Storing the Impossible: Hydrogen

The earth’s supply of gasoline is slowly diminishing along with the cleanliness. In a desperate attempt to save precious gas, scientists have been attempting to find new ways to store and use energy. One way that scientists are consistently trying out is storing hydrogen. According to Demirbas(2001), “Because hydrogen can be easily generated from renewable energy sources and water, it has great potential as an energy source” (p. 287). When using hydrogen, the product leads to zero emissions (Yocular & Olgun, 2008, p. 309). If not that, then carbon-free or carbon neutral systems are formed (Yocular and Olgun, 2008, p. 309). Alternative-energy researchers have attempted to find materials that have properties that can resemble those of sponges (Baker, 2005, p.82). This way, the materials could ‘soak in’ the hydrogen and then hold it until it is further needed (Baker, 2005, p.82). There are many ways of storing hydrogen, but what is the most effective way to store it?
In most cases, hydrogen cannot be stored by itself. Because of this, hydrogen is usually stored in forms of hydrides. One example of a hydride is called a fuel cell. Although other forms of storing hydrogen are found to be difficult, Eisenstien (2000) has found that the cell is not a very complicated device (Eisenstien, 2000, p.22). This is because all that there is to do is to pump hydrogen into one side and then pump oxygen on the other (Eisenstien, March 2000, p.22). This results to the gases combining to form energy and water vapor, which can be used to run electric motors (Eisenstien, March 2000, p.22). Another type of hydride is called a reformer. In the first article "The Curse of Water Bottles" the author is obviously trying to convince people to stop wasting bottles and recycle. For example "There are solutions like using your own personal water bottle and refilling it" and that would save from buying water bottles, and reduce some of the waste. It also states "Some cities are fining homeowners and businesses for not recycling" so that means even cities are trying to get people to stop wasting water bottles. Companies and/or states have tried putting rewards on the bottles if you return them, as stated "Some states have tried to put a nickel return fee on water bottles like those on soda and other beverages" but it still doesn't work out for everyone, because "grocery
Hydrogen lies in one of the copious replacements for gasoline. It is not an energy source such as oil, but an energy carrier that is produced instead of digging and finding it underground. Though replacing fossil fuels by hydrogen fuel cell is very hard and costs a great deal, for the most part, hydrogen fuel cell is a zero carbon emission fuel which highly reduces the carbon emissions that causes pandemic global warming. Water is something we need to maintain homeostasis at both an environmental and biological level. It is necessary to all life forms and keeps this world going. This is an amazing molecule that seems so small but means so much. We have uncovered the history and the meaning of this beautiful molecule, but we also discovered a shocking truth. The amount of water in demand doesn’t meet the supply within the world. I discovered much during this discovery, some that I already knew and others that I found very interesting.
For our project, our client, gave us the task of designing and developing a teaching aid that uses hydrogen to power a mechanical device. This task led us to the construction of a hybrid fuel cell/battery-powered model hovercraft. The hovercraft, which we call “Hovercraftica”, uses a battery to power the lift fan and two hydrogen fuel cells to power the fan that provides thrust. Hovercraftica is a self-contained demonstration unit with every aspect of its propulsion onboard. The hydrogen for the fuel cells is produced through the electrolysis of water. This is achieved by collecting light energy via a solar panel and sending it through the fuel cells.
Besides drinking it to survive, people have many alternative uses for water. These can be : cooking, taking a bath, washing clothes, washing cooking and eating utensils; such as billies, saucepans, crockery and cutlery, keeping houses and communities clean, recreation; such as swimming pools, keeping plants alive in gardens and parks. Water is made up of two Hydrogen atoms and one Oxygen atom. Water is the most common element found on earth. Water may exist in liquid, solid and gaseous states. Water as water itself in liquid form, then it becomes solid when frozen and it can also become a gas when it is in its water vapor state.

Hydrogen is a diatomic element that is in a gaseous form at room temperature. Its most identifying characteristic is the fact that it is highly explosive. It is the lightest element in the world, and has a lifting power of 8% more than that of helium. Hydrogen was used in airships and zeppelins for more than 20 years during the beginning of the 20th century. This practice stopped abruptly after the German airship Hindenburg disaster over New Jersey. It is used in fuel cells to create electricity, and to power cars and planes. Liquid hydrogen is mixed with liquid oxygen to form a cryogenic liquid that is burnt in Solid Rocket Boosters to power the space shuttle. Hydrogen is used to fill weather balloons because of its superb lifting power.
Recent years have shown an increasingly large need for a practical renewable energy source for such reasons as diminishing fossil fuels and increases in greenhouse gasses. Hydrogen appears to be a way out of this gasoline-dug hole, or at least, a way out in the future. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are being engineered as we speak as the technologies to refuel them cleanly are being proposed. Unfortunately, most of the technologies associated with hydrogen are still in the prototype/pre-production stages and require better enhancements before becoming mainstream. This paper assesses the practicality of hydrogen power in cars both now and in the future while explicating the actual process of how a hydrogen fuel cell works.
A good steward is the person that takes care or that protects the environment and one who follows God. A good steward can take care of cleaning the planet and recycling. Been a store it can also be a part of helping animals and making sure the population does not extinct. We learned about two alternative energies, solar-power and hydrogen fuel cells, and put them to the test by comparing them to battery power. Nowadays, when pollution from fossil fuels is growing day by day, ruining the environment, it is important to start thinking of ways around fossil fuels, like alternative energy. Nearly 784,000 U.S. homes and businesses have now gone solar, helping to save our planet fuels. Fun fact: hydrogen fuel cells were used to power spaceships into orbit, and the pure water produced by electrolysis was drank by the crew! So measuring the efficiency of these alternative energies has a real life application, as it can help us personally decide (each student) if one day in the future, we personally would start using solar panels or hydrogen fuel cells in our home. Finally, we learned quite a lot in this project, and several big ideas. Prior to this lab, I knew absolutely nothing about how hydrogen fuel cells work, about electrolysis, and its importance, but now I am a certified expert in these topics. In electrolysis, oxygen and hydrogen are separated in water, and the hydrogen fuel cell is powered by the combining of the pure hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, heat and water.In addition, I thought that alternative energy was a waste of time because of the large amount of drawbacks, but after researching the topic, alternative energy

Now, with new, innovative technology there is an opportunity to change that and to rely on renewable, cleaner sources of energy. The main source of energy for the world should be alternative energy instead of energy from fossil fuels.
