Starbucks Coffee Shop When you walk in a Starbucks coffee shop the amazing aroma of coffee beans being brewed creates a smell so wonderful you can almost taste your favorite coffee or espresso drink; even before you have the drink in your hand. The sound of steaming milk and blenders full of Frapachinoes echoes through the air. Five people in green aprons wearing black or white collared shirts working swiftly, to ensure the quickest best service as possible. The two Baristas at the cash registers would call out the drinks to the two people at the bar. One employee doing odd jobs call expediting. A tall, slender dark haired man wearing a black suit possibly Armoni or Gucci, carrying a briefcase approaches register one. A trendy mom with a 5 year old wearing black capri pants, white blouse, and designer sunglasses orders Grande, non-fat, extra hot, one equal late at register two. The floor is so clean you could even eat off of it. The jazzy interior screams to be that of an Italian café. When I arrived in Italy in May 1998, my first order of business was to sample some Italian coffee. Being an avid coffee drinker, and having heard that Italians brew the best in the world, I was quite eager to find a little bar that would cheerfully quench my craving. I was not disappointed. The cappuccino that I sipped that day was a two-layer affair, a mountain of rich foamy milk atop a modest amount of strong, hot espresso.

The friendly staff also contributes to the pleasant environment. All of the capable baristas are introduced on the restaurant’s website, with short and sweet bios about them all. This creates a close-knit family, all with a love for quality coffee. This familiarity encourages loyalty to the coffee shop. The full wall of windows provides a view of Bedford Street and again stresses that the products should be enjoyed in the morning. On a sunny morning, the light fills the cafe and illuminates the mural, a focal point. The artistic, wispy design disguises a boring brick wall as a magnificent work of art. The cozy and intimate setting encourages the consumer to return to enjoy the food and people that they love.
Fish’s depiction of the process of buying a coffee now is an unfair stereotype, as not everyone has experienced what he describes. For example Fish states, “if you are patient and stay in line (no bathroom breaks), you get to put in your order,” (Fish). The bathroom comment was quite unnecessary because nobody gets bathroom breaks for long lines. This quote by Fish was illogical for his argument. Fish continues, stating that when one receives a coffee, the “real problem” is how the coffee accessories are placed. There are too many of them, Fish believes, and the order is random. This is not true for most coffee shops. Typically in coffee shops, the dairy is together, the sugars are neatly piled, the straws and napkins are stacked tidily. Of course, there are coffee shops now that are how Fish described. However, he only describes a percentage of coffee shops, not all of them. Fish should have made that clear in his argument. To continue, Fish writes about people fighting over the accessories and balancing coffee in one hand. This comment is almost theatrical in its description. The scene Fish depicts is rarely seen at coffee shops. Fish’s argument does not represent a realistic representation of all coffee shops. Fish does not state this, therefore being unreliable in his
My heart was thumping wildly, “What if I mess up?”, “What if I ask the wrong questions?” “What if I get them mixed up?” I was just before panicking. I arrived at the coffee shop where Mrs. Cleantech and I agreed to get together. We decided to meet at 3:00 to avoid the large lunch and supper crowds. What timing! We met at the front door! I asked the hostess if we could have some privacy. She was accommodating and guided us to a small table in the rear corner of the room. My confidence was rising, I think I was appropriately dressed! I was wearing my black slacks with a light green jacket. Mrs. Joe Cleantech was wearing simple clothes; brown slacks and a yellow sweater. We shook hands, introduced ourselves and sat down.
In Ray Oldenburg’s piece The Problems of Place in America, he concludes that communities lack the “third place”, which is a public space in communities outside the home and workplace that serve as a common ground. Oldenburg defines the third place as “a generic designation for a great variety of public places that host the regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gatherings of individuals beyond the realms of home and work.” (51) Coffee shops fall under this description of the third place because they attract people of all ages for various reasons; this includes serving as a place to meet up with friends and family, do homework, and regularly host events like poetry slams and live band performances.
Secondly, the older waiter understands that a clean, well-lit café could be a much-needed refuge for someone seeking to escape their problems. He understands that there really is no better place than in an orderly, bright and pleasant café to do so. He knows too, that he is one such person, saying that he is, “with those who like to stay late at the café…with all those who do not want to go to bed...with all those who need a light for the night” (Hemingway 155). Starbucks is a company in which purchases and roasts high quality whole bean coffees and sells them along with fresh, rich-brewed, Italian style espresso beverages, a variety of pastries and confections, and coffee-related accessories and equipment (starbucks.com). During my environmental scan in which took place at the Starbucks on the corner of Fair and Newport across the street from vanguard, I noticed many things in which where never brought to my attention in prior stays and visits at Starbucks; such as the many social groups in which choose to have their meetings at Starbucks. Thus in this essay we will discuss things in which many people do not really notice when going to Starbucks.
Preliminary Starbucks – one of the fastest growing companies in the US and in the world - has built its position on the market by connecting with its customers, and creating a “third place” beside home and work, where people can relax and enjoy themselves. It was the motto of Starbucks’ owner Howard Schultz and, mostly thanks to his philosophy, the company has become the biggest coffee drink retailer in the world. However, within the new customer satisfaction report, there are shown some concerns, that the company has lost the connection with customers and it must be taken some steps to help Starbucks to go back on the right path regarding customer satisfaction. Through its dynamic market expansion, new products and special promotional strategies, it has succeeded in making a name for itself in the minds of the target customers. However, McDonald’s earnings has declined in the late 1990’s and 2000s. This is mainly due to a fiercely competitive industry and variety in customer tastes and preferences.
I can group the skills and activities that I experienced into the two categories of: customer service, and non-customer service. Customer service is the number one priority at South Georgia Banking, because they put their customers first. The banking industry is highly competitive and keeping customers, along with attracting them is essential. Bank employees need to listen and understand the wants and needs of their customers. However, a great bank employee should be able to interpret the customer’s intentions, and provide them with clear and sound banking advice. I worked in the Teller and Customer Service departments during my internship, and they both require employees to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and computer knowledgeable.
Restaurants and other eateries are ubiquitous in American society. However, the workplace routines and behaviors of individuals who perform the critical functions of preparing, serving, and cleaning up meals are often invisible to diners. This divide is particularly palpable in collegiate, corporate, or other fast paced settings where diners enter with the expectation of expediency and convenience. For my ethnography, I chose to observe and illuminate the interactions between food service workers at a deli-like restaurant located in the psychology building on the campus of Boston University. The coffee shop I decided to do my observation was the well known Starbucks just a couple blocks away. The reason I chose this coffee shop was because of it 's style inside, it attracted me. For example, one side of the wall has a glass top, and the lower part of the wall, made of wood and painted in a bright red color, which was one thing that attracted me and stood out. Outside of the shop people can actually see through the glass wall and get to see what’s happening inside of the coffeeshop. By the entrance you see these two red ceiling lamps which were shaped in a flower bud and these two tall green plants. Once you were in, on the right of the shop there was a counter with food and things to put in your drinks such as milk, sugar, chocolate, etc and the colors and how the food was displayed and served was appealing to my eyes. Behind that counter there was a long table with different electronic devices plugged into the wall. On the middle of the those there is a fridge just for ice and when I turned to the other side and I noticed a big menu on the wall. Further more into the shop, there was an area filled with tables, chairs, and sofas. The tables were in different shapes, one was round and the others rectangular, also there was four bamboo baskets and I looked around and noticed that the walls in that area were decorated with paintings.
