My first observation took place on Friday, October 9, 2015 at a Starbucks located in San Marcos. It was 4:05 PM when two men got their drinks and sat down on a table to my left. They both were having on a conversation where I immediately noticed laughter and joy. Both men smiled as they spoke to each other and it seemed as if they were both having a good time. My first assumption was that they were businessmen based on the professional attire that they were wearing. They were well groomed, each wearing a suit, and carrying a leather suit case. Person A looked the youngest, was about 6’2, and between 30-35 years of age. He was white, had his blond hair combed to the side, had no facial hair, had a muscular physique, wore a black suite, and a …show more content…
Their professional attire and suitcases lead me to think that. However, I also noticed that both men got along pretty well, remained respectful and attentive at all times, and seemed to be good friends. Their respectful behavior is an example of a symbolic act that Bailey’s article mentioned. This natural act of respect is achieved unconsciously based on their frequent interaction that a person has with each other and awareness of what is appropriate when interaction with that particular person. As Bailey states, it is applied “through manipulation of variety of communicative channels including prosody, choice of words and topic, proxemic distance and timing of utterances” (p.115). In addition, I was also able to observe that their body behavior was not of what it is expected of two professionals. You would normally expect these them to show no emotions, speak slowly, use complicated business related vocabulary, and limited body movement. However, we know these men weren't at work during that time, making it understandable for them to behave “normal” and being open with each other. Based on their behavior and body movements, I came to the conclusion that they were good friends. They would constantly smile and laugh together during their conversation. What surprised me the most was when I heard person A call person B “brotha”. That got me off guard since my assumptions about them were different. When …show more content…
This particular classroom is held in a lecture hall with a total of 250 students. I decided to do my last two observations in this classroom due to the diverse range of scenarios that the classroom setting has to offer. Both observations were conducted 10 minutes before class and both pairs of people whom I observed were seated in front of
For my report, I observed the customers at a Starbucks in downtown St. Petersburg. Each time I visited this establishment, there were consistent factors as well as unique ones during each observation. The morning crowd of people was vastly different than the evening crowd. I did however see many parallels with the morning and lunch time crowd. Each time I visited, There seemed to be an upbeat and fast paced environment.
Many people start his or her day with a cup of coffee. Coffee franchisees are growing around the world with coffee being one of the most popular drinks. A Colombia franchisee Juan Valdez is a growing franchisee in the United States specializing in coffee.
He told me the story rather quickly, but in an uncharacteristically serious tone, and maintained eye contact during the performance. The story he told is not really very long or involved with characters and exact places, but I interpret that as an element that makes the story more likely to circulate, since the lack of specificity implies it could happen to anyone, anywhere. Normally, this individual cannot say a single sentence without laughing, joking, or including some kind of sarcasm, but his tone while he quickly reviewed this ...
Behaving in the same way, they spent as much time as possible together. This time passed quickly, whilst the time spent apart was slow and seemed pointless.
To me, this story just goes to show how just because someone looks a certain way on the surface, we cannot assume we understand the situation, and should not deduce anything until we know the full story. That said, it is oftentimes not possible to further understand someone’s story. This is because it might just be a short-lived encounter or even someone we merely see from afar. If this is the case, I feel that it is in my best interest to try and see the situation from another angle, and try to get a picture of what is going on with them. Who am I to judge someone, when there are so many unknown components to their
When people are greeted coldly, they usually get offended, particularly when the greeting comes from someone close to you. In the story, Mr. Barting was close with Mr. Conway, they had a deal with each other wherein whoever died first, they would try to communicate with the other from beyond the grave. Mr. Conway told this story to Mr. Foley and after a few weeks he saw Mr. Conway walking down the street and tried to say hello but Mr. Conway only nodded and walked on. The next day when Mr. Conway was questioned about this greeting, he said that he greeted Mr. Foley the same way that Mr. Barting greeted him the day before and only fifteen minutes before Mr. Foley had questioned Mr. Conway.
But after meeting, they both came to realize that you never know the reasons behind the actions of some people.
Preliminary Starbucks – one of the fastest growing companies in the US and in the world - has built its position on the market by connecting with its customers, and creating a “third place” beside home and work, where people can relax and enjoy themselves. It was the motto of Starbucks’ owner Howard Schultz and, mostly thanks to his philosophy, the company has become the biggest coffee drink retailer in the world. However, within the new customer satisfaction report, there are shown some concerns, that the company has lost the connection with customers and it must be taken some steps to help Starbucks to go back on the right path regarding customer satisfaction. I will briefly summarize and examine issues facing Starbucks. Starting from there, I will pick the most important issue and study it from different positions.
They were Caucasian and looked to be in their 40’s. They were dressed in jeans and sweaters. The male had his arm around the female. They sat there talking and relaxing. They seemed to be in a happy mood. The female place her hand on the male’s thigh. She tapped his thigh several times. Eventually, they got up. The male picked up all of their shopping bags. They began walking away and the male put his arm around the female once more. She then leaned into him as they walked into JC Penney’s. They were quite sweet and followed all of the rules of socially acceptable
They both worked at Wendy’s and they always has had a thing for each other. Mark and Lisa worked in the back of Wendy’s where you grill the burgers and make the burgers. They would always talk to each other and made each other laugh all the time. Lisa loved talking to Mark and so did Mark.
The coffee shop I decided to do my observation was the well known Starbucks just a couple blocks away. The reason I chose this coffee shop was because of it 's style inside, it attracted me. For example, one side of the wall has a glass top, and the lower part of the wall, made of wood and painted in a bright red color, which was one thing that attracted me and stood out. Outside of the shop people can actually see through the glass wall and get to see what’s happening inside of the coffeeshop. By the entrance you see these two red ceiling lamps which were shaped in a flower bud and these two tall green plants. Once you were in, on the right of the shop there was a counter with food and things to put in your drinks such as milk, sugar, chocolate, etc and the colors and how the food was displayed and served was appealing to my eyes. Behind that counter there was a long table with different electronic devices plugged into the wall. On the middle of the those there is a fridge just for ice and when I turned to the other side and I noticed a big menu on the wall. Further more into the shop, there was an area filled with tables, chairs, and sofas. The tables were in different shapes, one was round and the others rectangular, also there was four bamboo baskets and I looked around and noticed that the walls in that area were decorated with paintings.
