Get your hot dogs here!” are typical phrases one might hear at a sporting event whether it be semi-professional or professional. It is likely that the person who organized the t-shirt toss or is in charge of the food vendors earned their degree in entertainment and sports management. First, there is the sports realm that comes with being a sports manager which allows the person to work with teams to promote them and get people to attend games (“Sports Management Careers”). Not only does the sports part deal with promoting and marketing for the team, but it can extend out to other career options if one decides they do not want to be a sports manager anymore but still be able to work in that field. Some of the most popular lines of work that people decide to go into after getting out of sports management are sports medicine, physical therapy, sports broadcasting, and public relations. On the other hand, there is another very important part of the sports management career and that is the business side of things (“Sports Management Careers”). Learning how to work with people to get them to attend events is important because this is where most of the money comes from. Furthermore, business negotiations between two teams often happen so each team can get the largest fan base possible and can ensure that their franchise is a success. There is also more that a person can learn about business from being a sports manager such as business administration, international business, finance, accounting, and human resources (“Careers with a Degree”). Sports teaches young kids how to be successful (and not successful) at life. There is so much that goes into sports that people who never have played will never understand. With each sport there is specific skill that one must master to be good, and with that takes hours and hours of hard work. You can talk about a certain individual’s skill and capabilities that make him great, but the real value of sports lies within a person. Sports creates determination and a competiveness that can be used in other areas of life, not just sports. There are millions of kids who attempt to become professional athletes but as the level of competition increases the number of athletes decreases, very few of them ever becoming a professional athlete but they are able to take what they have learned from sports into different professions in life. My senior project is about being a coach and how it can be difficult and not an easy task. I wanted to show others that being a coach is something that takes time and effort in order to accomplish it. Being a coach is not a fun job but it is a job that will help you in the future. Coaching is an experience that not a lot of people get to go through but those who do become not just better people but they become teachers to others in troubling times and in time of need. Coaching gives you and also shows you that being helpful and courteous to others actually helps you out as a person and it also helps out the players you’re coaching to be better people and to be kind and not take things in the wrong way and to show them a better way that will help them in their life.
However, this is not really a direct correlation to the coach’s effectiveness in a particular sport, being that there are many other factors in coaching a team other than game records. The coach’s job is to enhance the athlete physically, socially, and psychologically, winning is only considered a by-product of that job (Gillham, Burton, & Gillham, 2013). Gillham, Burton, and Gillham (2013) focused on developing a Coaching Success Questionnaire-2 to allow a means of evaluating other aspects of a coach’s interaction with their athletes as both a research and coach development tool. A sample group of athletes at the varsity and club level ranging from ages 18 to 25 was used to develop the questionnaire by asking their perceptions of their coaches.
As modification of higher education becomes more and more of a focal point for our country, sport psychologists have begun to focus their attention on athletes and their pursuit of exceptional athletic performance in elite sports and the extent to which this pursuit affects personal development. According to Lavallee (2005), previous research has found that collegiate athletes are more likely to have lower levels of career maturity and delayed career development than their non-athletic counterparts. In addition, researchers also found that collegiate athletes were less able to develop mature career and educational plans than other fellow college students. Therefore, this suggests that the education made available to collegiate athletes to develop career knowledge is lacking or incomplete; indicating that future research should be more focused on the personal development of athletes.

Sports has been a passion of mines since I was a kid. It was not until the end of tenth grade that I realized how much basketball had influence my. Playing basketball is a way for me to escape from the real world. Playing basketball made everything feel better and made me happier. It also taught me valuable life lessons, such as never given up on my dreams whether it seems impossible. I can not imagine my life without sports and what a better way but to work in the sports industry. My personal goals for getting a degree in Sports Management is to go professional and give back to the community. College basketball coach has been the career of my choice, there is a multitude of reasons for this. I have loved this sport since I was four years old and ever since then I have always pictured myself being a part of this sport when the moments are at it’s brightest when the NCAA tournament kicks off. For years I have followed this sport very closely watching as many games a possible with listening to Dick Vitale, Jay Bilas, Bill Raftery, and Gus Johnson loses their minds calling college basketball games. Professional athletes play in front of an audience and get paid for it. Fans like seeing these athletes perform their best so much that they are willing to pay to watch. Professional athletes are performers or entertainers. They must perform well in each game or risk losing. If they don 't play well, they won 't last long. The work of professional athletes is hardworking and at times demanding. This is both physical and mental stress. They must be in the best possible shape. Athletes usually work out all year, both during the season and in the off season in order to be able to start for their team. They must be able to perform their jobs at the highest level at all times. Professional athletes also face the constant threat of injuries that could potentially end their careers. For these and other reasons, this kind of job can be quite stressful. During the season, athletes often practice more than 50 hours a week. They may have other duties related to the team as well for instance, going to meetings or watching films about the opposition. Athletes have to move to the place where their team is located. If the manager decides to trade them, they have to most likely to move again. Being a professional athletes they often have curfews and other restrictions on the things they do. They are not allowed to just leave the job at the office like workers in other jobs can. That’s why the athletes receive what they get, because of what they do when they need to
People have been entertained by sport since before the gladiators in the Roman Coliseum. In the 20th century, the publics’ passion for sport consumes more and more of their free time. As sports figures became internationally recognized, athletes began to realize their need for professional representation. Thus, sports agents were born. The field of sports agents has grown since then into an enormous field. Agents now deal with every aspect of an athlete’s life. You have high paid athletes asking for multi-million dollar contacts, while at the same time you have doctors not even making close to that amount. There are corporations buying out sports teams, buying stadiums, and buying everything that has to do with sports. Someone may ask why they do this. Sports are one of the most profitable industries in the world. Everyone wants to get their hand on a piece of the action. Those individuals and industries that spend hundreds of millions of dollars on these sports teams are hoping to make a profit, but it may be an indirect profit. It could be a profit for the sports club, or it could be a promotion for another organization (i.e. Rupert Murdoch, FOX). The economics involved with sports has drastically changed over the last ten years. In the United States, we spend about 13% of all money on sports and entertainment. Sports has obviously done its job; entertained and drained money out of our pockets.
