Stages Of Group Development
Group development is broken down into five stages. These stages are forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. The following is a description of how our group passed through each of these stages.
Forming
In the first stage our group was formed. Each member of our group introduced themselves. We basically made small talk in an effort to relieve some of the initial awkwardness. We discussed our expectations of the project; we then talked about when and where our meeting would be. We had to figure out when all of the group members were available and to find a convenient place to meet that was accessible by all members.
Storming
In the storming stage our group members began to take on specific roles. Mandy and Cory seemed equally capable of taking on the leadership role. As we each tried to establish our own identity within the group, we found out what was expected of us from other members. We didn’t have an official leader, but if one person had to be named I’m sure all of the group would agree on Mandy.
Norming
During this stage are we pooled our individual thoughts and expectations together. We discovered that we were all in agreement on how the project should be executed. Discussions concerning the project went smoothly after this point and more progress was made. In this stage I discovered that I had a higher degree of cohesiveness with Mandy than with other group members. This could be due to the fact that Mandy and I were the only female members in the group. It could also be due to the fact that Mandy was the group “leader” and I looked to her for information on group meetings.
Performing
In this stage our group shifted from discussing and establishing objectives to actually taking the actions necessary to accomplish them. We finished our surveys and began to pass them out to be completed. Each member of our group was responsible to carry out the task effectively and within the designated time limit.
We all have had individual ideas that we used to support each one of us. We proceeded with the project with an open mind and made every effort to go according to what was discussed before embarking on the task. It could be said that the reason we were successful was that we followed all the sequences as discussed, especially the last one. It was apparent that we were all committed to the success of the team, we were able to motivate each other by engaging all the team members to aim to achieve at the highest level. According to Halter (2014), all groups go through three phases of development which includes the orientation (introductory) phase, working phase and termination phase. As facilitators, we used motivational interviewing skills such as open-ended questions so that participants could engage in the discussion and share their experiences. Reflective listening and summary were used to recap some of the points discussed by the participants after each question. The group plan was very helpful in helping us keep up with the time.
Tuckman reviewed, in 1965, 50 articles that were dealing by the time with stages in development of groups. Accordingly, I was able to gain insight on how to plan activities tailored to the needs of the group as well as obtain tips on conducting groups effectively. Additionally, I was able to get a sense of the group dynamics, attain knowledge on the stages of a group through observing all the individuals belonging to the group, their uniqueness and how their personality impacted the group itself. Individuals were able to join the group at different stages hence; the forming stage was repeated each time a new member was recruited. Forming-The forming stage is where every member of the team are depending on a leaders guidance. The responsibilities of every member in the team are unclear.
After completing the group task of preparing a presentation on, transferring individual facilitation skills into a group work setting I will critically reflect upon my own participation. I will evaluate my self-awareness while working in the group, as well as those around me. The way that I personally dealt with any issues that arose within the group and how that affected the group dynamics. I will also briefly discuss the roles in which each member of the group took and how role allocation affected, the group dynamics and the working relationships. Finally I will evaluate my work having discussed it with my fellow group members.

The team needs to focus on its goals to avoid being distracted from relationships and emotional issues. If they want to progress they have to find a solutions as it is needed.
The first stage in developing a team as it relates to group dynamics is forming, this is the stage where team members come together and they question what they are therefore, who else is a part of the team, who they are comfortable with, and this enables them to get involved as well as allowing the team the opportunity to introduce themselves to each other. The second stage is storming, and in this stage the team members begin to voice their opinions and differences as well as align themselves with others who share their same beliefs. This is an important stage for the team because team members will begin to become more involved with one another, and when they voice their concerns, they can feel like they are being represented and understood. The third stage is norming in the stage team members begin to establish a shared common commitment to the purpose of why the team is there, where they can establish their overall goals and how the goals are going to be achieved. In the fourth stage, known as performing, the team works effectively and efficiently to gather towards achieving the goal.
All the team members were well aware of their individual roles and their team’s role. As our team was multi-cultural, some arguments were already expected. GROUP STAGES Our group is composed of six students which were made in the first week itself, with a few additions and subtractions in the next week. By the second week our group was formed and proceeded to a second stage known as Storming (Tuckman, 1965).
