The graduate social work course Practice-Oriented Research, prepares social workers to identify, utilize, and evaluate interventions to provide best practice for the clients. As a student of this course I applied the information to my learning circle topic, which was depressive disorders and my sub-topic of depressive disorders in elementary aged children. In this paper, I will discuss what information I learned in this course, how it impacted my perceptions, and how I will use it in the future. I have learned an abundance of information and polished my research skills in this course. The most applicable thing I learned is considering from the following areas when determining an intervention, research evidence, practitioner expertise, service contact, and client preferences. These four aspects are easy to remember in assist in evaluating a particulate treatment intervention. I will consider the clients needs, which includes the presenting problem, home environment, treatment preferences, ethnicity, religiosity, and social supports. I will actively engage and seek new research evaluations and collaborate with my fellow social work practitioners. To accomplish this goal I will network with social work practitioners of various experience and population setting. I will continue seeking education through trainings, practitioner expertise, and organization memberships. Lastly, I will take into consideration my employment setting and the setting in which I will see clients. The intention of this written essay is to demonstrate an understanding of my views on reflection and the issues surrounding reflective practice. It is based on nursing skills that I used during my practice placement, most importantly reflecting on the professional value of privacy and dignity.

It is imperative that social workers become knowledgeable about their clients’ cultures and are culturally sensitive. In learning about their clients’ cultures, social workers need to be aware of how powerful and significant culture is in relating to clients’ behavior, values, and beliefs. Becoming culturally competent requires the ability to integrate awareness, knowledge, and skills while maintaining a positive working relationship with the client (Sue and Zane, 1987). There are many models and theories that shape the practice of social work and the ways in which professional social workers engage with their clients. Most of the models and theories that shape the practice are interchangeable and closely related or intertwined ideas but the oldest models like the Remedial Model, Reciprocal Model and the Social Goals models are the foundation for social work practice and the models and theories that govern it. In order to fully grasp the concepts of any of the resulting models and how to use any model in your practice, you as a practitioner must first master the definition and conceptional use of these models in practice.
As our society becomes more challenging, social workers help bridge the gaps for people who face extraordinary challenges in their lives. From a young age because of my compassion and empathetic nature, I knew that I wanted to work inside the human service field. I wanted to use my personal characteristics to improve individual’s lives. Social work was my calling because of the many different areas in the field that are all primarily focused on making a difference. I am interested in clinical social work, working with individuals and families. Other helping sciences like psychology offers clinical groundwork. However, I knew social work would be a better fit because of its focus and influence of persons-in environment perspective opposed to the more individualized psychological perspective.
