If you could see my childhood shark teeth collection you would understand my affinity toward teeth. Both of my parents have careers in dentistry, and this presented me with numerous hours of hand-on experience in a dental practice. I witnessed my father’s passion for helping people and found myself inspired to serve others on a greater level. Through several hours of working with models and playing sports, I learned that I had excellent dexterity and found enjoyment in aiding others with my hands. My love for science and my ability to excel in higher academics proved to me that I would succeed in a demanding work environment. Dentistry intertwines my passions, strengths, and willingness to serve others. After having the opportunity to work …show more content…
I had the pleasure to job shadow Dr. Pellegrini, an orthodontist, which was a defining moment for me as it brought my love for science into a professional career setting. For example, when the orthodontist uses a light to cure the bracket to be held in place, it reminds me that light can act as a catalyst to lower the activation energy. When seeing this I kept quiet, but inside I was filled with excitement because I finally saw my love for science be applied to help others. I bring up the importance of science because every patient that had their braces taken off was filled with emotion and adulation toward the doctor, and I know none of this is possible without a proper education. It was in this orthodontist office that I would initially decide to pursue a career in dentistry to use my hands to change …show more content…
In addition, my heart to serve will carry over into dental school. Being in my gap year, I take every opportunity to expand my knowledge of dentistry and to help others. For instance, I have become a math tutor for refugee students, help at any available free dental clinic, and attend continuing dental education classes with my father. My strong background in a dental practice, and zeal to aid those will help push me to become the best dentist I can

Out of all the careers in the world, a dental hygienist probably has one of the most interesting and flexible jobs. Not only is this career interesting and flexible, but it is also very helpful towards others and usually pays pretty well too. Many people become dental hygienists because of the easy education requirements and high demand for their jobs. These days, dental hygienists are more respected and being hired more rapidly due to the fact that more and more people are keeping and taking better care of their teeth. They also say that at the end of the day they feel accomplished in knowing that they helped improved their patient’s health, even if only in the slightest way (“Interview with a Professional”).
I plan to use my education to teach the patients about the importance of oral health and what can be done by them to improve their daily brushing habits. Also, I can go on mission trips with other doctors to help patients in need like in Africa, military. I recently signed up to volunteer at okmom program that is going to held in February 2017. It is a two-day event providing free dental clinical treatment to patients that cannot afford insurance or dental services. I am planning to help as assistant and translator at this event.
After the treatment and procedure is complete, patients leave with healthier, more beautiful teeth, giving them the confidence to ask someone out on a date or the confidence to smile on an important job interview. Dentistry is and has been for centuries, an important aspect of people’s ...
I can remember being a little boy sitting at the piano in church, listening to the preacher talk of how Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, which symbolizes the idea that we are here to serve. That message profoundly resonated with me throughout life. It was not until I began accompanying my grandmother to her multiple dental visits that I was able to see how I could put this calling of service into action. I saw firsthand the significant positive impact my grandmother’s dentist was able to make in her life, which encouraged me to want to learn about the field of dentistry. I then started researching dental health and learning of the importance of oral healthcare and how it affects the entire body. I then began to learn of how patient access to proper dental care was limited because of several factors such as, financial barriers, transportation, and dental fear, especially in the underserved minority communities. Given the shortage of black dentists, I realized I could make a positive difference by being an inspiration to those in the community, as well as serve in a professional career that would provide needed healthcare to the community. This is when I began to develop such a strong passion for
Upon enrolling at Texas State Technical College, I met some amazing professors who really inspired me to go for with my dreams of becoming a dentist. Even after expressing my fear of failure because I had a child, they assured me that I had it in me to do it. I had no idea how much work it would take to get to where wanted to be, but I knew that this was the career for me. It felt so good to finally know my purpose in life. Before actually starting my prerequisite for dental school my main motivation for going into dental school was to help people and I had a genuine interested in all the new technology. All the new advancements in technology that the dental industry as a whole had offered definitely reeled me in. I didn 't really know what I was getting myself into or how much dentistry has to offer until I actually started working as a dental assistant. There is where I learned what my purpose in dentistry was going to
As I started my new journey of becoming a dental hygienist, I came into the program with no background of dental. I came into this program with an open mind and willing to embrace new concepts as well as develop new skills. During my time at the Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene (CADH), I learned that as a dental hygienist that I am committed to promoting and helping each individual achieve their optimal oral health goals. In support of my client’s goals, I may assume any or all of the roles included in the dental hygiene scope of practice. My goal throughout this program was to help my clients achieve their optimal oral health goals through education, health promotion and providing preventive and clinical therapy.
Working in a dental office can range to be slow, flexible or busy and full of emergencies. In order to "fit" into this type of career you have to have a specific personality. Personality traits that would be suitable for a dentist is someone who is a good communicator, flexible, open minded, determined and focused. However, this might change as the 21st century grows to adapt the technology era. This becomes a debate between technology versus service. The digital revolution is transforming the medical world in multiple ways like x-rays, screenings, instruments and computers. Dental offices are now full of x-rays and computers that benefit the doctor while assisting patients. Now that everything is digital, that means all records too. Depending on the dentist, they might rely more on the computer rather than what the patient has to say; or lack interest in assuring patient comfort. As technology progresses, certain surgeries could be capable with robots or machines doing to the procedure. This will change the perspective of the proper services. That technology will be more efficient and viewed explicitly "perfect" than humans. Technology will shape the definition of service as time goes. To receive an insider point of view of what service looks like I interviewed my dental assisting teacher, Lucretia Bollinger, who worked in a dental office for 13 years then got a job opportunity to teach it.
I was inspired by the high-tech research dentistry when I read several articles about the American researches during my internship. After relocating to the States, I enjoyed learning the importance of organized dentistry and the positive impact of the dental technologies on the efficiency of a dentist and an overall patient experience, through my involvement as a dental assistant. It brings me joy, realizing that this job position has invigorated my clinical skills and significantly balanced the repertoire of my interpersonal skills. In addition, I work as a Research Technician at Houston Center for Biomaterials and Biomimetics, part of the UTH School of Dentistry complex. This opportunity semi-fulfilled my dream to work in a professional environment where my knowledge, as well as personality, bloomed
I decided to do my research report on dentistry because it is a perfect blend of science and art. It is a science in that you must fully comprehend on the different types of diagnostic and procedures you are doing. It is an art in that you are constantly working with your hands to create a beautiful smile. The impact you make on helping a person achieve an impeccable smile is not one to compare with materialistic things like money or cars. People often mistake dentist as only doing practices when in fact they could do more, like research. I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to interview Dr. Sarah Pham, DDS, a close family friend who practices dentistry in her own private office in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Pham was
Moreover in this career I am going to have the opportunity to do one of the things that I really love doing, which is helping others. This career will not only let me teach good habits for good health. But will also let me educate patients, as well as the general public, on how to achieve oral health and to prevent diseases. In fact in the dentistry career I will be able to perform an important service for everyone to help them to maintain their teeth appearance good.
After I obtained my high school diploma, I attended Health Sciences College and I accomplished intermediate university degree in the field of Dental Assistant. I have more than four years of experience in this field, which I believe provides me with a solid dental knowledge background, and fuels my initial motivation of being a dentist. I have gained a great amount of experiences by working in different health institutions such as Dentalia Clinics and Al-thager Hospital. I had a great chance to work closely on patients understanding their fears and gaining their trust, which I believe a main point in dental-patient relationship. I loved my work as a dental assistant and I did my best to help others, but my passion has not stopped there. My need to learn

I feel that my love for arts, such as painting, sketching, sewing, and playing the piano will help to make me a great dentist, as these hobbies have helped to perfect my fine motor skills. Additionally, my love for the sciences led me to join a research project where I studied the teeth of mice infected with periodontal disease. I found it inspiring to be able to concentrate on an area of academia – oral health – that is of interest to me. This research project also motivated me even more to pursue dentistry in order to help treat such a common oral health ailment such as periodontal disease. Having a relationship with patients, utilizing my creativity, and providing care to others are irrefutable goals I look to achieve in my vocation. Dentistry certainly gives me the opportunity to fulfill all of
It gives me a sense of pride to reflect back and write about my adventure, where working hard and staying focused has made me the person I am today. Until now I have seized every opportunity I could to increase my knowledge, think critically about my field, to be a better student, a responsible professional and a humble citizen. I entered dentistry when I was not really sure what I wanted to do in life. All that I was sure about was to be best in what I chose to do. Entering the dental school not only made my family proud of seeing their daughter be the first member in the extended family to be a healthcare professional but also put a big responsibility on my shoulder, which at first seemed daunting. When the sound of congratulations faded,
