Sainsbury's official ‘1914’ Christmas Ad is a video advert promoting the brand of Sainsbury’s (the second largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom.) The advert takes the audience back to the time of war displaying the idea of opposite forces uniting on the occasion of Christmas and exchanging Sainsbury treats. This text promotes the idea of being together despite being in opposing army sides in battle by using the setting and symbols of Christmas and chocolates. In the advert, the British soldier secretly slips a gift into the pocket of a German soldier, who unwraps it to find a chocolate bar when he returns to his side of the battlefield showing the level of humanity of both sides despite being in fatal circumstances.

The first part of the advert shows the night-time where the German troops start their rendition of the famous Christmas Carol ‘Silent Night’ and eventually the British troops join in singing it in their own respective languages. The context is made very clear by singing a Christmas carol known to everyone across the world. Both sides sing the same song in their own language without making any sort of physical contact. This shows that unity can be a reality even in circumstances like war because both parties are willing to have a moment where they forget all differences and instead, focus on sharing an important celebration together. The audience now is able to relate even more with the text and its purpose because the context of silent night is appropriate and known to everyone. Using audio which is known connects the audience and hence promotes the theme of sharing to the audience in a more relatable manner and makes everyone realise that despite being in opposing army sides, one can learn to be together to celebrate
Before an author begins composing a body of work, there are three requirements necessary to establish beforehand. The composer must first “have a specific purpose and an audience”( Braziller, Kleinfeld, 7). A purpose allows there to be an overall reason to write. The purpose is necessary to persuade, inform, educate, or entertain the reader on a certain topic. The topic can be caused by "the time period, location, current event, or cultural significance (University, 1995-2018 )”. Identifying the audience is necessary since it instructs the composer how to communicate in a way the audience will appreciate and understand. Knowing how the audience will best understand the information gives the composer an advantage when trying to communicate the
How the setting was expressed is also a vital part for the development of the story. The opening paragraph gives a vivid description of the situation as would physically been seen.
The setting of a story lays the foundation for how a story is constructed. It gives a sense of direction to where the climax is headed. The setting also gives the visual feedback that the readers need to picture themselves into the story and comprehend it better. Determining the setting can be a major element towards drawing in the reader and how they relate to a story. A minor change in the plot can drastically alter to perception, interpretation, and direction of the message that is delivered. These descriptive elements can be found within these short stories: “the Cask of Amontillado”, “The Storm”, “The Things They Carried”, “Everyday Use”, and “The Story of an Hour”.
The commercial emphasizes an altruistic parent-child relationship throughout. It shows all of the incredible ways a father sees his daughter grow through her first years of life and the impact she has on him. Using this relationship coupled with the nostalgia-inducing music played throughout the commercial provides the audience with a feeling of saudade that shapes the advertisement.
"A texts setting and structure will normally be used by writers to develop and convey its themes."
One of the most fundamental elements of a literary work is the setting. It usually includes the place, time and social conditions of the described world and affects the story immensely. It allows the reader to relate to the events and characters within a story. It explains to the reader why the characters behave in a certain way or why they are susceptible to certain situations. As Welty states, ''Every story would be another story, and unrecognizable if it took up its characters and plot and happened somewhere else. . . . Fiction depends for its life on place''. It can be argued that this is no different when it comes to television shows or the works of cinematography. The appropriate selection of the setting has a substantial effect on how the fictional world is perceived and can result in a perfectly created sense of space for the story the audience wants to follow. It enables the audience to effectively visualize the characters' environment, stimulates their imagination and helps them to identify with the characters' everyday life struggles. The established setting does not only act as a decorative background for the unfolding story, but it also draws the

The setting and atmosphere bring true emotion to the reader that allows people to possibly get a glimpse of what that kind of life might be like. Survival is a consistent theme that is shown throughout the novel. The conflicts each character faces brings inspiration to the reader and reminds you that maybe what we are going through right now might not be so bad. Works Cited Donoghue, Emma. A great idea.
Setting - Identify the physical (when/where) settings of the book. How do these settings affect the moods or emotions of the characters?
The camera continued to show the expressions of the German soldiers listening and the camera zoomed in on the German lieutenant staring into space while listening to the English singing. The director did this to show that the German soldiers are thinking of their home and is getting nostalgic by the song “I’m Dreaming of Home”. The camera zooms back to the priest singing, with a sad expression. Then the camera goes to the French soldier crawling to the German trench. He was listening to the English singing and forgot about his mission, but he snaps back to reality and continues his secret mission. The camera switches back to the English trench where soldiers that aren’t singing is watching cheerfully from the side. The camera switches back to the English lieutenant singing with other soldiers, and when the song ended, the soldiers are all

Hershey’s and Quaker are two well established brands in the snack food world. The weight of their names carry a specific ethos; a persona that will influence the consumer to buy their product, as it is a name that the customer trusts. Two advertisements are analyzed, both found in a February 2007 edition of People magazine: Hershey’s Extra Dark Chocolate and Quaker True Delight print advertisements. The main connection between these two prints is rather apparent: they are both snack foods, and they contain dark chocolate. However, both prints, as they are introducing a new product line, paint a new image of their merchandise: this snack food is healthy, ergo this creation should be chosen over all other products. Hershey’s Extra Dark Chocolate utilizes a cause-and-effect strategy by outlining that consuming their dark chocolate will improve cardiovascular health, backed by the logic and ethos of a study performed by a well-known university. Quaker’s True Delights, however, emphasizes the fact that their product tastes fantastic and is low in calories, in addition to using their ethos of their brand. Ultimately, both products utilize their established persona to draw
The way the commercial is played out in a very basic way to lure viewers in to try the product. It simply started by creating a scene which portrayed lots of unusual actions such as talking chickens and french fries sitting on stairs. And lastly by showing the product and talking about the item, that last part creates lots of scenes in the viewer’s imagination. Scenes including: the viewer eating the item, buying the item and tasting the item. Overall the commercial is very persuasive with its techniques in displaying the cheap, tasty food.
The authors of Literature communicate things personally to us, one individual to another. This can help to validate our personal experience first time, it helps to have books written by people who have been there before.
