A tireless understudy, educator, and scholar, St. Thomas Aquinas was the best Christian scholar of the Medieval times. He was from Roccasecca, Italy, child of Check Landolfo of Aquino and Royal lady Teodora of Teano. “At the age of five the Court of Aquino determined to send him to be brought up in the celebrated Benedictine Monastery of Monte Cassino, among the noble youths who were educated there; so that while he learned all things necessary for his future life in the world, he could at the same time advance in the love and fear of God.” From that point, he happened to study at the College of Naples and, over the protests of his family, turned into a Dominican monk in 1244. After further study and educating at the College of Paris, he came back to Italy in 1259 and put in almost ten years presenting and working at Dominican religious communities by Rome.

His most far reaching work is the Summa Theologica, which he presumably composed somewhere around 1265 and 1272 however left unfinished. “Although unfinished, the Summa is one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature." His Summa contra Gentiles “was probably written to aid missionaries in explaining the Christian religion to and defending it against the Muslims and Jews, both of which, especially the former, had a strong Aristotelian philosophical tradition at the time.” Apart from these two most popular ones, Aquinas likewise composed critiques on various treatises by Aristotle; different Scripture discourses; records of philosophical and theology questions; and miscellaneous treatises, letters, and notes. When Thomas was five, his mother and father send him to the famous Abbe of Monte Cassino. At the abbey he became interested in the writings of Aristotle and the great Islamic philosopher Averroes of Cordoba. In time, Thomas decided that he wanted to join the Dominicans, but his parents wanted him to join the Benedictines. When Thomas joined the Dominicans, his outraged parents sent his brothers to capture him and bring him home. Once they had taken Thomas, they locked him in the castle of Monte San Giovanni. Francis of Assisi is one of the most influential personalities in the entire world. In the book ‘Francis of Assisi: Performing the Gospel Life,’ Cunningham recounts the life of this humble monk who lived in the medieval times, and shaped the Christian life, which spread in Western culture throughout the rest of history. I believe Cunningham accurately accounts for the life of Francis of Assisi, and in doing so; he provides a trajectory of the Christian faith from its early and historical proponents through its fusion with western culture, and its subsequent spread throughout the world.
Aquinas’ third way argument states that there has to be something that must exist, which is most likely God. He starts his argument by saying not everything must exist, because things are born and die every single day. By stating this we can jump to the conclusion that if everything need not exist then there would have been a time where there was nothing. But, he goes on, if there was a time when there was nothing, then nothing would exist even today, because something cannot come from nothing. However, our observations tell us that something does exist, therefore there is something that must exist, and Aquinas says that something is God.

Summa Theologica and Sic et Non, to this day, are controversial ways man has looked for reason in finding the truth about God and the divine order of life. The views on the "natural world" were challenged without challenging the Christian faith, while being followers of the Christian faith.
St. Francis of Assisi was born in Umbria in the year 1182. He was a child every father hoped for, he was filled with life, a determined and courageous individual. He was gifted with rather good looks, qualities that attracted friends and a gift of leadership. His father was an extremely wealthy merchant in Assisi. But this son, his favourite, was the one who broke Peter Bernardone’s heart. The boy turned on his father, and in a vicious event that eventually resulted into a public scene. St. Francis of Assisi stepped away from his father, his business and left his father in a state of immense emotional suffering.

It has been written that "since the day of Aristotle, probably no one man has exercised such a powerful influence on the thinking world as did St Thomas Aquinas." Thomas Aquinas was born in 1225 in Italy of a noble family, thus separated by 900 years to Aristotle. He received his first education at the Abbey of Monte Cassino, going on from there to the University of Naples. In 1243, he joined the Dominican monastic order at Cologin. His most influential teacher was another Dominican, Albertus Magnis, a German who wrote extensively on theological matters and questions of national science, especially biology. Thomas was also a highly successful lecturer, and travelled widely across Europe, particularly on the business of his order and the church.
Saint Francis of Assisi was an Italian monk who founded the monastic order of the Franciscans. He was from a wealthy family and spent most of his youth carousing the streets of Assisi with other young nobles. After fighting in the war between Assisi and Perugia, he contracted an illness and had his first mystical experience. After he was healed, Francis had another mystical experience while praying in a neglected church: “After a period of prayer and meditation, Francis heard the voice of Jesus coming from a nearby crucifix: ‘Francis go, repair my house, which, as you see, is falling completely to ruin’.” It was this call that inspired Francis to leave Assisi, determined to live more simply with his fellow monks.
Thomas Aquinas was merely one of the first men to defy the feudal order, allowing the common people more than what they were force fed under The Church’s feudal system. The system might have been unorthodox to common law, but was effective in maintaining order. Thomas Aquinas worked around this system to keep the law, but still defy it. Saint Francis of Assisi was a uniquely spiritual man who gave up a life of wealth and position to lead a life of poverty in accordance and service to God. Embracing a life according to the Gospels, Francis went on to establish a Monastic Order, known as the Franciscans. In the midst of the political climate within the religious community of Italy, Francis emerged a champion for the poor and sick, with humility and no regard for himself. Francis exhibited his love for God through his love and admiration for all of God's creation including nature. The principles of Saint Francis are as relevant today as they were in thirteenth century Italy; service and love to all of God’s creation.
In question 94 of his On Law, Morality, and Politics, Thomas Aquinas initiates his interpretation of natural law. He defines law as, “an ordinance of reason for the common good by one competent to make it, and promulgated” (10). Here, he suggests law is derived from an act of reason which commands or prohibits. Thus, it compels behavior. It must be rational and ordered to the common good of a community. Early Christians justified their dependence on faith in different ways. Some embraced fideism and favored faith even without or over reason. Others engaged and melded their new traditions with older ones. Thomas Aquinas describes and responds to several challenges of Christianity. Aquinas asserts that the study of God as revealed in Christianity, which he calls Sacred Doctrine, is a science which begins with divine revelations as axioms and uses human reason to build a meaningful body of information concerning who God is and how humans should behave.
As a young child growing up in Jamaica, I often hear people refer to what they do as vocation. It was always jobs that require no formal education such as plumbing or farming and these work were greatly enjoyed by these people. Carpentry for instance was a field that a person chose to do because of the love for it. Nevertheless, these people earned their living through these vocations. My father was a carpenter and yes he did support us by doing what he loved and that was building houses. Was my father fortunate to have found a skill that he liked and got paid for it? He always referred to what he did as a calling and was especially proud because his father was also a carpenter. I do think of teaching in the same manner. In my father’s day I would say that teaching was a vocation but as time changed the words vocation and profession have become compatible. Even though they have become compatible there are certain professions that one should be called to and teaching is one of them.
