Alternative energy sources are renewable, and is most commonly referred to as free energy sources. There are many alternative energy sources such as hydro power, solar power, wind, biomass, and geothermal. Using alternative sources is more expensive in the long run, but it is the much safer option for our environment compared to fossil fuels. Although everything used is completely free, such as water and wind, the equipment used to generate these things are expensive. There are several pros and cons that come with the utilization of alternative energy sources. Alternative energy does not focus on the burning of fuel, nor the nuclear process. Alternative energy is basically an alternative to fossil fuel. Fossil fuels include coal, oil, or even natural gas. One day coal and oil will eventually run out, and the cost of these are getting more and more expensive by the day. We can reuse alternative energy, but no matter what energy sources we use, there will always be pros and cons. Hydro power is one of many examples of alternative energy source. Hydro power is producing energy by moving
Wind power is another form of solar power. Wind isn’t only a clean fuel source, but it is one of the most inexpensive e alternative sources of energy. Just as long wind continues to blow and the sun shines then wind power can produce energy to send to many different areas. There aren’t many locations that have continuous wind. And because of that the widespread development of wind power isn’t as great as it could be. Although there are more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to this energy source, the disadvantages should be taken just as seriously. Wind power can harm animals, there was a study that stated birds were coming in contact with turbines and dying. For many people the noise from the turbines is unbearable, and that’s something else that should be taken into
These include the history of windmills and their role concerning the survival in the immense plains that range from east of the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River. The rise of the economic condition of those living around the wind farms along with the surge of investments from energy companies. Finally, the promising data relating to the amount of energy produced, and the consequences they will have on the environment. In the later and longer part of the article, the possible negative results or wind farms are brought up. Primarily, the points against wind farms have to do with the conservation of wildlife. This is separated into two sections, the first addresses the dangers wind turbines present to birds, the other on the dangers presented to bats.
Not only is wind energy better than fossil fuel energy, it is also better than other new energy sources. “Wind costs are much more competitive with other generating technologies because there is no fuel to purchase and minimal operating expenses” (Wind Energy Basics 3). And as for the environmental concerns of bird population, the American Wind Energy Association said, “the modern wind turbine is far less harmful to birds than are radio towers, tall buildings, airplanes and vehicles and numerous other manmade objects. Bird deaths due to wind development will never be more than a very small fraction to those caused by other commonly accepted human activities” (Parks 58).
Compare and Contrast Nuclear Energy and Alternative Energy. Standard Number Science 3.4. Today, our society is using more energy than ever. With the increase in demand for energy, problems are presented that have to be addressed.
In chapter thirteen of our book, Environment by Raven and Berg, it shows us just how important renewable energy sources are. Currently the United States of America thrives on the use of fossil fuels and nuclear power. The main problems with these types of fuel are that they are both limited and can be extremely harmful to our environment. They cause global warming, air pollution, acid rain, and oil spills (Environment), and not only that, but in the grand scheme of things, these sources really aren’t even that cheap of a fuel source. There are many alternatives to these all but outdated fuel sources.
Wind power has an expansive future according to experts. In the 1990's wind energy was the fastest growing source of electricity in the world. However, the majority of this growth has been in Europe. This is where government policies and high conventional energy costs favor the use of wind energy. The U.S. Department of energy recently announced that it hopes to power at least 5% of the nation's electricity with wind by 2020. The department also wants to increase federal use of wind energy to 5% by 2010.
Nonrenewable resources are resources that take millions of years to replenish. In 2006, BP, the British Petroleum Company, released research indicating that there are only around 1,200 billion barrels of oil left in all of the world’s reserves (Issitt & Warhol). That means there are approximately 368 years until all of the world’s fossil fuels are used up entirely. Therefore reductions and changes need to be made; alternative energy can substitute and take place of the nonrenewable fuels. All alternative energies are renewable resources; there will always be sun, wind, water, and geothermal heat. These resources restore themselves and will never run out as opposed to fossil fuels; there won’t be any concerns about scarcity or frantic searching among energy corporations if they start investing in building alternative energy companies
...ative, renewable energy resources. Most tend to think of solar power, wind power, and hydroelectricity as the most capable alternatives to fossil fuels, yet that mindset is greatly evolving.
...otection, renewable energy sources are becoming more and more popular between western countries. Renewable energies, such as solar energy, wind energy, hydraulic power are recycle and can replace nuclear energy and fossil fuels to transfer energy to satisfy the needs of electricity. Electricity can bring convenience and efficiency to our daily lives. The lights, transportations, technologies all rely on electrical generation so that the conversion of energy is definitely essential for modern lives.
Wind energy is a current source for alternative energy. Current applications of wind energy are giant wind turbines that are placed in the country on wide open farm lands. Also Great Britain and Denmark have had off shore wind turbines since the nineteen nineties (Galbrith), this shows that wind energy not only has potential but is already proving successful. However wind energy has a long way to go before we can expect to power our world off of it. Research is being conducted to trim the costs of wind power and quadruple the amount of energy output. According to Mr. Fredette of American Superconductor, turbines are going to double in size to six megawatts (Galbrith). Which means that one turbine will soon be able to do as much work as two accomplish today. A company in Virginia conducted a study on wind power and found that if they got started on a project to make two hundred tall wind turbines that in two years they could be making twenty percent of the state’s electricity (Walker). This study shows that a significant amount of electricity could be produced from wind turbines, which in turn could go along way towards saving our planet and lowering green house gas emissions. Another positive point about wind energy is the abundance of jobs that are brought up with it. Research in Kan...
Nuclear power is considered a prominent alternative, despite the disregard it was met with in the 1970s. This is because it’s now being touted as a more environmentally beneficial solution since it emits far fewer greenhouse gases during electricity generation than coal or other traditional power plants. Nuclear energy is cost-competitive. Generating electricity in nuclear reactors is cheaper than electricity generating from oil, gas and coal, not to speak of the renewable energy sources.
Non renewable energy, such as fossil fuel, is used all over the world. Big part of the population assumes that fossil fuel is a reliable source of energy, easy to obtain, and is relatively cheap. On the other hand, fossil fuel is a non renewable energy, which means that we can use it only once. Also, this burning fossils are not good for the environment and are the main reason of the global warming. In this era a lot of new technologies have been invented. Although not every created invention has been for good, renewable sources such as, solar, wind, and human power are a good alternative of energy. Despite some people thinking that solar energy isn’t helpful and it’s only a bad investment; solar energy is the best way to reduce the greenhouse gases and decelerate the global warming, also, is a good investment and it will help you save money in a short term, and unlike the burning fossil fuel, is not harmful for human’s health.
How exactly does hydropower work, though? As it turns out, dams are the main source of harvesting energy via hydropower. There are about 80,000 dams in the United States, although not all are active producers of power. There are four main types of hydropower facilities, which all require turbines: impoundment, diversion, run-of-river, and pumped storage. Also, there are two main types of hydro turbines: impulse turbines and reaction turbines ("Hydropower…”).
Did you know that more than 2.5 million metric tons of carbon is produced by power plants annually? (Green Energy Choice). These plants are contaminating the air and making the oxygen one breaths in worse and worse. If one converted to alternative energy, they are cutting out the need to make more energy the old way and keeps less contaminates in the air. Alternative energy can be used by an electric car instead of a standard car today. By using the electric car, there would be zero emissions entering the atmosphere and hurting the environment and others around the land. Fossil fuels are eventually going to run out unlike water and solar power. There is not an endless supply of fossil fuels and thats why more people should start to convert to alternative energy. What if one day a person was running out of gas and saw that the nearest gas station had run out of fuel? One would not have this problem if they were running on an alternate energy source that never ran out. People may take fossil fuels for granted now, but will struggle when they see that they can no longer receive fuel for their car. I believe that renewable energy sources should replace fossil fuels because they are plentiful and friendly to the environment.
For solutions regarding climate change and human health, alternative energy sources would be the best. Since humans rely heavily on fossil fuels, they need to find an equal energy source that will not disrupt the atmosphere. Some examples of alternative energy sources are wind energy, solar energy, hydroelectric energy, tidal power and much more. None of these energy sources provide pollution to the Earth; however, they are expensive substitutes to build and use efficiently. Dams provide hydroelectric energy, drinking water, and flood control, but cannot be built everywhere and is also expensive to
Wind is a form of solar energy. The term wind energy describes the process by which the wind is used to generate electricity or mechanical power. Wind turbines convert mechanical energy from the wind into electrical power. Wind turbines usually have three main parts. There are blades that connect to a central hub, a box behind the blades that contains the generator, and a long stem that connects to the ground. The way how it works is that the wind turns the blades, which spins a shaft that connects to a generator making electricity. After the electricity is produced it is sent through transmission lines to a substation that is sent to business and homes. For the sake of our planet, we must promote a renewable energy economy. Wind power can be a foundation of that sustainable energy future because it provides jobs in states that are building wind turbines, is a renewable energy source, and does not damage our environment. The environment will not be damaged by the pollution, the natural resources will not be used up, and there won’t be generating of hazardous wastes. Welcoming wind energy today will lay the foundation for a healthy tomorrow that will affect everyone in the United States. There are obstacles and challenges that will make it more difficult, but the environmental impact is well worth it to invest more money into wind energy.
