The purpose of the study was to compare the effectiveness of two sport-specific training methodologies using a novel stickhandling and puck control (SPC) training device; physical practice (PP) and physical practice and observational learning (PP+OL), on skill acquisition and retention of SPC skills in competitive hockey players. Male (N=40), atom-aged (2005; 2006 birth years), hockey players were recruited to participate and assigned to one of three groups; PP (n=16), PP+OL (n=15) and control (n=9). All groups completed one 50-minute familiarization session and two assessment sessions [pre-training (Apre) and post-training (Apost)] consisting of off- and on-ice assessments. The PP group received eight, 50-minute on-ice SPC training sessions. …show more content…
A retention assessment (Aret) was completed by PP and PP+OL following a two-week break. The off-ice assessment consisted of height (cm), weight (kg) and a modified Aggis and Walsh (1986) coordination assessment (# of successful passes). The on-ice assessment consisted of a battery of two forward skating drills measuring execution time (s) and five SPC drills measuring interval time (s), execution time (s) and execution competency. Execution competency was assessed on a 12-point scale for each device within each SPC drill by an expert rater. Paired samples t-test revealed that 8-sessions of SPC training elicited significant improvements in execution time for both training groups. No significant interactions between groups were found in execution time or execution competency for any of the 5 SPC drills, combined overall total time (COTT) or total competency (COTC). A series of two-way mixed Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA) revealed significant differences within groups for; (i) execution time for three of the five SPC drills and COTT and (ii) execution competency for one of the five SPC

Developmental Coordination Disorder and Hockey What is DCD? Developmental coordination disorder describes a numerous issues that incapacitate a child from fully acquiring the ability to perform movements that require some degree of skill. Those who have this disorder experience many challenges in carrying out or participating in daily activities. For the case of Kieran, he depicts the signs of DCD that has majorly affected his fine-motor ability chronically and gross-motor ability only mildly. An affected person like Kieran will be affected not just physically by lacking coordination, but emotionally and mentally. They may be very temperamental or lack endurance when carrying out tasks. Experts postulate that DCD people will have a lot of dependence on sight in order to respond to prompts. They easily loose themselves unless prompted by sight. In this study by Poltavski & Biberdorf, (2015), they observed whether visual, perceptual and cognitive/motor variables collected with the Nike Sensory Training Station have a significant effect to real game statistics for collegiate male and female athletes. The study included thirty-eight student athletes from the University of North Dakota’s NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s hockey team. The athletes were assessed through 10 tests of the Nike SPARQ Sensory Performance System. Nike SPARQ Sensory Performance System is a computer-based vision assessment station that evaluated athletes on 10 sport-relevant visual and sensory performance skills, (Poltavski & Biberdorf, 2015). Athletes used an Apple iPod touch to complete each visual test. Visual tests included Visual Clarity, Contrast Sensitivity, Depth Perception at Far, Near-Far Quickness and Target Capture. All testing was completed during the summer after completing the 2011-2012 season and before beginning the 2012-2013 season. In this study, they included two seasons worth of data to achieve greater accuracy. Poltavski & Biberdorf found a 69% of variance in the goals made by the team’s forwards in 2011-2013, which was predicted by faster reaction times, better visual memory, increase visual discrimination and the ability to shift focus of attention. They also discovered a 33% of variance in game points
