Courses Taught During my first year at CSU Stanislaus, I have had the privilege of teaching three courses that expose our MSW students to, and allowed me to become familiar with, the various facets of our Department’s integrative social work practice curriculum. Below I have summarized the three coursed I taught during my first year. 1. Foundations I: Generalist Social Work Practice using a Strengths Perspective (SW 5030 – Fall 2016). This introductory course, the first is a sequence of foundational generalist social work practices, focuses on theories of human behaviors in environmental contexts and recognizes the relevance of such understanding to practice interventions with individuals, families and client-centered groups. Current Trends in Social Work Research (SW 5025 – two sections during Spring 2017). In this research methods course, students examine the push for evidence based practice, including successes, constraints, and the debate over what constitutes evidence. Additionally, students work to uncover current methodological and analytical trends and advances in social work research and how those trends are connected to advances in social work practice. Assignments include weekly “labs” where students are introduced to and apply research analytic techniques (both quantitative and qualitative) and data collection methods (surveys and interviews) to understand and present evidence on a variety of social welfare problems; I incorporate a tripartite approach to “labs” to appeal to learner differences by providing written lab assignments instructions, in-class demonstrations, and instructional videos (that I have recorded using XXX software) students can access outside of class. In addition to “labs,” students develop and write a proposed research methodology for an original study they conceived in the previous research course, SW 5020 – Social Work Research Methods, that may be used as a launching point for those who plan to complete a thesis project. Finally, students present their research methodology papers, emphasizing how their proposed methodology aligns with the field’s push for evidence-based (or informed) practice, using the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT)

When pursuing a degree in social work, one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences within the degree aspect is the capstone project. The capstone is a multi-integrative assignment that is structure to provide social work students with the opportunity to apply their academic, professional and personal experience in the field through the application of a project. With allowing students to master the knowledge, skills, values, and ethics needed for effective social work practice, the capstone project also provide a development to really contribute in the knowledge of the profession. A social worker must have the knowledge and skills to apply to intervention strategies that can address key issues through a wide range of tools (Miley, O’Melia & Dubois 2013, p. 7). To devise an intervention plan for the case study, Miley’s (2013, p. 112) four step model is utilised.
The graduate social work course Practice-Oriented Research, prepares social workers to identify, utilize, and evaluate interventions to provide best practice for the clients. As a student of this course I applied the information to my learning circle topic, which was depressive disorders and my sub-topic of depressive disorders in elementary aged children. In this paper, I will discuss what information I learned in this course, how it impacted my perceptions, and how I will use it in the future.
Social work practitioners can use the information from this study to document activities that MSW graduates engaged in relevant to cultural competency. The study will provide current and future social workers with specific details and strategies that they can employ to assist them on their journey toward culturally competent practice. In addition, this research study will offer examples of what social workers can do to build their knowledge, skills, and values.
Research is a necessity when it comes to providing services. Social Workers need it to be able to determine their clients ' needs, to see what resources/services they have access to and if their client doesn 't have much access where can they get it. Research is also used to see how effective an intervention is and whether it would be a right fit for their clients. It provides social service agents with ways to identify problems within their clients, communities, organizations, and the government. Also it helps them to create ways to aid in effective change. It is very beneficial when a social worker needs to "assess the needs and resources of people in their environments, evaluate the effectiveness of social work services in meeting people
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of many things regarding social work. These things vary from learning how to help oneself to understanding how to help others. Not only were the textbooks very useful, but also the materials that furthered this textbook learning. The in class presentation, activities, and guest speakers gave us insight and a different perspective on the material we were learning. I feel like this course has given me a good foundation and prepared me as a future social worker (1).
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
