Peter Abelard was a renowned dialectician from 1079 to 1142. He subjected theological doctrines to logical analysis. In other words, he used rational argument to discover truth. Saint Thomas Aquinas, was a believer in the power of reason, giving St. Augustine's theory an alternate approach. He taught in Paris and Italy during the years 1225 to 1274. Both of these new age thinkers changed the way Catholic followers viewed the "natural world."
Peter Abelard was one of the new thinkers that applied scholasticism to his theological aspects. According to the excerpt "Scholastic thinkers assumed that some teachings of Christianity, which thy accepted as true by faith, could also be demonstrated to be true by reason" (238). Peter Abelard's famous literary work was Sic et Non (Yes or No). He collected a list of about 150 philosophical and theological questions. He then produced quotations from the Fathers [Church] on one side, and on the other side their contradictory statements. From this work he used rational argument to discover truth. He believed that through reason, man could gain a greater knowledge of God. His greatest achievement was dialect, he created a new method of logical analysis. "Although he never intended to challenge the Christian Faith, Abelard raised, with critical scrutiny, fears that the dialectical approach would undermine faith and foster heresy"(238). His goal was to simplify theological works to logical analysis. A Cistercian monk, later known as St. Bernard of Clairvaux, opposed Abelard's logical views. Because of St. Bernard, Abelard was forced to quit his teachings, shortly after he died in 1142. Ideally, Abelard wanted prospective thinkers to search for the underlying truth about Catholicism....

The difference between the two works is that through Aquinas' point of view he cannot really be seen as wrong because there is no textual evidence against him because his work is based in his beliefs. However, Abelards' works can be questioned because people, at the time, had been asking his theological questions for years.
Both Abelard and Aquinas were the two leading followers of scholastics of their time. Summa Theologica and Sic et Non, to this day, are controversial ways man has looked for reason in finding the truth about God and the divine order of life. The views on the "natural world" were challenged without challenging the Christian faith, while being followers of the Christian faith.
Examining the two works against each other as if it were a debate makes it a bit clearer to compare. Aquinas, reveals his argument under the groundwork that there are essentially two methods of understanding the truth. One being that it can be surmised through reason an logic, and the other being via inner faith. On the surface at this point it could be argued that this ontological determination a bit less convoluted than Anselm, yet I tend to think it could be a bit more confusing. This is what leads him to the claim that the existence of God can be proven by reason alone or “a priori”. The twelfth century was divided into two phases: Early Middle Ages or Dark Ages and the High Middle Ages. It's during the High Middle Ages when things started to take a turn both mentally and physically. Churches developed more stamina and papal bureaucracy was created. The government was revived. Urbanization increased and most of all a sudden increase was brought in cultural revitalization and courtly love was an important aspect of this awakening. Courtly love is defined as humility, courtesy, adultery and religion of love. This is what I believe Abelards's and Heloise's relationship was based on in Abelard's Historia Calamitatum and his letters to Heloise.
In the years of 1670 – 1800 there was an intellectual movement that dominated Europe on ideas that were based around reason, the movement is the called the enlightenment. This was a period of: relative political stability, economic recovery, prosperity for emerging “middle class”, new markets, and trends in consumption. Additionally, society was more accepting or more tolerable to different religions, while also applying science to world problems rather than relying on religion to fix the problem. To begin, the Catholic Intellectual Tradition is known as a 2000 year conversation between the church and the world. When the age of the Enlightenment captivated Europe and other parts of the world, intellectuals and philosophers focused their attention to only reason and away from faith. In fact, many Enlightenment philosophers argued faith and reason could never be compatible. On the other, from the perspective of a Catholic Intellectual, many would oppose this way of thinking and argues a Catholic can most certainly promote both faith and reason.

Although there are almost 200 years separating Augustine from Justin Martyr and Tertullian, it appears that the church became more inclusive of philosophy during that space of time. Certainly, there were areas of agreement between the three as well as their disagreements.
Thomas Aquinas was a teacher of the Dominican Order and he taught that most matters of The Divine can be proved by natural human reason, while “Others were strictly ‘of faith’ in that they could be grasped only through divine revelation.” This was a new view on the faith and reason argument contradictory to both Abelard with his belief that faith should be based on human reason, and the Bernard of Clairvaux who argued that one should only need faith.
In fact, Augustine often addresses the supposed incompatibility between philosophical writings in classical culture by clarifying that he had found a means to convert to Christianity through the logical methods of western philosophy. This view on philosophy by Augustine proves controversial by other scholars of the time. However, it is also indicative of how, even in Roman Empire, the basis on which Christianity found its mass following, converts could still maintain a degree of cultural autonomy despite changing religious views. Augustine’s worldview is also established in other Christian authors of the time who endorsed the logical methods of philosophy, such as Jerome and Ambrose, of which, Ambrose directly influenced Augustine as an admirer of stoicism. The use of classical philosophy is even further emphasized in the Roman Empire, on the scale of the earlier analysis of Germanic culture, by Greek culture of the eastern empire into the medieval period, which sought to preserve texts and educate its citizens based on both Orthodox Christian beliefs and classical Greek ideas.

Aquinas and Augustine's showed their philosophies ,that were derived ancient philosophers, when they spoke of faith and reason, both of them tried to get there point out in there own way. Aquinas and Augustine both had one goal and and that was too prove that Christianity was somehow intertwined with philosophy and Both of them did just that, many people may or may not agree with these philosophies but it just depends on the type of person you are. Many people like to live off fact and know for certain, but like Aquinas and Augustine we all have our own philosophies, we choose what to believe and what not to believe. As a young child growing up in Jamaica, I often hear people refer to what they do as vocation. It was always jobs that require no formal education such as plumbing or farming and these work were greatly enjoyed by these people. Carpentry for instance was a field that a person chose to do because of the love for it. Nevertheless, these people earned their living through these vocations. My father was a carpenter and yes he did support us by doing what he loved and that was building houses. Was my father fortunate to have found a skill that he liked and got paid for it? He always referred to what he did as a calling and was especially proud because his father was also a carpenter. I do think of teaching in the same manner. In my father’s day I would say that teaching was a vocation but as time changed the words vocation and profession have become compatible. Even though they have become compatible there are certain professions that one should be called to and teaching is one of them.
