Monet – Impression, Sunrise; van Gogh – The Starry Night; Matisse – Le Bonheur de Vivre Monet’s painting, Impression, Sunrise, is an Impressionist painting of what looks to be a two people in a rowboat enjoying a beautiful sunset. Monet painted this picture in a more abstract way with his use of varying brushstrokes, which gave a blurred appearance, and also by not completely blending the colors of the sunset and the water. This type of quick and varying brushstroke is typical of Impressionist paintings. This allows for the audience to see all of the individual elements and colors broken up. He used sarcasm to convey his feelings towards society and its changing standards. He would poke fun at the modern way of living and how materialistic of a society this world has become. This style of art that took inspiration from popular culture through the newspaper, advertisements, and television is called Pop art. Hamilton was one of the most influential artists in Pop culture. His collage, Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?, is a piece of Pop art that is full of social satire. There are many different elements, it being a collage, of modern society that Hamilton pokes fun at. The two most obvious are the practically nude man and woman, and the woman with the vacuum cleaner in the background. The nearly naked man and woman represent the sex-crazed world we live in. They are both very exposed, yet at the same time, they are trying to cover up. This could be representing the mixed signals people are given by society – it’s okay to be naked because sex sells, but you must also be modest at the same time. This is especially true for the woman. The joke that Hamilton was getting at with the ridiculously long handle on the vacuum cleaner coinciding with the advertisement, was that we are never satisfied with what we have and we always want more.
