The leadership of Prophet Muhammad and spiritual leadership: Although the field of spiritual leadership is still in its infancy, it is attracting a lot of attention in the last decade and many authors and scholars link spirituality to organizational leadership (Dent, Higgins and Wharf, 2005). Therefore, there is a need in studying spiritual leadership because of its impact on organizations and management as people from different religions work together in the current era of globalization. Consequently, studying religious figures and their impact on management is important. Moreover, there is a gap in the research of spiritual leadership which involves the lack of focus on the behavioral and characteristics of a spiritual leader and the external factors such as followers and situations that facilitate good spiritual leadership (Krishnakumar et al., 2014). All this raises the need to study the leadership of Prophet Muhammad and its impact on organizations and management. This model should connect different organizations in the Muslim world together and should give a deep insight about the main principles that motivate people and organizations. This model should also offer a better understanding of the situational and cultural factors that exist in Muslim societies (Ali, 2009). Moreover, developing such a model can help to understand the nature of leadership and to understand the factors that help shape leaders in the Muslim world. Additionally, the model will offer researchers an opportunity to understand Islamic culture and the complex environment at economic organization and the developmental and organizational issues in many Muslims countries (Ali, 2009). It will also help to limit the gap between leaders and followers in Muslims societies because organizations in Muslim societies suffer from deep and serious crises (Ali, 2009). In the era of globalization, an additional challenge exists of the different moral values based on diversity of culture. A number of studies have emphasized on the leader and not enough emphasize has been placed on the followers and their role. In some circumstances, the follower is merely seen as someone who has to follow the orders of his leader and in another case, a follower is someone who has the right and inspiration to help organizations think in a new manner. In this way, it is important that the views of the followers must be given importance and they must indulge in dialogue and coordination with their leader and the communication must be encouraged in a structured manner so that a strong relationship is developed. This means, that the leader must create an open environment where his followers can express their interests and if a leader lacks his orientation, he will misuse the power and make decisions that will fit their own personal interests rather than based on mutual understanding with his followers.

Leadership styles can be divided, primarily, into the two categories of democratic and authoritarian leadership styles. This study will examine the three democratic styles of transformational, servant, and charismatic leadership. As implied by its name, servant leadership can be defined as “providing leadership that focuses on the good of those who are being led and those whom the organization serves’’ (Hamilton & Nord, 2005, p. 875). Greenleaf (2002) suggests that as opposed to being the central focus of the group, servant leadership places the leader in alignment with the group, allowing for support and resources to be allocated to its members. Moreover, servant leaders act as organizational directors, fostering a sense of community between organizational members (Greenleaf, 1977). In contrast to the traditional top-down paradigm of leadership, the servant leader is placed at the bottom of the hierarchy (Rieke, Hammermeister, & Chase, 2008), thereby allowing for the needs of followers to be met. The major focus of this approach to leadership is to encourage the growth, autonomy, and learning of followers, which in turn will influence and enhance future organizational leadership and growth (Bass, 2000). Through behaviors such as empathizing and nurturing followers, the servant leader places the concerns of his or her followers at the forefront, allowing them to reach their own personal capabilities (Northouse, 2012). Moreover, an overarching theme of servant leadership is the ethical behavior the leaders exhibits toward followers (Walumbwa, Hartnell, & Oke, 2010). As stated “If people aren’t giving you helpful answers to your questions, maybe your asking the wrong questions” (Dennis, 2011, para. 1). Questions are essential in keeping a project on track, and are used to help identify any issues or constraints that could affect the outcome of the project. If a leader fails to ask questions they will not know if the project faces any challenges. If the project is facing a challenge, the number one question to ask is “Can we fix it” (Pink, 2010, para. 4). Leadership and management will be unable to help resolve issues if they don’t that they exist. The only way to know if their project is facing any challenges is simply by asking the right questions.
