these hardships or have such a negative perspective of life. Therefore, America can reduce its poverty by raising the minimum wage, making health care more accessible, and by making child care more affordable. These solutions will be a great start to reducing poverty and they will lead America into a brighter future.
The aim is to try and bring down the poverty levels and encourage dependency, helping low income recipients in housing, food, medical assistances along with educating, will help alleviate a lifestyle of self-destruction. The programs must stop empowering people to believe that resources will always be usable if you continue to enable themselves on the poverty level. From reaching the cookie jar on the top shelf to donating to those living in poverty, every individual faces certain issues that require the guidance of someone older or stronger. Without the guidance of these people, it would be more difficult for the individual to efficiently solve any problems they may encounter. Whether the strong should support the weak is a topic that has raised many debates, with many fictional and real-life examples. Though society now emphasizes that the strong should support the weak, many still oppose that way of thinking. The strong in society should support the weak because of the various health benefits, self-benefits and societal benefits.
