Growing up I heard many stories from my peers of their experiences at the dentist’s office. It is upsetting to say that most of my visits were vividly terrifying. As a child, the grinding, scratching, and high-pitched twangs of the instruments digging around in my mouth would leave my ears ringing and teeth vibrating every single time. The smell of fluoride and disinfectants permanently infected the air, sending chills through my body the minute I walked in. I quickly learned that latex posses an extremely unappetizing aftertaste. Needless to say, I was not always enthusiastic about going to the dentist’s office and getting braces did not make anything better for me.
Starting the ninth grade with a mouth full of brackets was not at all how I envisioned starting my high school career. However, two and a half years of embarrassing school pictures, agonizing pain, and a lisp, the final product made it all worth it. I feel that my love for arts, such as painting, sketching, sewing, and playing the piano will help to make me a great dentist, as these hobbies have helped to perfect my fine motor skills. Additionally, my love for the sciences led me to join a research project where I studied the teeth of mice infected with periodontal disease. I found it inspiring to be able to concentrate on an area of academia – oral health – that is of interest to me. This research project also motivated me even more to pursue dentistry in order to help treat such a common oral health ailment such as periodontal disease. Orthodontic treatment has aided me in several ways. It helped keep my teeth looking perfect and straight. It aided me with self-discipline, and it made me a more responsible person. My mood also changed drastically, putting me in a better mood every time I smile. Most importantly, orthodontic treatment has taught me to be who I am today.
It’s been a long time since the last narrative and a lot has changed. The internship with the dental hygienist failed miserably. After three sessions, my mentor just stopped communicating and cut all ties with me. I attempted to email her multiple times but I remained unheard. So, I had to find a way to troubleshoot and look for another mentor and place to intern at.
In my experiences, I have found pinpointing a career and channeling my aspirations extremely difficult tasks. That being said, like most difficult endeavors in life, there exists extraordinary reward. Through research, soul searching, and trial and error, I realize that I aspire to make an impact in as many people’s lives as possible, while still taking care of myself and my future family. That is where dentistry comes in to play.
Dentistry as a profession over the years has evolved rapidly in light of new scientific evidence. Rapidly evolving science and technology have implemented changes within dentistry as evidenced by new standards and guidelines being produced by nationally recognised associations including National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) in Scotland, in provision of new scientific evidence. The latest standards and guidelines produced, endorse everyday clinical practice through evidence based dentistry (REF). All dental professionals as part of continued professional development are expected to keep to date on relevant guidelines and knowledge related to their practice (REF). This is supported by the General Dental Council who state all clinicians must maintain their professional knowledge and competence throughout their working career (REF).

All the various factors that lead me to dentistry amounted to just a part of my decision to become a dentist, the other half of my decision came from the simple question, “(w)ill this be a satisfying career for me?” A satisfying career, to me, is defined by whether or not I can use my career as a means to assist others and experience a sense of accomplishment and self-gratification in helping others. The notion of a satisfying career was one that came through personal experiences. Being a former Medicaid recipient, I was thankful to those that worked in the public health sector to help those in need, including myself and my family. Through my past experiences, I felt obligated to reciprocate the resources and assistance that I had received. At the end of my career, I hope to reflect back on my career and experience a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for having helped others throughout my career; this is what will amount to successful career, from my point of view.
Healthcare is a necessity to sustain society. Dentistry is an area of healthcare that I feel extremely passionate about because access to proper dental care is limited, especially in the underserved communities.
