A realistic fiction “ Sprinkles and Secrets “ by Lisa Schoeder with lots of twists and turns. A book that takes place in Chicago in the current time period which makes it easier to relate to the characters . Sprinkles and Secrets is about a girl name Sophie ,who has always wanted to be an actress. One summer to her luck, she got hired by an agency who loved her work and proposed her an advertisement. changed to disappointment, the commercial was for Beatrice brownies, her best friend’s (Isabel) family’s business rivals’. She couldn’t decide between a lifetime of opportunity or friendship . Even though Sophie does end up picking fortune over friendship, she learns a very important and valuable lesson, that coming straight and clear to people is a key to a good relationship.
One scene that I find the best compared to the other scene is the scene where Sophie is looking for a bathrobe . Sophie is looking for a bathrobe for her dad in Macy’s men’s department and as soon as she finds one goes over to the register the teenage cashier says to her that you know this is from the men’s department .Sophie thought that this guy thing that she is a total idiot reply to him sarcasm that oh really , She does end telling that bathrobe is a Christmas present for her dad . As the scene goes on the event in life of characters affect the mood of the setting in a postive way. In the mall on a black Friday a teenage guy behind the register ask questions Sophie, “” This isn’t for you, is it ? he continues “” This is the men’s department ,you know .”” Sophie looks around and reply to him in sarcasm that,”” Wow,I wouldn’t have known, with all of the men’s pajamas, boxer shorts, and black socks.Huh.”” This scene could have been boring but the author made it funny, which created book seem more realistic compared to the other parts in the story . The scene is very descriptive which makes a lot easier for the readers’ to visualize. It also has a lot of sensory details , like when they are talking it feels like you are actually there listening to their conversation, so the scene as well as the setting stands out. The descriptive and the sensory details help reader to paint a picture in their mind and making that part of the story stand out compared to the rest of the
story.
The story takes place in a city in the year of 2053 A.D. Cities are imagined to be busy and energetic at night but in this city it is portrayed as deserted and noiseless as the author wrote ¨To enter that silence that was the city at eight o'clock of a misty evening in November...¨ Author Ray Bradbury goes on to explain the setting in several different parts of the story like that the ¨cement was vanishing under flowers of grass¨ or the ¨...cottages and homes with their dark windows...¨ to give an image to each reader. The setting can create a mood or an atmosphere- a subtle emotional overtone that can strongly affect our feelings. An example would be “On a dark, cold night in November 2053, the pedestrian - Leonard Mead- walks alone through the city. The streets and freeways are deserted. Dark tomblike homes line the streets.” Bradbury uses mood and details to explain how dehumanization and technology ruined the society that the character Mr. Mead was
It reminds us of a time not so different from where we live now, a world filled with lies, hatred, and moral ambiguity. It’s a story that largely reminds us as humans who we are, prone to mistakes and preconceptions that can lead to disastrous results, but also capable of growth and redemption. This story really allows you to understand different philosophies, perceptions, and differing opinions of morality and
Appealing to the reader’s emotions through stories is a commonly used technique, and Scelfo uses it beautifully. She starts the article out by introducing the reader to a young girl named Kathryn Dewitt. Whether they mean to or not, the reader develops some kind of emotional connection to this young girl. They feel as if they are a part of the story, for when something goes well, the reader feels good and vice versa.
The Author begins the story by introducing the scene since it will have great significance in understanding the many symbolisms he will be using later. Some experts say that “Although there is a situation, there is no plot” (Henningfield, 2002).... ... middle of paper ... ...
This is effective because of her uses of descriptive words like “stark”, and “big, round and gleaming like cartoon jungle boys”. (Smith) These words add images in the reader’s head and when you read the “big, round and gleaming like cartoon jungle boys” (Smith) you get the image of two cartoon characters fighting in puff that cartoon puff of smoke where different parts of body parts pop out of the smoke during the fight and then instantly go back in to the smoke. These words show that the main character thinks this all some cartoon and the whole quote it self shows the reader that there are some sick people in this world, now and in the past that will do horrific things because a person’s skin color is different. If she left those words out and just said that I walked into a dark alley, because its hard to see me, and I beat black man with a pipe, the meaning would not be the same. There is a demonic effect that is parent when you read the quote and her use of imagery makes the main character seem more evil. Also they way she uses dialog in her imagery impact the sense of listening of reader. The part of the quote, “Hey, nigger, Abe Lincoln’s been dead a long time.” (Smith), really adds a more hatred in the interaction. If this line was apparent, the whole quote would not be so strong because the dialog gives the reader
The author and director have used characteristics to connect with the audience by using relatable situations like school problems like bullying; teacher’s having favourites and friendship problems. As well as the main characters Jasper

Mary and Max tells the heart warming tale of a lonely 8 year old girl from Australia and a 44 year old man plagued by Aspergers and anxiety who are able to develop a friendship through writing letters. Mary Daisy Dinkle loves three things: her pet rooster, sweetened condensed milk, and the Noblets, a children’s TV show. With parents absent from her life and the kids at school bullying her for her birthmark, Mary is only able to find solace in someone thousands of miles away. Max Jerry Horowitz also loves Noblets, chooses the same lottery tickets every time and suffers from anxious overeating and not being able to understand others due to his Aspergers. While Mary’s demand for advice is often a heavy burden, Max is still grateful for his friendship with Mary.
throughout the novel allows the audience to gain a better understanding and personal compassion for both the character and the author. The novel is written in a short, choppy sentence structure using simple word choice, or diction, in a stream of consciousness to enable the reader to perceive the novel in the rationale of an eleven-year-old girl. One short, simple sentence is followed by another, relating each in an easy flow of thoughts. Gibbons allows this stream of thoughts to again emphasize the childish perception of life’s greatest tragedies. For example, Gibbons uses the simple diction and stream of consciousness as Ellen searches herself for the true person she is.
The setting and atmosphere bring true emotion to the reader that allows people to possibly get a glimpse of what that kind of life might be like. Survival is a consistent theme that is shown throughout the novel. The conflicts each character faces brings inspiration to the reader and reminds you that maybe what we are going through right now might not be so bad. Works Cited Donoghue, Emma. A great idea.

For one thing, the authors of “The Necklace” and “The Lottery” uses similar technique of the literary elements as part of their short stories to connect the characters with their audience in stories. The author of the “The Necklace,” Guy de Maupassant uses tone to demonstrate the character’s mood and uses the setting to imply the cause that the character experiences. As well, the author of “The Lottery,” Shirley uses tone and setting to demonstrate the character’s state of mind and uses the setting to indicate the cause that the character experience. The tone and setting of the stories are the most significant
