1. How will you contribute to the mission of the National Health Service Corps in providing care to underserved communities? All the various factors that lead me to dentistry amounted to just a part of my decision to become a dentist, the other half of my decision came from the simple question, “(w)ill this be a satisfying career for me?” A satisfying career, to me, is defined by whether or not I can use my career as a means to assist others and experience a sense of accomplishment and self-gratification in helping others. The notion of a satisfying career was one that came through personal experiences. Being a former Medicaid recipient, I was thankful to those that worked in the public health sector to help those in need, including myself and my family. Through my past experiences, I felt obligated to reciprocate the resources and assistance that I had received. At the end of my career, I hope to reflect back on my career and experience a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for having helped others throughout my career; this is what will amount to successful career, from my point of view. What I am looking for in my career as a dentist is embodied in the National Health Service Corps’ (NHSC) mission to serve the community through unification between healthcare providers and patients within the community. It’s uplifting to know that the NHSC Scholarship Program exists to promote awareness about the underserved population. I believe the NHSC Scholarship Program serves as the perfect platform upon which to start my career and will steer me in the right direction in fulfilling my career goals. I look forward to making use of all the valuable tools that NHSC provides, including resources and experience, so I can learn how to best ... ... middle of paper ... ...communities, especially those that are in need and what the community needs are primary health providers. From the beginning, when I decided to pursue dentistry, my goal was to become a general dentist, the idea of specializing seemed unnecessary. However, I have a recent newfound interest in pediatric dentistry and may explore that specialty. I’ve enjoyed working with children throughout the various volunteer activities and I feel like there is a need for pediatric dentists in the underserved communities. By being a pediatric dentist as a part of the National Health Corps Scholarship Program, I would be able to provide valuable skills and resources to children and their parents, especially those with special needs and dental fears. While pediatric dentistry is a specialty I will continue to explore, the priority remains to commit my career to serving those in need.
I have more to offer to my future patients, and I believe opportunities like Nurse Corps scholarship will help me reach out to the populations who need the most care. My experience in patient care, my love to help people in need of care, my calling to reach out to communities with health disparities, and my commitment in giving back makes me an ideal candidate for this

...ealth. This was reassuring because now I know that if I do not absolutely love being a dental hygienist, there are many other roads I can go down. For the future, I plan on finishing up my prerequisites and hopefully getting in the dental program. After finishing the dental program I plan to get a job as a dental hygienist. If I love it I will keep pursuing this; however, if I do not, I will then branch off and either be a representative or even teach some sort of science. This research helped me and got me so inspired to go down the career path that I have chosen.
Out of all the careers in the world, a dental hygienist probably has one of the most interesting and flexible jobs. Not only is this career interesting and flexible, but it is also very helpful towards others and usually pays pretty well too. Many people become dental hygienists because of the easy education requirements and high demand for their jobs. These days, dental hygienists are more respected and being hired more rapidly due to the fact that more and more people are keeping and taking better care of their teeth. They also say that at the end of the day they feel accomplished in knowing that they helped improved their patient’s health, even if only in the slightest way (“Interview with a Professional”).
I am fortunate that my experiences have made me aware of these things so that when I do return to these communities as a dentist, I can not only better serve my patients as a provider, but I can also be a leading advocate for the change that is so desperately needed by the individuals in these communities. As I continue along my career path in dentistry, I intend to keep volunteering in dental clinics in underserved communities as well as participating in formal organizations such as Saving Smiles to more effectively address these issues as well as enhance my understanding of the dental field. Perhaps while I serve in these communities, I can inspire and support future health professionals that will continue to advance the incredible changes that our health fields are currently
Nursing Corps scholarship program mission is to provide qualified and dedicated nurses to provide amazing care to patients in underserved communities. It will be an honor for me to serve and provide quality care to patients when I graduate from nursing school and pass the board exam.
Pediatric Dentistry is a superb fit for me since I enjoy working with children. Dentists diagnose and treat problems with patients’ teeth, gums, and related parts
In my experiences, I have found pinpointing a career and channeling my aspirations extremely difficult tasks. That being said, like most difficult endeavors in life, there exists extraordinary reward. Through research, soul searching, and trial and error, I realize that I aspire to make an impact in as many people’s lives as possible, while still taking care of myself and my future family. That is where dentistry comes in to play.
I spent an early part of my life in a developing country called Bangladesh which was a stark contrast to my life in the United States. Despite living in the capital city of Dhaka, which has a busy urban landscape, what always struck me was the sad state of the people struggling with poverty. There were malnourished children and individuals suffering from diseases on the streets. These memories have stuck with me and inspired me to go into a profession that provides service to people in need. People in my family have a diverse range of profession, but my dentist aunt who has done extensive volunteer work through her profession has always been a great role model for me. Last year, my aunt went on a dental service trip to Ecuador and provided free dental care to people who don’t have access to proper healthcare. These
Becoming more involved with my community has helped me persevere through my unexpected hardships and regain my focus, which in turn has molded me into a better human being and future physician. As I explored ways to become a better activist, I have volunteered more in my community. My experience with the Boys and Girls club has allowed me to interact with young children of low socioeconomic status like I once was. The time spent volunteering has further spurred my interest towards those that are consistently underrepresented and underserved. These opportunities have cultivated an impeccable drive towards becoming a physician that cares and understands where people are coming from with economical and emotional insecurities. This experience has served as an additional spark that ignited the flame within me to pursue a career as a
I am the prime example for a student that strives for excellence in everything that I do. When I first entered High School my ninth grade year I was in honors classes doing very good until I was distracted. I let other students bring me down to their level and I started slacking in my grades and not caring about anything. When school let out that summer my mother sent me to Greensboro, N.C to stay with my god-sister for the summer so I could act right and get my head back in the books. My god sister and I had a talk about my actions and what I needed to do to improve them. I told her that I was going into my sophomore year of school focused and leaving the crowd behind because I eventually got tired of letting my family down. My tenth grade
The time that I do not spend at the office or clinic, I am spending it with my two daughters. The oldest is getting ready for second grade and the youngest for Pre-K. I work full-time and any second, I can get with them is worth it. They teach me how to be a better person and mother. My family is my priority and I know they support any decision I make with my career. We spend most of our time learning how to read and write. They attend a private school in Moore so they get the best education we possibly can give them. They love seeing new things and making projects with my vinyl machine. Dentistry has been my life for the last 10 years. Thank you for your
Choosing a particular profession is one of the most important decisions that we take in our life. .In my opinion, I would like to focus on a career that is enjoyable, productive, creative and simultaneously allows you to work for the betterment of humanity. According to me, one of the most productive and fulfilling career that provides you various opportunities to help and promote humanity is that of a dentist. Dentistry gains magnificent attention in last some decades and so a huge percentage of people around the world and from US are devoting their life to this noble profession. Becoming a dentist requires a lot of hard work dedication but the factor that motivates you to face these difficulties is the actual pleasure gained when you are able to change someone’s life by creating a beautiful and healthy smile for them and the joy of which could not be expressed.
I always wanted to be a dentist, but as I advanced in my education, I noticed the injustices in healthcare surrounding me, I realized that I want to dedicate myself to more than just simple office visits, but rather to make an impact in my field and the lives of those around me and I truly believe public health is the greatest tool that enables me to make that impact I desire.
This directed me towards taking one of the most important decisions of my life of coming to the United States to pursue Masters of Public Health (MPH) and learn from the pioneers who have successfully integrated it in the society with positive results. I wanted to apply my knowledge beyond the borders of dental hygiene education and learn sophisticated methods to address the co-morbidities and healthcare access inequalities, as I have seen in a lot of my patients. My interest in mathematics compelled me to choose Epidemiology major and learn statistical software to study disease burden, distribution and trends. I volunteered in George Washington University (GWU) ISCOPES- Adult health literacy team, where we attended Emory transitional house and educated people about various health topics including oral health. During my MPH, I did my practicum at Washington DC, Department of Health on “Analysis of utilization of dental home linkage and preventive dental services among DC Medicaid children less than 3years of age for calendar year 2014” using Statistical Analysis System software (SAS). This project gave me an insight about the Current Dental Terminology codes and the trends in service utilization in a subset of the U.S. population. I was graciously honored with Practicum Research Fellowship Award by my school for my
