As per the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), 10-39% of all childhood dental injuries are interrelated with sports. The risk of sports related dental injuries can never be effusively eradicated. Via taking simple precautions like attaining the correct protective gear, however, the severity and rate of incidence of these injuries can be considerably decreased. Specially, mouth guards function to alleviate a blow to the face, decreasing the likelihood of broken teeth and injuries to the jaw, lips and tongue. Operating as an absorber and diffuser of impact energy, the mouth guard typically covers the upper teeth to help keep the jaw from displacing and decreasing the risk of concussion. Simply put, mouth guards cushion the impact that otherwise may cause serious injury to the teeth and mouth. A sportsperson is 60 times more likely to experience a dental injury when not wearing a mouth guard. Normally, mouth guards are used in contact sports like football, hockey, lacrosse and wrestling, but they are also certainly suggested and serve a protective purpose for non-contact sports like skateboarding, basketball, gymnastics, etc. From a young age, any sportsperson at risk for getting injury within their sport should contemplate using a mouth guard as part of their regular sports equipment. Ask the pediatric dentist about what category of mouth guard is best for your kid. A mouth guard that fits appropriately might be predominantly imperative for kids who wear braces or have other dental
It is an assumption by many that Canada has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. But do they really? There are numerous health services in Canada which should be part of the universal care nonetheless are not. These include but are not limited to: dental care, vision care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and prescription drug coverage. This report will solely focus on why basic dental care should be a part of the Canadian universal healthcare. Dental care is predominantly delivered in the private sector on a fee-for-service basis, with approximately 62.6% of Canadians paying for care through employment-based insurance and 31.9% through out-of-pocket expenditures and only a small amount of the Canadians, 5.5%, are qualified for public funding through government assistance programmes (Ramraj and Quinonez, 2012). It was seen that by 2009, dental coverage affordability became a problem not just for the low income families but also impacted middle-income earners as a result of their lack of, or decreased access to comprehensive dental insurance (Ramraj, 2013). It is stated by the World Health Organization that universal health care coverage should reassure access to necessary care and protect patients from financial hardship, and that the governments are obligated to
When we were younger, most of us wanted to be a princess or an astronaut. Now that we’re older, we’re starting to consider more serious options. A sports medicine physician isn’t your run of the mill career choice, but I’m not known for running with the crowd. I am confident, hard working and able to stay calm under pressure. Sports medicine physicians diagnose and treat patients of all ages related to physical health. To become a sports medicine physician, you need many years of post secondary education and they make a relatively good salary. With most careers, there are advantages and disadvantages. There can be travel opportunities and that comes with long work hours and high stress levels.
It's important for any high school student to have an idea or plan of what they want to pursue in the near future. Most students want to go into the medical field, become a professional athlete, a lawyer, etc. Many talk about becoming a dentist, but not a dental assistant. Simply because they feel like it's not that big of a title of being a dental assistant as compared to a dentist. Little do they know dental assistants play a big role as well in the office. A dental assistant does many tasks and duties that help benefit the dentist and also the patients.
Injuries to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) are one of the most frequent and devastating knee injuries that occur during sporting activities, accounting for one fifth of all sport related knee injuries ¹ ². Injury estimates have been reported in current literature to be between 1.5% - 1.7% per year within a healthy athletic population ³ ⁴. However, incidence rates for ACL injury prove difficult to access as not all individuals with ACL injuries seek medical attention ⁵. Current trends show a direct correlation between the rising incidence of ACL injury and increased sporting participation ⁶. In spite of increasing incidence rates, ACL injuries remain fairly uncommonly in relation to the amount of individuals participating in sporting activities ⁷ ⁸. Nevertheless, they still prove to be a frequent source of disability for those individuals affected ⁷ ⁸. Individuals affected with ACL injury may suffer from a number of adverse effects including dynamic knee instability, altered movement patterns, reduced functional performance and debilitating pain ⁷⁻¹⁰.

An ankle fracture is a break in one or more of the three bones that make up the ankle joint. The ankle joint is made up by the lower (distal) sections of your lower leg bones (tibia and fibula) along with a bone in your foot (talus). Depending on how bad the break is and if more than one ankle joint bone is broken, a cast or splint is used to protect and keep your injured bone from moving while it heals. Sometimes, surgery is required to help the fracture heal properly.
Dentistry as a profession over the years has evolved rapidly in light of new scientific evidence. Rapidly evolving science and technology have implemented changes within dentistry as evidenced by new standards and guidelines being produced by nationally recognised associations including National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) in Scotland, in provision of new scientific evidence. The latest standards and guidelines produced, endorse everyday clinical practice through evidence based dentistry (REF). All dental professionals as part of continued professional development are expected to keep to date on relevant guidelines and knowledge related to their practice (REF). This is supported by the General Dental Council who state all clinicians must maintain their professional knowledge and competence throughout their working career (REF).
One of the most common injuries in sports today is head injuries. Some of the major sports that head injuries occur in are hockey, football, and MMA due to the body contact between two players. Concussions cannot be detected through a CT scan or x-rays.
It is a mouth guard that has sensors in it that are similar to the ones in cell phones. “when someone is struck in the head, it can tell you how their head moved at 1,000 samples per second” (Camarillo, TedTalk). While our brains are the softest substances in our body, our teeth are the hardest. Therefore, it can give the mouth guard a more precise reading of how our brain moves. This mouth guard gives three different colored LED lights to detect the severity of the blow to your head. Low risk is green, moderate is blue, and severe is red. Red lights indicate that the player be immediately removed from the field. This can be connected and monitored through a mobile app for coaches and parents. This app will be helpful for medical professionals to see the player’s history of impacts. FitGuard is the future for detecting early signs of concussions in
Healthcare is a necessity to sustain society. Dentistry is an area of healthcare that I feel extremely passionate about because access to proper dental care is limited, especially in the underserved communities. As an African American, I want to become a dentist and healthcare provider in the hopes of helping patients and adding to the diversification of the field. With a growing minority population in the United States, it has become apparent that there is a shortage of black dentists. This is problematic because underrepresented minorities are in great need of access to culturally connected dentists who understand their clinical needs as much as their lives and their challenges. I believe that when the profession includes a range of ethnicities
Introduction: In Canada, general dental health is not part Canada’s national system of health insurance (Medicare) (1) except for some dental surgical procedures that are performed at hospitals. Since Oral health does not come under the Health Act about ninety-five percent of the oral health care services are offered on a fee-for-service basis. Oral health care is under provincial or territorial jurisdiction like other health care services and publically financed dental care programs provide the remaining five percent of oral health care services (2). Thus, majority of Canadians receive oral health via privately owned dental clinics. Privately owned dental care gives these services providers control over dental service charges, types of available treatment for the patients and number of follow-up appointment for treatments or routine care. Service users pay for the dental expenses from their own pockets or utilize insurance coverage (1).
Football is one of the most popular and most viewed sports in the nation; people of every race and ethnicity love to watch the game of football, but when playing this sport, participants must always account for injuries that occur such as ligament tears and brain, neck, and spinal injuries, all of which can produce short and long term effects on a player’s life.
In the past, diseased or damaged teeth could not be salvaged and in most cases, had to be pulled out. However, in the last three decades, endodontic dentistry has evolved to quite an extent and today, professionals trained in this specialty can help save teeth and repair any inherent damage. Common endodontic procedures include root canal therapy, fixing of broken teeth and repairing dental trauma.
Dental hygiene is a dynamic and challenging career that offers team work, personal growth, and extraordinary benefits, and it is the perfect career for me. As a health care professional, the dental hygienist is an important member of the dental team providing patient care. Good qualities for a dental hygienist are compassion and enjoying talking to people which are two qualities that fit my personality. I love the thought of knowing I made a positive impact in a person's health. Becoming a dental hygienist professionally requires you to obtain an associate degree in dental hygiene. They affect the average American by educating them about dental care. A dentist helps people with their dental health, which can greatly impact a person’s day-to-day life.
After watching the movie, I can say, that “FIVE EASY PIECES” is the movie that relay to part of my lifetime and the struggle I experienced facing the “stone wall of the society”, back in Bulgaria, during the 1980 -1990. I felt that the character Bobby (Robert Eroica Dupea – greatly performed by Jack Nicholson), try really hard to find solution for his situation in life, unfortunately he kind a “hit the stone wall” so do speak every time he makes an effort or attempt. The great work of the director Bob Rafelson is presenting the viewer with realistic portrait of middle class America during that period. From the very first frame of the movie portraying the hard work of middle class American at the oil-rig field, the way, the movie opens with
