Nickelodeon promotes a humorous animated series call Spongebob Squarepants. In this series, a silly sponge named Spongebob goes on countless adventures and faces consequential predicaments. In one episode, Spongebob encounters a situation where his identity went missing. Something as frivolous as a name tag can change the way your identity is perceived. During this episode, Spongebob was constantly stressed out about the way people looked at him, because his name tag shaped his identity. However, he completely changed when his identity was “stolen”. The major impact of identity alteration comes from the environment. Eddie Huang was stressed out because of the hostile environment he was exposed to. Conclusively he became more apprehensive and insecure. Discrimination and identity alterations are portrayed in the perspective of Asian immigrants and minorities. An identity is made up of distinct characteristics that are unique to every individual. The environment plays a crucial factor when shaping these characteristics, whether it's a personal or cultural. The thought of escaping is futile, even if you have high self-worth and an overly positive ethnic identity, there’s still the effects of the “Buffering” and “Exacerbating” Hypothesis which could potentially lead to an undesirable effect on self-belonging and identity. Throughout a variety of ethnic groups, ethnic identity is the catalyst, both to “buffer” and “exacerbate” the negative effects of discrimination. Reverting back to the first example of identity, the silly sponge, known as Spongebob was affected when his identity went missing. Everyone’s identity is affected in one way or another, however, the most prominent factors would be discrimination in relation with the exposure of an environment.
