In 1962, at 11:00:09 pm local time on July 8th, the United States detonated a thermonuclear warhead riding atop a Thor missile at 400 km above Johnston Island at a distance of 826 miles from Honolulu, Hawaii. That night was one that many on the Hawaii Islands would never forget (Berkhouse, 1962). Operation , as the test was code named by the U.S. military, caused the first damage in the United States from an electromagnetic pulse created by a nuclear detonation. Though the damage was not intended or planned, the 1.4-megaton weapon caused “the failure of street-lighting systems, tripping of circuit breakers, triggering of burglar alarms, and damage to a telecommunications relay facility.” (EMP Commission, 2004, p. 4)
Earth's oceans make up over 75% of the Earth as a whole. With that being said, it is vital to understand the significance on the contents of the oceans. Since fish and marine products make up a large portion of our diet, fishing practices need to be properly managed. In this essay, overfishing will be defined, its consequences will be revealed, and plans for proper fish distribution will be executed.
“A human being is not attaining his full heights until he is educated” this anecdote written by Horace Mann, explains the significance education has in today’s society. In order to acquire a career and be successful, individuals need to be educated. Global competition for jobs is very common in today’s century, individuals are not only competing with local people, but also people worldwide. The prerequisites for jobs keep changing through time and the demands for jobs also keep increasing. It is the responsibility of the schools to motivate and retain its students on *the journey of acquiring an education in order to prepare them for future responsibilities. Universities, Community Colleges, along with High Schools are the main source of motivation for students to continue pursuing their career goals and retaining students in school. Furthermore, the importance for an education is immense, it shapes who you are as an individual and can gradually be a door opener to great opportunities in the future. Education is a human right in America, and should be taken advantage of when it is available. Unfortunately, other individuals in different countries are not blessed with this opportunity, due to their financial status, lifestyle, health etc. Therefore, it is very important to maintain the retention rate, which is the amount of students attending College to acquire their education. Although, there are various numbers of reasons that may prohibit retention rates from increasing, which induce the rise on drop out rates and prohibit students from attending school, it is the school’s responsibility to encourage the continuation of acquiring an education. The reason for Skyline College’s retention rate remaining constant is caused by variou...
The desire to expand and improve existing resources is not a new phenomenon within higher education, (Hossler, 2004) but is one that has begun to gain attention as institutions increasingly adopt enrollment management (EM) practices. EM is both an organizational concept merged with associated practices that help institutions exercise control over the characteristics of their student bodies (Hossler & Bean, 1990; Hossler, 2004; Kraatz, Ventresca, & Deng, 2010). EM is a controversial trend with varying definitions, values, and drawbacks.
Presents the results of a study on the effectiveness of computer-based integrated learning system (ILS) in schools in the United States. Subjects in which ILS is used; ILS' ability to track students' progress on learning activities; ILS' effectiveness in improving student learning; Underutilization of ILS in American schools; Potential of ILS to transform the classroom.
One of the major advantages of an online degree program is the flexibility it provides to someone working a demanding job, living geographically removed from a college campus, or that simply finds it most convenient for a host of other reasons. These challenges of the modern workforce have in fact been the big driver behind the exponential rise in online degree programs over the past decade. Furthermore, the flexibility provided by an online degree program enables tailoring a program matched to personal learning style and pace.
Our client is the Arizona Wildcat Academic Center (abbreviate that by calling it C.A.T.S. Academics in the rest of report). The normal goal of C.A.T.S Academics is help student-athletes graduate and there are more than 500 student-athletes belong C.A.T.S Academics. Therefore, the department provides these students a good place to study and offer all possible academic supports and resources, such as tutoring services, to student athletes. This October, the department moved to a bigger building with more various purpose rooms and then want to hire more amounts of high-quality workers. They intend to specify the correct purpose of each room in this new building. In addition, they want to track Tutors, for examples, keeping records whether the tutor attends the tutoring appointments or not and the total number of working hours. Considered these new demands, they want to setup a new online booking & scheduling system. The mission of our team is to help C.A.T.S. Academics create a database system and front-end booking & scheduling procedure.
Technologies used in training and education are a popular topic of discussion all over the world. Two major views on delivery modes of educational content exist: some focus on asynchronous delivery for the accessibility of information anytime and anywhere through the use of collaborative tools while whereas others focus on the real-time interaction with the instructor, students, and content during class through synchronous delivery. This comparative analysis will look at Elluminate, a synchronous application, and compare it to Sakai, an asynchronous application. The comparative analysis will further examine general aspects, technological components, pedagogical concepts, strengths and limitations of systems that affect students and instructors for both technologies. This analysis would be helpful to a student who wants to learn how to explore web-based technologies and compare systems.

Self-awareness is a psychological state in which people are aware of their traits, feelings and behavior. Alternately, it can be defined as the realization of oneself as an individual entity."
Given the increasing fiscal constraints of many post-secondary institutions, there is a great need to not only increase enrollment, but retain the students that matriculate. Attrition rates in the United States for first year college students is reported to be between 30 and 50 percent; furthermore, attrition rates directly correlate to lost revenue (O’Keefe, 2013). Barbatis (2010, p.16), noted that locally, “college administrators perceive student retention rates as indicators which measure the quality of faculty instruction, support services, and student success. Statewide, subsidies have been paid to institutions to help fund the education of students who left after one year (O’Keefe, 2013). Not only are the effects of attrition felt at the local and
The issue of student persistence and retention has garnered significant attention among institutions of higher education as they look at ways to increase student graduation rates and revenue. Freshman retention rates in the Midwest range from 89% to 55% (US News and World Reports, 2012). UIC’s first year retention rate hovers around 80%, but only about 50% of any cohort actually makes it to graduation (UIC Office of Degree Programs, 2009).
The number of students unable to finish their college degree have been soaring high that according to statistics, the following reasons are the main cause why they’re not able to do so: lack of connection between students, fellow students and professors, unpreparedness in taking placement exams, blurry pathways for students and unfamiliarity of campus resources that should have been used.
The concept of Student Information Management System (SIMS) is one that continues to elicit mixed reactions. Its application appears limited by a number of factors. Whitley, Gal, and Kjaergaard (2014) connotes that SIMS faces challenges in acceptability due to the kind of information being stored, personal identification information being stored in the system and the identity of people accessing this information. Ngoma (2009) explores the level of success student information system, a subset of SIMS. Findings from Ngoma’s expedition indicate that many institutions tend to have a negative attitude towards implementation of such projects. Their evaluation mechanism on application of this technology is tied to the level of improvement of the institution especially student performance (Sun & Benton 2008; Chong 2014).
