The definition for public health is “the art and science dealing with the protection and improvement of community health by organised community effort and including preventive medicine and sanitary and social science” (Merriam-Webster, 2004). In simpler terms, it is a structured effort in enhancing, advertising and maintaining health standards throughout the community. Examples of public health service include monitoring and analysing current health status and promoting health. The brand’s label, ‘Stoptober’ can be interpreted as a combination of the word “Stop” and “October”. The portmanteau resembles the name of another high-profile event ‘Movember’ and would benefit from the popularity and effectively that the Movember campaign has (Siemens D.R., 2012). Other psychological approaches were also incorporated into the scheme. By limiting the campaign to just 28 days and generalising the idea of participation, Stoptober lowers smokers’ cognitive barriers to quit smoking (Fenton, 2016). SMART is another psychological principle that assists people in accomplishing laborious behavioural goals (Brown et al., 2014). SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound (Fitch & Steinke, 2011). By establishing a SMART goal, ‘Stoptober’ introduces an achievable and realistic objective to its audience (Brown et al., 2014). The ambition is explicit and was given a specific time frame (Brown et al., 2014). PRIME, which is stands for plans, responses, impulses, motives and evaluations, is the final psychological principle that Stoptober refers to (Brown et al., 2014). The hypothesis claims one’s manner of conducting oneself changes from moment to moment (Brown & West, 2013). Hence, a constant style of behaviour requires a well-balanced mental stimulus (Brown & West, 2013). In the context of ‘Stoptober’, the program focuses on the entire motivational system in supporting its participants (Brown et al., 2014). By offering an array of resources to smokers, the campaign desire to reduce the motivational forces that urges smoking (Brown et al., 2014). A support pack via post, peer support on social network and digital tools provided on an official site are all examples of the range of support the campaign offers (Public Health England,

Every year in the United States, more than 480,000 people die from tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke; consequently, making this the leading cause of preventable death in this country. People are usually introduced to smoking at a young age; mostly around the preteen years. During this critical time preteen are transitioning from middle school to high school; teens at this age find it a little harder fitting in with others all while forming their own sense of identity. Preteens only pick up the habit of smoking to cope with these challenges. What these teens do not know is that smoking at an early age only increases their chances of suffering from a lifelong addiction. To help assuage the situation the Nicotinell anti-smoking organization

2.3 Explain how the health and social care practitioner own values, beliefs and experiences can influence delivery of care.
Public health is a practice that focuses on the promotion of physical, mental, and social health and well-being and on the prevention of disease and disability among groups of people. It differs from the practice of medicine because it focuses on prevention rather than cures and addresses the needs of people as a whole rather than as individual persons. (Thivierge, Bethany, (2016).)
The term “public/community health” often brings to mind sparkling clear clean water and fresh clean air. The reason for that mental image is that both are required in order for one to have good public/community health. In actuality, the term “Public Health” has been defined as “the protection and improvement of the health of the public through community action, primarily by governmental agencies” (Public Health, 2016). However, public health includes any and all actions taken to maintain and improve the general health of a community. Government health programs provide most of the public health services. In addition, many voluntary health agencies receive contributions to battle specific diseases, such as HIV and cancer. These agencies not only provide medical services, they campaign for health legislation, and make important contributions to health education. In the United States, the Public Health Service administers the government’s public health programs. State and local health departments also provide a wide range of
Public health may be defined as “a social and political concept aimed at the improving the quality of life among the whole population through health promotion, disease prevention and other forms of health intervention”.(1) The purpose of public health practice is to improve the health of society rather than individuals and reduce health disparities between individuals, groups, and communities through organized effort of the communities, individuals and organizations. As Marmot points out: “creating a fairer society is fundamental to improving the health of the population and ensuring a fairer distribution of good health”.(2) Besides this, the public health field is expanding to tackling new and contemporary risks: obesity, sexually transmitted
Smoking tobacco in the cigarette form was extremely popular in the early part of the 20th century. Many people joined in the popular habit, got addicted, and had no fear of the future consequences or health concerns. Many people were under the impression that smoking was good for their bodies, and were unaware of the unhealthy side affects that cigarette smoking caused. Some famous people like Walt Disney, Ty Cobb, and Babe Ruth all were killed from their love of tobacco. Soon enough more and more cases of lung, throat, and mouth cancers began popping up all over the place, but people were reluctant to blame their beloved tobacco. It wasn’t until 1964 when Surgeon General Luther Terry stated that smoking causes lung cancer in people who smoke and inhale the fumes, that perceptions on smoking began to change. Since the findings of the Surgeon General, there has been an on going battle between pro-smoking, and anti-smoking groups over the rights of smokers. As the non smoking movement is growing at a rapid pace, and smoking bans have been ruled to not violate the 1st Amendment. In the last decade we have banned smoking in almost all public areas from bars and restaurants, offices, malls, and living quarters. The smoking bans are one effective way to abolish smoking, but it fails to address the major component in smoking; addiction to nicotine, and the psychological effect it has on users. Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy way to end smoking. This is because treatment plans have such a small level of success. Medical treatment such as prescription medication often have more side effects than positive effects for the user. But one product has been making huge gains in the fight to quit tobacco, and that is the electronic cigarette...
On subjects individual selected quit day the program sent a text message to participants of encouragement about remaining abstinent throughout the selected quit day. Subjects also received support to help with withdrawal symptoms as well as strategies for coping. Throughout the quit day maintenance and relapse prevention period subjects received two text messages. Participants had the option of replying back that they were doing alright and did not need further assistance and also got reminders about the number of days since they quit and encouraged them to remain abstinent. After six weeks into the program, nearly half of the subjects reported having gone through a 24-hour quit period and 22 percent had quit smoking (Obermayer, et al., 2004). The quit rate results of this study support that a behavioral smoking cessation program can be delivered via text messages.
Public health as it is implicated in the lives of the community – it is important to conceptualise what this might mean. Moreover, public health has seen as a multidiscipline perspective in which it can be defined on many levels, and I find that it could be elusive to understand its meaning. By simple understanding of public health, I refer to an approach derived by Winslow (1920) and Baggott (2000).
The improvement of health, enforcing policies, and monitoring comes from interrelationships between governmental and non-governmental entities. Since the 21st century the apparent need for an improved public health infrastructure has been a recurring topic on the state, local, and national level. In 2010 the Affordable Care Act authorized numerous clinical health reforms, a big step towards providers being accountable. {ACOs} Accountable care organizations are conducting health assessments and reporting metrics to payers. According to Magnuson and Fu, Jr., “Public health agencies must, in turn, evolve from being the only entities capable of assessing and monitoring population health to strategic and enabling partners involved in population health practice” (2014). A sense of involvement and shared work load is needed to help shift the challenges public health officials face. Public health officials promote and protect the community. With the involvement of other organizations more polices can be enforced and created to improve population
Beitsch et al. (2006) also conveys the main functions of state public health institutions, which include the assessment of diseases, policy development, and the commitment to health protection and promotion activities. While Brumback and Malecki (1996) reveal that the role of public health agencies is to assess and analyse public health problems, form policies, layout development, and implement
I have always been intrigued by the field of science and that is the reason I pursued the field of Biochemistry for my undergraduate studies. How The Human body works and the different determinants that can affect one's health or a community as a whole have always been captivating to me. I wanted to emerge in a profession that is beneficial for me, my community, and the world I live in. I came to realize through various science courses and health care experiences that a career in health care was the best path for me to outreach my community and the world.

There are numerous public health problems that can be addressed in my Southside of Chicago community. Among the several public health problems facing my Southside of Chicago community there are two that are more urgent. Health education or one might say lack thereof is a problem that needs to be addressed. My community is plagued with many of the residents suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and the killer virus known as HIV. In most cases these conditions can be prevented with healthier lifestyles and access to nutritious organic foods. In addition, environmental health is another urgent problem my community is facing. Access to clean, safe water and air is supposed to be a fundamental human right aimed at a healthy environment. Yet, my community consists a waste contaminated beach, numerous deteriorated building that are still occupied, and a countless number of restaurant and stores supplying our residents with services that are endangering their health.
