E. Status of Social Work
1. I believe social work is valued at my agency not just because the staff is nice to me, but because my supervisor follows the Code of Ethics when it comes to clients. When dealing with clients in substance abuse, some of them might think they can come in and manipulate staff because that is what they have been used to doing during their addiction. I believe one staff member used the term “devious” to describe how some clients can be when they first come to Shepherd’s Shelter.
I believe my supervisor does a good job in showing and saying to these clients that he isn’t there to be their buddy and he can tell when they are telling what they think he wants to hear. Social work is about empowering clients and showing

At my agency there are times when client’s come to receive their meds and some of the people handing out the med are recovering addicts and I just believe that a nurse would be better because not just anyone is supposed to hand out medications.
I understand my agency might not have the funds because they are a non-profit but it is something to take into consideration in the future. I only say that because there are certain agencies where not just anyone is authorized to hand out medications. There are liabilities and issues that can come from just giving that job to anyone. There was an alleged issue at my agency where it was “alleged” that a staff member allowed a client’s medication to run out on purpose and didn’t bother to get the refill called in because they didn’t like the client and wanted the kicked out.
I hope this alleged issue is not true because not only did this staff member overstep some major boundaries, but they also compromised someone’s sobriety. Also, a professional and respectful staff member wouldn’t allow their own personal issues with someone to get in the way of what they are supposed to be
The NASW Code of Ethics is the premier source of social work values, especially for students. It “is relevant to all social workers and social work students, regardless of their professional functions, the settings in which they work, or the populations they serve” (Code of Ethics - NASW, n.d.). These teachings are especially applicable in direct practice, no matter which client is being treated. Throughout the CSUB Social Work program, this worker is constantly reminded to “treat each person in a caring and respectful fashion, mindful of individual differences” (Code of Ethics - NASW,
According to Erin B. Comartin and Antonio Gonzalez-Prendes (2011), authors of the article “Dissonance Between Personal and Professional Values: Resolution of an Ethical Dilemma” the six core values of the social work profession are, “service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence” (p.1). As professionals in the field of human service, personal values of a social worker will not always be congruent with the core values of this field. As Comartin et al., (2011) suggests “social workers benefit from understanding that growth occurs when these conflicts are acknowledged, explored, and resolved” (p. 11). Having worked in the substance abuse field for nearly a year, I find that my personal values have conflicted with the core value of “dignity and worth of the person” on numerous occasions. One specific situation that I continue to struggle with the most are women who continue to abuse illicit substances despite discovering that they are pregnant. Though I have personally not had the opportunity to provide therapeutic services to a expecting mother abusing illicit substances, I have had the opportunity to observe fellow therapists manage such situations. As a counselor, if I had the opportunity to work with a mother using illicit substances during
Why might endings be difficult in working with clients? Do you think they are difficult for the client, the social worker, or both? Why?
There are several ways in which I am incorporating social work values in my human services experience and interaction with others. I make an effort to be trustworthy and not to betray confidential information. I respect the cultural differences of individuals. I interned at three different facilities with different populations ranging from mental illness, Aids and the underprivileged. I am continually striving to improve my knowledge in the field of social work through education, volunteering, and self-awareness which will benefit my future
This essay aims to explore the characteristics that make a good quality social work assessment in child care. Martin (2010) stated that there was “no single agreed definition of social work assessment.” Coulshed and Orme (2006, p24) did not offer a formal definition but they described assessment as “…a basis for planning what needs to be done to maintain, improve or bring about change in the person, the environment or both.” According to the Maclean and Harrison (2015) good assessments must be “purposeful and timely.” This is because practitioners need to be clear about why they are carrying out assessments and what it is they wish to achieve at the end of that assessment.
As a social work professional, you must take into account your own personal values before you can be an effective worker in this field. Social workers sometimes need to put their own values aside when working with clients who don’t share their same ideals. Clients are diverse and are not going to always have the same values that the worker has. Social workers need to be professional and adhere to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) guidelines when working with any client.
Even though, supervisor can often come across cool colleagues that they could be attracted to each other, so the key is to deal with it ethically and professionally. This is to promote the wellbeing of clients, colleagues and to protect social workers who are supervisor to not have to face law suits, or violations of misconducts. Also, respecting the boundaries of other colleagues makes sure the professional relationship is ethical and legal one. It should not be treated as a social circle because even minor boundary misdemeanor can give a mixed message. For instance, when in the movie the supervisor was talking to the clients like they are best friends. The supervisor was disclosing too much information to the client that the client was almost in a situation to role play therapies skills for the supervisor. I believe Social work can easily get the person to be burn out or bring into surface unresolved feelings. So, it is important to find a professional therapy to help with the social workers mental and physical health. Reasoning being is being able to release all the emotional build up in a professional therapist setting can help the social worker feel and have more balanced in their life, and would prevent getting distracted in the workplace while helping
During my first year at CSU Stanislaus, I have had the privilege of teaching three courses that expose our MSW students to, and allowed me to become familiar with, the various facets of our Department’s integrative social work practice curriculum. Below I have summarized the three coursed I taught during my first year.
The majority of society has a goal to prosper in and fulfill their dreams— which will occur on several different paths. These paths include going into the medical field, engineering, or joining the labor force. Not only do I strive to prosper in and fulfill my dreams in the long term, but, in the short span of the next four to five years I plan to achieve my BSW and MSW from Michigan State University. Once I have received both degrees, I hope to put my hopes and dreams into action. I plan to serve those who are oppressed within society, from people of color and the LGBTQ community to women and children. More specifically, I desire to perform clinical social work at a domestic violence resource facility. Along the way, I dream to pick up bits and pieces of myself, which will allow me to learn who I am and my own self worth. Without knowing our own identities, how are we ever to pursue our hopes and dreams? We couldn’t, for our hopes and dreams are our identities too.
Writing is incorporated throughout life in almost every professional career. Even jobs that don’t publicize their writing, often behind the scenes, require writing for documentation or legal reference.
With this week’s topic being values and ethics, I decided to take a more purposeful approach to identifying how social work’s ethical principles are practiced at my practicum. Service can be seen 24/7 at my practicum, since counselors are available to answer phones around the clock. The fact that all of the counselors are volunteers, even at the odd times of the day, really represents this value and putting the needs of the person on the other end of the crisis line above self-interest. The counselors also present the value of dignity and worth of a person, because we are trained to put aside judgments, to not problem solve, and to allow the caller to talk through whatever is on their mind. Throughout the call, unless it is absolutely necessary
The objective for this stage is for the social worker to show competence in transferring or terminating the case. Also, the social worker must look for relevant ethical dilemmas during the transition or termination. For the community mental health group, the final session is termination.
Social worker who provide supervision or consultation mush have knowledge of the necessary rule and skills to be supervise or consult appropriately and should do only with the area of knowledge and competence. Work field require training and experience, so social worker or the consultation have be responsible for setting clear spicily when serve client and should now about culturally sensitive boundaries . For example, when serve client from other culture, social worker should know who to commination with client and who should be setting , some client don’t like to shake hand , some they don’t like to face others .
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
Being a social worker you have to remember always to be understanding of your clients values and ethics, you never want to force your views on them. Everybody that you help is always on different paths in their lives and being a person with such power you never wish to take advantage of your client especially when they are very vulnerable and easily
