I went to see the Spring Choral Concert at St. Xavier High School on May 10th which also featured a performance from the percussion ensemble. Going into the concert I had no idea what to expect because I had never to been to a musical performance at St. X. One assumption I had going into it was that it was going to be well organized and feature many talented students. I could certainly tell that the performers had put a lot of effort and time into making the performance a success. In general I enjoyed the variety of pieces that were incorporated in the performance which allowed me to experience the wide range of songs from Star Wars to gospel. Both the choral ensemble and percussion ensemble performed multiple entertaining pieces which I found very enjoyable. …show more content…
The percussion elements also added to African style of the song. Another piece that I found particularly engaging was the percussion piece titled All About Dat Trash by Ed Argenziano. The use of different trash bins in a performance was something I was not expecting but enjoyed immensely. The way the percussionists reached over to play each others trash bins and hit each others sticks together as part of the song was unique and added to the uniqueness of the piece. Considering my little experience with percussion, these students seemed well prepared and perfected what seemed to be a hard piece to master. Finally, the Stars Wars piece played by the percussion was something I never would have expected to hear at a high school music concert, but it really added a entertaining twist to the
For my first concert report, I have decided to attend the Applied Music Student Recital. The musical performance was at Palomar College on February 27, 2015 from 1:00P.M.--2:00P.M. at the performance lab room D-10. The type of music that was presented at the concert was a brass ensemble, chamber music, classical, contemporary, jazz, opera, percussion, and many vocal arrangements. There was a total of eight musical Palomar College student performers who are majoring in music theory. I am only going to focus on a few of the musical pieces that I enjoyed most. The majority of the performers were dressed in formal attire. As the men were dressed in a dress shirt, a tie or bow tie of their choice, black slacks, and dress shoes. As for the women, they wore dresses, skirts and dress shoes. Also there was a pianist, accompanist who is a Palomar College music teacher named Ruth Weber. The performance was in a music concert hall with roughly fifty audience members.
On February 23, I attended the 17th Annual Sphinx Competition held at the Detroit Orchestra Hall. The concert was phenomenal, and surprisingly enough to me I actually relished the performance. The reason the concert satisfied me was due to the fact of the meaning that was upheld throughout the concert. The Sphinx Orchestra is an amazing foundation in which supports Black and Latino string classical musicians and gives them a chance to better their life through the prodigious gift of scholarships. At this specific concert three finalist strived to see who truly has the utmost talent amongst the three. The three musicians included nineteen year old bassist, Xavier Foley; twenty-one year old cellist, Nicholas Mariscal; and twenty year old violinist, Clayton Penrose-Whitmore. Each musician did an extraordinary and gave the impression that they played their pieces flawlessly. Although all the young musicians achieved mere perfection; there had to be a winner and that was Xavier Foley. He received fifty thousand dollars in scholarships and by all means deserved it. The conductor of the concert was Maestro Brandon Keith Brown, who also did astonishing. In addition to all of those great musicians I also had the honor of hearing Simon Shaheen playing the oud. All together the performance was just incredible in my eyes.
On February 27, 2014 the Humberside Collegiate Choir performed 3 songs at the Ontario Vocal Festival (OVF) in the Mayfield Secondary School auditorium. This choir wore maroon sashes with their school logo around their waists so that they could be identified as a choir. This choir sang “Fair Phyllis”, “I Value My Country”, and “One Goal”.
One performance that stood out to me during the concert was a song called Sinfonia #3 by J. C. Bach (Wind Ensemble Concert program). The reason I enjoyed this song was because it was performed by nine saxophone players. I would say
...xcited to have this experience. Part of the drama of the concert at first is felt when the musicians come in and sit down and begin tuning up their instruments. I would not be able to comment on the performance of the orchestra. During the performance, I seen the audience were moving with the music, but I felt like that everyone seems knows more music than what I learned throughout this semester. After I went home and did some of the research on these music I finally understand why these people like to attend the orchestra concerto, it was because that every piece of music has a history behind it. The Los Angeles audience seemed to me to be people who know music and who will listen to something new in a respectful way. All the same, when the more familiar sounds of the last piece were heard, I could feel a little sense of relaxation and fun coming into the room.
The concert was on March 13, 2014 at 12:30 pm the performers were Lisa Fujita, Brendan O’Donnell, Daniel Mitnitsky, Yannick Rafalimanana they performed five different Piano Quartet pieces. The first was a Piano Quartet No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 15 it was Allegro Molto Moderato, the next was III. Adagio and both of these pieces were written by Gabriel Faure. The next was a Piano Quartet in E-Flat Major, Op.47, called Sostenuto assai- Allegro ma non troppo this was written by Robert Schumann. Lastly there is the Piano Quartet in G-minor, K.493, I. Allegro, III. Allegretto and these two pieces were by W. A. Mozart. This was not the exact order and they did change a few thing like the way things would be played and they change the Quartet from E-Flat major to G-Minor because they said that it was difficult to play. By playing different types of music they offered us diverse experience. I really enjoyed the entire performance. Each of the Performers played a different instrument. Lisa Fujita played the violin, Brendan played the viola, Daniel played the cello and Yannick played the piano. Each of them played a very important role. Each of the performers looked calm and as if they knew what they were doing, they were dressed very formally but the audience was not dressed as formally due to the fact that it was during the school day and the event wasn’t a black tie event.
On November 16th, 2013, I attended a concert choir, fall choral concert. This event took place on the Wheaton College Campus, in the Edman Chapel at 7:30 pm. The chapel was well-lit, with long pews for the audience to be seated. The concert began with the audience looking up into a balcony, where the ensemble stood in neat rows. They watched the conductor, who stood on a stage in front of the audience, waiting for their cue.
The first band performance of the night was jazz band. The first song was “Alright, Okay, You Win” and I think it sounded great. I feel like I could’ve played out just a little more in the beginning because you can hear my notes but not too well. Jeremy’s solo sounded good and I think that my solo sounded good too. The next song was “Fly Me to the Moon.” I
On Wednesday, May 23rd, I attended the College Choir concert in the Reamer Campus Center. The choir performed a variety of songs, ranging from pieces in Latin to traditional American folksongs. Two of the pieces featured solos, and one even featured percussion instruments. Mrs. Elinore Farnum provided piano accompaniment for each of the songs, and performed beautifully. I was extremely impressed by the talented choir members and their ability to sing such a varied range of songs.
In conclusion, the concert was really interesting and I enjoyed myself. In my opinion the two pieces that I really like in this concert, are Sounden Horn and Polonaise from Engine Onegin, the shift between the melodic lines and the element of beauty is what made me like it. In the future I would recommend it to my friends and I will not mind to go with them at all. This kind of music is the best to me by far.
Florida State University presented The University Chamber Choir directed by Dr. Kevin Fenton, in Ruby Diamond Concert Hall on 5 November 2015. The concert included “The Mask,” which is a cycle of five poems that encompass the mood felt during the Harlem Renaissance as well as other times in Afro-American literature. These five poems are titled We Wear the Mask, Heritage, Shadow, Worn Faces, Interlude for Natalie, and Portrait by William Bolcom. The other piece performed were Even when He is silent by Kim Andre Arnesen, and another collection of poems titled “Harlem Night Songs” arranged by Timothy Hoekman.
For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at the Kimball Recital Hall. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because I usually work at night. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by students. I cannot imagine creating something as complex as a musical composition, much less actually performing it, so this aspect of the concert was particularly awe-inspiring. There was a large attendance, and I think that much of the audience consisted of friends of the composers and/or performers. I went with three friends, who I convinced by telling it would be interesting to see student composers.
On December 4th, I decided to indulge myself with some Chamber music in between my classes. I must admit I never saw myself as the type to go to a concert where there is not a large band and screaming fans. And, may I add, it was obligatory to go to this concert for my music class. But, when I arrived to the “Afternoon Chamber Music” event, I was pleasantly surprised. The music was different from the R&B, Hip-Hop and Rap music
For the first time I went to Butler School of Music at The University of Texas to the “Holiday Choral Concert” on Saturday, December 9th. Featuring The University of Texas Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Singers, Concert Chorale, and Chorus. The combination that the The University of Texas were featuring made it very different from the second concert I attend to which I enjoyed very much because not only did I get to hear different types of instruments, but I was also able to listen to talented singers. The concert opened with a song called “Randol Bass” conducted by James Morrow and Suzanne Pence. I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end it was an amazing experience
Music of Our Time Concert The UF College school of Music and arts hosts annual “Sound of the Season” concerts in spectacular venues. I was able to attend the annual concert that was held at Phillips Center last year. The stage is like one big open space and the lights beautify and make it brighter the instruments ranging from the piano to the set of cellos and electric guitars are positioned in every corner of the stage. It is well lit and all choir members adorn classy black tuxedo and dresses to blend with the surrounding.
