Impact: As mentioned before, going into this internship I thought it was only for completing this part of the Sports Leadership program. However, interacting with the kids weekly through the play of the tournaments, watching them complete, getting to see them in different situations, helped build a close bond in different ways with each of them. I grew to learn that for some of these kids, playing in these games was the only thing they had to look forward to within the week, and as they grew up, some in unfortunate circumstances, playing in the tournaments, brought happiness to them for a couple of hours. What I mean by that is all the readings, discussions, and assignments throughout the sports leadership program have all been intuitive. With this internship I received a hands-on experience of everything I studied in the program. I kept reflecting to the risk management class I had where regulations and safety of the facility was kept, and there was emergency protocol for anything that could possibly go wrong. Ideally, I wanted to work with the players in development, not necessarily a trainer per say, but working within some levels of basketball operations or equipment management. After several months of working at the boys and girls club, that goal is still in the vision, however, the vision has become broader. There is a lot of care needed for professional basketball players, but someone like myself coming into a situation they’re already in may not have a great impact on them and their lives. Comparing to a child’s life, coming into the boys and girls club, I was unaware of how much relationships I would make with the kids.
