“Storm Warnings” is a short poem that not only portrays the externals storm approaching outside, but the internal storm of depression the speaker is affected by. In four stanzas, Rich explains the progression and the protection while dealing with depression. With the storm approaching, the speaker knows what to do to protect herself. The only problem with a storm is that one cannot prevent it from happening. With the use of Rich’s poetic devices such as imagery, sentence structure, tone, and repetition, she is able to portray the deeper meaning within her poem. In this short poem, the symbol of time was repeated many times to portray how fragile time and life is. Time is beyond all of our control. The speaker’s word choice throughout this poem also portrayed many hidden messages. The glass was a metaphor explaining how harsh the rain was and how consistent it was, shattering each time. The glass also symbolized the fragileness of the speaker in this poem was and how much like the rain, depression also was consistent and something the speaker struggled with daily. Rich also used connotation with the phrase “shattered glass.” The shattered glass symbolized the sharpness, abruptness, and painful the depression was. The speaker was unable to control when her depression occurred. The shattered glass and depression are also much like a storm, there is no stopping it from happening. Another phrase Rich used was “insistent whine.” In this poem, the insistent whine symbolized something that is long-lasting, hard to get rid of and something that will not go away. Depression is much like an insistent whine. A constant reminder and deep within. It is also something that is very difficult to get rid of and although you can take medicine to help treat it, it never fully goes

This is almost a story like layout with a beginning a complication and an ending. Thus the poem has a story like feel to it. During the process of growing up, we are taught to believe that life is relatively colorful and rich; however, if this view is right, how can we explain why literature illustrates the negative and painful feeling of life? Thus, sorrow is inescapable; as it increase one cannot hide it. From the moment we are born into the world, people suffer from different kinds of sorrow. Even though we believe there are so many happy things around us, these things are heartbreaking. The poems “Tips from My Father” by Carol Ann Davis, “Not Waving but Drowning” by Stevie Smith, and “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop convey the sorrow about growing up, about sorrowful pretending, and even about life itself.
The poem begins by explaining the sluggishness of time and sets the mood for the rest of the piece. The repetition of the word “slow” was employed by the author in order to emphasize that changes in life occur very slowly and may even pass unnoticed. However, it is still important to recognize that time is progressing, but it takes so long that it’s hard to realize so. Not only the words, but the figures of speech and other such elements are important to analyzing the poem. Alliteration is seen throughout the entire poem, as in lines one through four, and seven through eight. The alliteration in one through four (whisky, waltzing, was) flows nicely, contrasting to the negativity of the first stanza, while seven through eight (countenance, could) sound unpleasing to the ear, emphasizing the mother’s disapproval. The imagery of the father beating time on the child’s head with his palm sounds harmful, as well as the image of the father’s bruised hands holding the child’s wrists. It portrays the dad as having an ultimate power over the child, instead of holding his hands, he grabs his wrists.
As the tone changes the perspective of the reader changes as well. There is no clear way to determine whether the speaker is responding to her situation with the appropriate amount of madness or is actually going mad and escaping into her own mind. Plath’s poem shows how a woman 's happiness was defined by her relationship to a man, which is enough to infuriate or drive any woman insane. The speaker struggles to continue her very existence because of her lost love. It is true that the speaker is very emotional and feels things very deeply, but that is not enough to prove that she had lost her mind. By the end of the poem the speaker seems to realize that she is wasting her time waiting on a man. She would rather have a present love that is completely unfathomable than a real love that is not around. The repetition in this poem makes the reader believe this loss is actually causing the speaker to lose her mind, but through changing tones that mirror the emotions anyone would go through in a situation of loss like this the speaker’s response is completely

Whether a writer’s choice of diction is cheerful, bitter, or in Robert Hayden’s case in his poem “Those Winter Sundays,” dismal and painful, it is the diction that formulates the tone of the piece. It is the diction which Hayden so properly places that allows us to read the poem and picture the cold tension of his foster home, and envision the barren home where his poem’s inspiration comes from. Depression is quiet. I had learned that at the beginning of high school when all of the sudden, my self-depreciating thoughts had gone silent. The feeling of elation I had experienced that moment was mighty. I felt that it was too good to be true, that there was no way that I had freed myself of the depression I experienced since my childhood. And I was right. I learned that silence was deafening, it was louder than any of the hateful words I told myself.

I found out that this poem had a portion of metaphors, similes, and imagery and personification throughout the entire poem.
