Social character is a large skill that is taught through sports and student athletes have great social skills because in games and practices they are forced communicate with each other to build greater teamwork. "Character is a person's ability to deal with in a productive manner, situations that arise during competition that involve a certain emotional intensity. A certain grace and strength are involved in dealing with what I refer to as artificial life/death situations: making the play to win the game, wanting to take the last shot" (Rudd, 1999). What this statement is saying that more than half of what goes on during the course of a sporting event is mental and the rest is physical. In a game athletes will have to control their feelings …show more content…
Many things come with the title social character, such as, teamwork, loyalty, and self-sacrifice, just to name a few. Of all sports the main reason there is sports in schools is to build teamwork. Most student athletes have great teamwork with other people, through sports kids will have to have great teamwork with other kids that they might not like but you need to get the job done no matter what the sport. Loyalty is just as important than the others, athletes must be loyal to their team and to there coaches. Athletes need to be loyal to be a great teammate, other people are counting on you to do your job everyday, and once again this carries into life, there will always be people that count on you to do your job and do it right. Being loyal to your coach is a big deal because in a sport a coach is your boss, when you're not loyal to your coach there will be consequences and it would be the same with a boss at a job. A lot of athletes want to be the main show and that's not what sport are about, it's about a team working together to achieve their goals. This is why self-sacrifice is a great quality that athletes have, many athletes are unselfish and will put there body on the line for their teammates which are the best athletes to compete
Stephen D. Keener, writer for the New York Times, says in his article Sports Teach Kids Valuable Lessons, “The lessons young players gain between the foul lines have guided some to become astronauts, emergency first responders, bestselling authors, military heroes, professional athletes and even president of the United States” (Keener). Keener talks about how playing on a sports team as a child can teach the kid very important characteristics, like: teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. Any kid who wants to get a job when they’re older is going to have to know how to work well with people, which is where learning the skill of teamwork is so huge. Considering Ripley’s point about sports lowering academics, Keener argues, “These lessons directly translate into the classroom and beyond” (Keener). These are some very important lessons I think that kids can benefit from
On the contrary interscholastic sports can be character to the sporting events in town. Students act dumb and they end up doing something to earn respect back to play. However building character is something all the sports for school the students shouldn’t act immature and actually be mature so the school can build its character on the sport, so people come and watch them play. On the other hand the students need to keep the grades up to participate to play in the school
Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. This study provides concrete evidence that high school sports can help to gain mental and social skills that will be used later in life
The journal article, “What does sport mean to you? Fun and other preferences for adolescents’ sport participation” claims that fun, social aspects, masculinity, and identity are the main reasons youth participate in sports (Skille and Østera˚ s, 360). Oftentimes, athletes forget they are on the same team, and they start to form cliques or groups based around who has the best bench press or 40 meter dash time. As a result, teammates start to compete with each other instead of working towards the same goal. For instance, one coaching journal article claims that “moral reasoning” in youth is determined through “collective norms” or group behaviors that the coach has a hand in influencing (Shields, LaVoi, Bredemeier, Power, 748-749). A proper coaching environment should therefore revolve around a fun, supportive, and collective environment where success is encouraged through the full support of the team. This support can further be developed through proper positive mindfulness and code of conduct guidelines set forth by the coach; for instance, hazing should be discouraged and proper communication and helpfulness among teammates should be
College is a time for young people to develop and grow not only in their education, but social aspects as well. One of the biggest social scenes found around college campuses are athletic events, but where would these college sports be without their dedicated athletes? Student athletes get a lot of praise for their achievements on the field, but tend to disregard the work they accomplish in the classroom. Living in a college environment as a student athlete has a great deal of advantages as well as disadvantages that affect education and anti-intellectualism.
Youth sports can be a learning experience or it can be a health risk to the athletes. Youth sports can teach young children the value of hard work and discipline or it can be emotionally and physically damaging. Three main points are how sports keep you healthy, how they build character, and the values that they will learn from sports and how they will use in the future. These three ideas prove that youth sports can be healthy, they build character, and can teach them the value of hard work and discipline for your kid.
There many ideas and concepts on personality development that cannot be taught inside the four corners of a classroom, rather , a high school student must interact with fellow high school students, in order to have a hands-on experience and better understanding of the real life applications of those personality development theories that they learn in classrooms . This has been the main reason why most of the high schools nowadays encourage the participation of their students to various extracurricular activities. Among many extracurricular activities available to high school students, athletics would one of the most popular extracurricular activities in high school. Athletics has been identified to have profound effects on the development of self-esteem, sense of maturity, and leadership skills of many high school students which are very useful on its personal development as an individual. Based on the Leadership Ability Evaluation conducted in a sample of 60 suburban high school students, the result revealed that athletes demonstrated significantly greater leadership ability skills that with the non athletic. Furthermore, the said evaluation also revealed that female athletes have greater leadership skills than with the male
It is evident that throughout history, economic and social values constructed the athletes, which collectively determined the characteristics, ideals, etc., of the team, leading to also be a reflection of society today. Thus, it is fair to say that sports have an extremely significant influence. In current day, as mentioned prior, we are highly competitive by nature. It is something that has grown on us over time. Humanity is generally obsessed with winning and competing. But it is much more than just about promoting physical activity and achieving personal physical goals; it is also about watching someone else's efforts fall short.
“Kids who had lower (athletic) confidence said they were more lonely at school” (Dunn 1). When teens have a higher self esteem, they tend to feel more confident in who they are and what they are doing. Teens who are confident in themselves tend to make friends easier, because they appear to their peers that they are confident in what they are doing and people who are confident appeal more to people then those who are not. “Children and adolescents often make friends with others on their sports teams, or in their activity programs, and these friendships help keep them involved in the activity, and make the activity more fun” (Brehm 258). Furthermore, friends that are made on a sports team result in a strong friendship because teens can have fun with their new friends during practice or games. Some will argue that sports can cause athletes to become more likely to do drugs than students who do not do sports. While this might be the case, sports do in fact keep teens out of trouble because sports provide more opportunities to make new friends. “At some schools, it is cool to be an athlete. And students who are lucky enough to become athletes receive reinforcement from their peers” (Brehm 258). Popularity and making friends in middle school and throughout high school is something most teens struggle with. However, if teens play on
The Suez Canal, opened in 1869, was known as the “jugular vein of the British Empire” as it provided the shortest ocean link between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean, eased commerce for trading nations, and helped European colonial powers to govern their colonies. The economic potential of the Middle East, with its vast oil reserves, as well as the Suez Canal’s geopolitical importance, prompted British imperialism to establish its position throughout the region, including a vast garrison of 80 000 along the length of the canal in an area known as the Canal Zone, but this presence generated intense hostility. The post-imperial actions of Western powers within the volatile Middle East still lie at the roots of many issues in the region
When I was a member of the youth swim and soccer teams, and because I only played each sport for a year, my social performance with peers suffered because I was unable to gain the self-confidence that comes with playing a sport that you know you have talent in. As a result, today I tend to keep to myself and very rarely do I ever venture out to meet someone new in my peer group, instead I wait till they approach me or until someone introduces them to me. However, sports can also have a negative effect on the social realm of a child as well. I have noticed, for instance, that some of the girls who have played a sport for a large majority of their lives seem to be more outgoing, rambunctious, and manly than compared to girls who have evolved themselves in normal activities life working out in the gym.
Participating in team sports is important not just for health reasons, but also for your healthy intellects and emotions. Playing sports that is in range of the player’s interest helps relieve stress and maintain their mental health. A team is mostly about unity within the team and with the coach, so no one can be selfish. Therefore playing in team sports develops good characteristics within oneself. Being part of a team sport should help create the opportunity to gain meaningful insight into one's leadership, social and cognitive development. Team sports helps build good character because they teach athletes discipline and how to have good sportsmanship. Chatterjee and Jatta declared that human beings learn and work together in various professional
Being a student athlete in high school takes commitment. It is hard work and dedication to both school and the sport you are participating in. If you plan on being an athlete at Imlay City high school you must focus on being a good student first or you won’t succeed. Coaches here know that being a student always comes first as they have told me so themself. As a student athlete, I have been influenced by sports. It has played a part with my career goals, and how I relate with my family.
Asking if sports build character is not as big of question than asking what type of character is being built. This depends on coaches, parents, and other sport leaders and how they teach it. Positive experience plays a part in the development of character, and not everyone has the best experience. Some might also say that their environment was not the greatest either. Teaching through sports can focus more on the sport itself, than things bigger than sports, such as right and wrong, and how to make the right decisions (Manning and Morgan).
The involvement in team sports builds good character and social development skills in children. According to LHSAA executive director, Kenny Henderson “Children who participate in sports have heightened self-esteem, social skills, ability to work well with others and more respect.” Young adults who have played team sports are less likely to take illegal drugs. Adults who played sports as children have better social and leadership skills. Sports provide children with experiences and interactions necessary to grow into an adult with good character and sufficient social skills. Team sports in grade school can offer children and teenager an outlet for stress and negative emotional build-up. Coaches, practices, games or meets and traveling all have a large impact on a person’s charter. Most children who have played a team sport at some time have character traits found in highly successful adults.
